I had my wisdom tooth removed when I was 29. It was fully erupted and on the top and the removal was easy and recovery was very quick. It's recommend that the bottom wisdom teeth be removed at a young age because your jaw hardens as you get older and it's very difficult to remove and there's more complications as you get older so I would have them removed if your dentist has thrown up a red flag.
I would have the teeth removed in one appointment because recovery time will be longer if you go two separate times.

Get it done on a Friday and you'll be good for Monday.
I had a much more involved procedure done a couple of months ago and they only used a local. I went to work the next day (it totally sucked but was doable).
don't click unless you're ready to see a semi-gory procedure:

yes, a week after the removal approximately. didn't trust the meltable stitches since potential infection.
plus salt water clean a couples of times everyday for two weeks after removal

I had 3 wisdom teeth, the 4th one simply didn't exist, or rather, it had mutated and went to the top of my mouth. ALL of my wisdom teeth were impacted and sideways, they all had to be crushed and "vacuum'd" out, I had stitches for every wound, as well as a gaping hole for the next 3 months or so.
Be sure to keep these wound holes clean, otherwise you risk the chance of infections.
Thankfully, I had no chubby bunny.

I went to a specialist, dentists didn't even want to look at it considering how fucked up my situation was.
He's located in the office tower where London Drugs is, his name is Dr. Wittenburg.

I made the mistake of leaving my wisdoms in for 3 years from the dentists initial recommendation to remove them. I should've listened because the wisdoms on my lower jaw were completely sideways and were pushing against the neighboring teeth. It came to a point were I couldn't eat food because it was too painfull to close my mouth. The pain became unbearable so I immediately booked a time to remove them.
My family and "some" friends were the ones who told me not to remove my wisdoms but if I had taken them out 3 years earlier, I wouldn't have suffered at all.

No I didn't feel any pain till the 3rd year. The pain just came from no where and I was on soft foods for a few weeks ( including recovery time from surgery)

The longer you wait, the more they grow. Once they get too close to the nerve endings, some surgeons will just say because they don't want to accidently hit your nerve endings.. That is the biggest worry on their side IIRC.
I got mine pulled when I was about 16, got all 4 at once and got put to sleep.
I always recommend doing it all at once, and going to sleep. I have had friends that didn't go to sleep, and got 2 at a time. They ALL regret doing that, and wish they would've done it all at once. (Double healing time, double the discomfort)
Go back to your oral surgeon, and set up a date to get them out.

i had mine pulled after one rotted so badly it infected my throat and almost swelled shut. I went to the Dentist only to have him prescribe Antibiotics to reduce the swelling. I was in serious pain already and had to wait another week almost.
finally get to the surgeon to pull all 4 teeth out. was told not to eat but, fuck it, I was starving and knew i couldn't eat later, so i did.
went in, doctor stuck a needle in my arm and sorta knocked me out. All the while i could hear the cracking and crushing sounds of pliers in my mouth. no pain tho.
Afterwards the Doctor called my wife in and asked, "He had eggs this morning didn't he?"
yup.
lied down on a couch for 30 min or so till the drugs wore off. went to the lobby and ate a bag of chips.
I was in so much pain PRIOR to the teeth extraction, that i felt nothing while eating razor sharp shards of delicious fried potatoes.
oh, and the doctor gave me my old teeth in a Dixie cup to take home. there were black holes completely though it, like horrible stinky Swiss cheese.
I'm kinda stumped as to how the teeth rotted as they barely broke the surface of my gums.

My personal experience with wisdom tooth removal was very positive. X-rays showed that I had 4 wisdom teeth all growing sideways and were going to make my teeth crooked so I had to get them out ASAP (I was ~19 yrs old then). Only problem was that all 4 of them were still hiddin in my gums so it was a bit more complicated. Went to a specialist (Dr. Kenneth Chow) and I think he used the 2nd highest level of anesthesia (in chinese it's half body anesthesia if it helps....). Pricing was a lot more than the average dentist, but insurance from my dad's company covered most of it. I Think the total for the bill was ~3200? But we only had to pay ~500 of it.
Took out all 4 in one go, and had almost no pain at all in the following weeks. In fact... I ate steak and chicken wings that night lol. I got a bunch of those cotton balls and some pain killers but barely used any. Minor bruising showed on my face about 1 week later but most people couldn't see it. No problems talking or eating at all.
I definitely recommend going to a specialist and not just your average family dentist for scenarios like mine.

I got 4 wisdom teeth. Got 2 remove (on the right side). AND MAN IS WAS SUPER PAINFUL. According to my dentist, one of the wisdom teeth was really hard to remove it so he had to cut the teeth in half and pull it out.
Could sleep well (the pain would make me up at night), could eat soild food for a week at least....... not going to remove the other 2 unless I have to.

i had all 4 taken out by a oral surgeon last year cuz mine was growing sideways and near nerves and shit, forgot which anesthesia they used on me but i was knocked out completely, woke up and i was done, most painless procedure ever
to prevent looking like a chimpmunk, eat tons of pineapple a few days before the surgery, pineapple is a very powerful anti-inflammatory

Had my wisdoms removed at 16 or 17 I think. Went to a specialist, I don't exactly remember where his office was, my dentist had suggested I go to him and all I remember was going in and then being at home trying to get the gauze out of my mouth (which was an utter mistake, I was still bleeding a few hours after the procedure and bled all over my shirt)
Reason you're not supposed to eat is to make sure the anesthesia works. I was freaked out and didn't eat for like 1.5 days, I was knocked out for an extra hour or so.
Immediately after and for a day or so there was a lot of bleeding, but the oral surgeon gave me extra dental gauze or whatever and I just stuffed my face. Spent two days off playing DotA all day.
Doc also prescribed pain meds just in case, I think it was Tylenol 3, don't remember. It was great, though. From having them removed to having the gums completely healed up, there was zero pain for me, just some irritation and the -extremely weird feeling- that there are giant holes in your gums.
As for the stitches and people wondering about how you get them out, they're special dental stitches that dissolve after time.
If insurance covers most of it (ie you only have to pay for $500 of the bill), I'd definitely suggest going to a specialist. You're paying at least $500 either way, might was well pay for the person who is trained for this specific procedure.

I'm sure it's been mentioned, but no matter what. Always go for complete sedation! Local may traumatize you with all the blood and burning enamel.

He prescribed T3 for me but I never had to use it at all. In fact I was eating solid food the next day.
To my surprise I didn't feel any pain at all afterward and my cheek only swell for a day or two a week after the surgery
