If you want to be technical about it, Protestantism was a schism from Catholicism: 
I always wonder how someone does not know what sect of Christianity they're actually practicing? Isn't it written on your church?

You guys make me laugh. I'm definitely not the best Christian, I might be one of the worst. I only go because my family goes and my kid enjoys sunday school. I wouldn't go otherwise.

Do you believe in the life and teachings of Christ? Then you're a Christian. Catholics certainly do, therefore they are christians.

You know the story of King Henry VIII? Pope wouldn't grant him a marriage annulment from his first wife. That's when he said "Fuck you, I'm starting my own sect, called the Church of England, and I'm the new pope now bitch"
And thus the first "protestants" were born.
Otherwise the practices of Anglicans and Catholics are very similar. There are a lot of cases where Anglican priests have converted to catholicism (and still have wives and kids lol)
But it's not necessarily true that the pope is the leader of all Catholics, mostly "Roman Catholics" do. The head of the Orthodox Catholics is the Patriarch Bartholomew.
