There is more than this. This number only factors individual employees.

If you run a business you can clear 5 times what you are listing, but not actually pay that to yourself in income. The money can remain in the business, or go towards expenses like cars or properties in the businesses name.

Inside looks pretty nice, but fuckin Christ this is where we are at. Where 2 mil for a literal giant cardboard box with a garage qualifies as a decent idea. Fuck this place.

honestly, 2 mill for that... makes me wanna shoot myself in the face for living here.

What is the allure in Vancouver. I'm surprised there isn't a mass of average income Canadians burning down city halls across Vancouver in protest of these insane prices.

It rains like half the year, half the year youre in this gloom and doom weather. i swear once our old folks are gone, im gonna permanently move the fuck outta here.

I had two interesting perspectives on that in the last couple days

A colleague of mine is moving back to Japan, his wife is from there and her parents have a house there, they went back for a trip and kinda came back here and said Fuck Vancouver there’s nothing here for us anymore (renting a place, struggle to keep up etc.) I told him I was happy for him because it’s 100% understandable

Then I met up with a friend who lived and worked here for 6-7 years, a couple from Ireland. They both got citizenship while here but then moved back to Ireland right before Covid because each of them could make what they were making here, and slightly more, but in Euros, lower cost of living etc.

I told her I figured Canada was kind of turning into a shit hole and no real reason to stick around much more and she said after being in Canada for so long, moving back to Ireland she’s like fuck things are even worse in terms of social aspects, govt. etc.

I know Ireland isn’t really the pinnacle for quality of life but it was interesting.

Personally and I’ve said this before, if you don’t own a home and make a decent income, or at least have the possibility of both, I don’t see the appeal here. If you’re making 40-60k a year you can’t even live a lifestyle of going out and having fun, you can barely afford a roof over your head and food lol

Only thing I think that's holding everyone here I think are parents. Other wise I know friends who've moved to the island or Alberta for cheaper living. You can pretty much retire with a detached in Alberta if you own a condo here, raise your kids, go on vacations, buy and room for your toys since your cost of living and taxes will be lower. And less % of your income going towards housing.

There's a reason everyone in Alberta is a worse looking version of themselves. The lifestyle leaves you more money, but leaves you with FAR less opportunity for outdoor experiences which leaves your physical and mental health suffering.
In Alberta you are fat and depressed, here you're just depressed.

I haven't lived in Japan but have been in Shanghai for the past decade and here's my take. Vancouver was great growing up, my family was far from rich but my mom always put food on the table and a roof over my head. Never had the best toys but never not had anything either. Vancouver is slow, not much opportunity in my field, no nightlife, etc. so I decided to move to Shanghai. Living here, making 500k-1mil a year here is not un reasonable for those with drive, whereas in Vancouver it's almost unheard of. Although Shanghai can get expensive FAST, there are still options for cheap comfortable living if you're thrifty. It's much safer than Vancouver in terms of crime, drugs, gangs etc. However the downsides are there is a ton of people, mostly pretty rude, highly competitive, no personal space, and not much to do outside of bars, kareoke, and and city life. You'll get angry at the smallest things. So for me, the money isn't really worth my mental health.

What I'm trying to say is, the grass always seem greener on the other side, until you live there. Every place has its benefits and crap regardless of what country it is or what type of government runs it. It's all just the same sh!t in a different pile. Everyone's unique and can endure different things, just see what crap you can handle and move there. Vancouver isn't so bad if you have enough to put a roof over your heads and want a slow lifestyle with a small city feel.

The poorest person here can still laugh at them living in China.

Can they leave their homes yet?

Nightlife isn’t really a really a trade off for basic human rights.

It's tax optimal to pay yourself at least $100K, since marginal tax rate is still 32%, then hodl the rest in the holding co. But I agree with ya, most business owners wouldn't pay themselves out $250K+ annually unless they wanna buy cars and personal properties.

Most owners I know don't buy their R8's or nice homes in the holding co unless you're a youtuber. Hard to justify business use.

Where are you planning to go? I'm thinking island or Calgary then flying somewhere the other half of the year if I can work remote.

^ there's no motivation to work hard in Canada, the harder you work the more you get taxed. You literally get like 30% of your bonus after taxes and deductions. Better to be a crack head to get free drugs, free welfare and that free downtown condo. Why work when you can just get handouts.

Haven’t really decided yet but I’m thinking Gold Coast in Australia or New Zealand. Hopefully by then the wife will be a bit less materialistic (hahahah!!!) and we can just focus on travelling. I don’t really want to remain in one area for a long time, I much rather just feed my wanderlust.

I like the idea of spending 6 month in Japan, then 6 month in Europe, then 6 month in Asia, etc. just need a home base to store stuff and figure out taxes/medical/dental.

Hell I’ve always wanted to buy a 42foot leopard catamaran and literally sail to these places myself. But after watching countless hours of sailing YouTube videos, I’m worried the constant repairs will get old fast. Not to mention I don’t think I’ll get my sea legs that easily and the wife will be absolutely useless in emergency situations.

I'd suck a golfball through a garden hose for the opportunity to have PR in Gold Coast, lived there for 4 months, nice is an understatement

I have many ultra rich friends here as well. Sure they live in bund view large flats and drive exotics and such, but they dont seem to be that much happier. Mo money mo problems. If they earned their own money, they'll have a ton of worries to take care of with literally no time for family. If it's inherited, chances are they were not raised right and have no goals/motivation in life so no matter how many Ferarris they buy, they're an empty shell of a person. Once in a blue moon you get a super successful person who's content with their lives, but that's more than likely to happen in north america than asia.

I'm sure you're equally content with your life as your cousin is with theirs even though they drive nicer cars than you.

honestly from a Canadian living here for a decade, I don't feel my rights have been violated or lost in any way. In fact i feel it's more "free" here in a sense than canada in many ways. There's so many loop holes and under the table stuff that you can get away with a lot more than you can in canada if your open minded.

Of course this is based on the fact that you dont openly bad mouth the government and their policy, which can turn ugly pretty quick. I'm sure I would think differently if I was in the red with the government, which most people are not.

Dunno.. seems like a cop out.

I know some incredibly wealthy people who are all self-made here. People who came from incredibly humble beginnings now worth 50+ million with freedom to do whatever they want.

Also know of at least 3 or more people who are like 1-2 people away from me (friend of a friend, uncle of a friend, etc.) who have 80+ foot yachts and probably have family net worths of hundreds of millions.

These people are older, in their 60’s+ but with that said, I also know quite a few people I grew up with who also didn’t come from wealth who are doing amazing. Multiple homes, all the toys, etc.

In Canada you can’t just get a degree or an education and expect to be a success. Most people don’t even have the social skills to excel in any sort of business environment.

I think the far bigger issue is not these people, it’s the bottom third who will never be that success who can’t afford food
