They arent trying to be #1 at the moment, they are trying to beat WP8.

once they make the os more smooth and robust also adding more and more apps, refining the os I would say watch out apple and android! As of right now they will catch up and surpass Windows phones...

well... I returned my z10 and picked up a nexus 4.
Some impressions:
-os is smooth and definitely a lot better than I thought
- there are a lot of bugs that almost make it very frustrating to have a functional device at the very least
-70,000 app selection at launch was based off play book apps... It's quite a joke to be honest
- if they gain developer support and are able to kink the bugs out within a few months, and I think they have a really good starting base Posted via RS Mobile |

Don't know if it's been posted but you could find a number of Android apps to sideload here for the Z10 - Playbook Apps | Android APPS - BB10 Apps & Playbook Apps.
Sideloading is easy enough for me on the PlayBook but they ought to have made it way simpler for the general consumer to do it. That is, if it was built-into the phone that you could just download and install instantly, that would have greatly expanded the available apps. I'm guessing it has something to do with the legality of things and Google probably being opposed to it.

Sideloading technically isnt intended for the consumer, it was a way for devs, specifically android devs, to test their apps on the playbook/bb10 before porting them over. I dont think you will find any consumer sideloading information on blackberry's website. We are just fortunate that for now we can sideload fairly easily.
Plus anytime I can give the middle finger to google for pulling back support for other platforms by sideloading their apps is a good day for me.

BB will always be BB, they won't be "stealing" any iphone users, it's just not possible when people have been using iphones for so long. bb is trying "maybe" retain and get back previous BB users.
apps or no apps, we use a fraction of the apps we download, it all comes down to the ease of use.
wp8 is a joke, it's a totally diff model which my friend working at MS is trying to evangelize and it's tough. it might be super fast, but fast ain't going to win it all.

^ I've been an iPhone user since the 3G and BB stole me over with relative ease. As long as Instagram comes out ASAP, BB has a really good shot at having some more customers switch over. That is, until the iPhone 6 comes out.

One bug I seem to notice quite frequently is a blank contacts list. Really annoying when I'm trying to call someone.

Originally Posted by twstd_reality Can you expand on those bugs? When you first turn it on, or install an app, or even connect your email/facebook account, it connects right away, BUT it also syncs and cache stuff in the background. This makes the OS really sluggish while it is sorting everything in the background.
- When an app freezes you can close it and re open it...but if it's the HUB, you are screwed and are forced to do a battery pull
- Blackberry Link that allows you to sync your content to your device does not work very well. Windows users are required to install Net Framework 3.5+, which for me was crashing very often. It took me 3-4 tries of uninstalling/installing Blackberry Link AND Net Framework to get it working. Once it got working, the application froze and only 80/1xxx music was synced. Coming from an iphone, you would think that when you plug it in, it would sync the rest, but it doesn't...it just keeps saying "Sync Completed". I was forced to put the phone into USB Mode for any transfer
- For people who use their phone as a Phone + Text Message, then the blackberry would be great, but for most individuals it will be difficult who are switching over from another smartphone, whether its blackberry os7, iphone or android. The other OS has whatsapp and many other content for you to go by, but with BB10, you are very very very very limited, which follows up on my next point.
- 70,000 apps are pretty much all for the PlayBook. Yes it is compatible, but it feels sluggish and unpolished. Songza for ex. was lagging to the point where My Nexus One, an Android phone few years ago, was running it a lot smoother. Blackberry has announced that they have many app developers COMMITED to making apps for blackberry, but that doesn't show whether or not they will be an Android PORT or a native app. This makes a huge difference in terms of functionality because an Android port is based off android, where as a NATIVE app would take advantage of the tools(API) given by Blackberry to run the app to its full potential. Keyword...COMMITED...theres no ETA, NOTHING
Last point...As I said earlier, I think Blackberry is a great OS as a base when compared to iOS or Android, but let's face it...most consumers like myself is way too reliant to applications as shortcuts or a way of entertainment. It is gonna be quite a while before Blackberry make a dent in the current market. My guess is that they are gonna hurt their brand even more with the way things are looking
But hey, this is just my opinion...feel free to take it or leave it |

Dont forget the reason for the UK and Canada releases 6 weeks ahead of the US release is so we can be unofficial beta testers. There is a large software update expected at US launch to clean up most of the known bugs. So Id reserve judgment on those things until then.
Im noticing a few bugs here and there too. None have been overly serious and many a quick crackberry search will reveal a fix, work around, or tweet from Blackberry saying they know about it and it will be corrected in the update.

It's not so that we can be beta testers....it cause they have always launched in Canada first because of carrier contracts/deals. I don't think Blackbery is dumb/risky enough to release a product as a beta...especially if they are on their last toes

While your points are valid those arent really a fault of the OS itself. When you said bugs i thought you meant specific things like for me, when i have music playing on headphones my notifications are sometimes inaudible. Or sometimes the keyboard doesnt pop up when it should - in which ever menu/window it's in.
I haven' seen any of the 2 issues you saw so i cant comment. It's been quick and smooth for me right out of the box. No freezes, no battery pulls, no force closes. If i had juice defender on it my battery would probably last 3 days instead of 1.5 like it does now.
For me, apps are basically useless. i love using the browser instead - much quicker and better written. Android port or native makes no difference if they are written properly and function the way they should. The only issue here is integration. Ive only looked for and downloaded maybe 4 apps and uninstalled another 4. On my droid i had like 50. All to make up for the lack of os integration, battery life, security, and productivity. To each their own i guess.
