I always get a good laugh at the "Vancouver doesn't plan for snow" comments.
Like sure, they could certainly buy a few dozen more plow trucks at many millions of dollars, and then have then ongoing annual maintenance and staffing costs, for them to site idle for 360 days a year...
Would you like that reflected in your property taxes?
I did once, just for the shitz and giggles. It was a 'polar bear' ride.
I used to ride in the snow all the time until I moved to Toronto. It's actually better here in the winter and in the snow, save for when there is frozen rain.

The alternative seems to be having all the crashes reflected in our insurance rates because everyone is too stupid to figure out they should stay home instead of trying to drive on snow with bald all seasons.

Let's not forget that the same people would be complaining that the government is wasting money when it turns out that it doesn't snow as much as expected, or that it doesnt stick, or that it warms up and melts anyway.
Weather forecasting is not perfect, especially in a coastal city that goes from sea level to up the mountains, where the temperature fluctuates around 0 degrees during the winter. Suddenly it's cold enough to ice up in some parts, then suddenly it melts an hour or two later when it's just a hint warmer.
If you pay attention when the forecast starts to dip during the winter, they actually do brine the roads. So they are being pro-active. Going full salt every time is just overkill.
The other thing is that the salt trucks and snow removal crews, even if they're ready to go, have to sit in the same traffic that the rest of us do when shit is fucked. They don't just magically appear in places, they have to still get there.
I think the bigger issue is that most people don't have actual winter tires. Your average person does not know shit about tires. If they see M+S, it's easy to think it's a snow tire, so they think they're safe.
It's the fact that they know a shit snow storm is coming but all business are open, heat wave warning, snow fall warning, got that essential service money to make, let's close the bridge, sky train and buses at noon.
At least in Hong Kong, Japan, third world country peasant town China if there's a storm or bad weather businesses/ schools are closed cuz they know shit is coming and they have the foresight to not put people in danger.
Oh I also think typhoons are a joke... but not the most recent T10 that shit was kinda cooked.
There was a T8 around the beginning of September.. nothing more than a Vancouver rain storm. Went for a run around the harbour and was disappointed I didn't get blown away.

As you can see in the below chart, the GINI index as of 2023 in SG is 70 vs HK at 63.
Gini Index coefficient - distribution of family income
Measures the degree of inequality in the distribution of family income in a country. The more nearly equal a country's income distribution, the lower its Gini index. The more unequal a country's income distribution, the higher its Gini index.

Vancouver will never be a Tier 1 city and that's okay.
We should just cherish the fact that we have natural beauty which has created enough of a demand for an airport with good connections around the world. If you want to experience a world class city, we can fly direct to nearly every one Tier 1 city in the planet.
I honestly wish we had better public transit though.
Re homelessness: There's even homeless in Tokyo, right by the municipal government buildings.
If anything, the population needs to grow for things to change (i.e. Vancouver's economic weight, standing globally, etc.). Projections see Greater Van growing to 4.1M by 2050. Things are already wayy different in Van compared to when I was a kid. I can only imagine what the place will look and feel like when you add another 1M to the population.

^ That's just an app that allows your to visually represent data in creative ways... the company (UBS) that published that data is a massive banking conglomerate based in Switzerland:
UBS manages the largest amount of private wealth in the world, counting approximately half of The World's Billionaires among its clients, with over US$6 trillion in assets (AUM).[9] Based on international deal flow and political influence, the firm is considered one of the "biggest, most powerful financial institutions in the world"
UBS investment bankers and private bankers are known for their strict bank–client confidentiality and culture of banking secrecy.[nb 2] Apart from private banking, UBS provides wealth management, asset management and investment banking services for private, corporate and institutional clients with international service. The bank also maintains numerous underground bank vaults, bunkers and storage facilities for gold bars around the Swiss Alps and internationally.
The company's capital strength, security protocols, and reputation for discretion have yielded a substantial market share in banking and a high level of brand loyalty. Alternatively, it receives routine criticism for facilitating tax noncompliance and off-shore financing. Partly due to its banking secrecy, it has also been at the centre of numerous tax avoidance investigations undertaken by U.S., French, German, Israeli and Belgian authorities.
Inequality getting better in US? By what fucking metric does this graph measure?
Better by 1% comparing 2023 to 2008. I don't think that's statistically important LOL. It's pretty much saying that the USA's income distribution has been pretty stable for 15 years and continuing LOL. Just like our Canadian policing response time metrics from earlier convo, 1995 response time was an acceptable metric, why change it LOL
I'll requote what the GINI coefficient is.

That metric needs a change considering the top half has 98% of all of the wealth in the country. But yeah I guess it’s just always been bad in recent times.
