I love telling my friends that live in 600k condos in downtown, that a meth shelter is a block away, that their taxes paid for.
Or that 30k of that was for "social project" as part of the agreement to build their building.

You go to work, so that someone else can smoke meth, get free housing, and a cheque every month

You think i dont want to smoke some fentanyl after a bad shift some times? Hell yeah i do, but if i did, there would be no money for your 8th ambulance ride back to your free condo a block away from me

I'm a complete NIMBY. I fully admit it. No shame.

Stay away from my street. Stay away from my neighbourhood. My house was effing expensive. We bought it for a reason. A quiet street/cul-de-sac with single family homes with decent sized yards, driveways, and kids playing in the street without parents having to watch over them.

When we lived near lower lonsdale, we bought a condo in a new complex and the rest of the area was also zoned for new construction of condos and townhouses. Whenever a sign popped up indicating another complex was about to be built, we couldn't complain. That's what we bought into: density. Even if the parking was bad and traffic was brutal some days. That was the deal.

But that's also why we saved like crazy and then moved to our house. We don't want to live next to a 4-plex.

Yes fine, this may be the inevitable future. But I can still complain about it.

I'll see myself out too. lol.

I don't think much of what you said falls into the kind of NIMBY-ish that YIMBYs like me have an issue with. The last point is where it might cross over - do you complain by writing to city council and do you tell lies about the impact of the changes to you? Are you actively trying to infringe on other people's property rights?

The bulk of the NIMBYs who show up to city council or who make the news are bald faced liars or entirely irrational.

If you want a real NIMBY story here's one: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...m_medium=email

Quote:
After two decades of promises, delays, and consultations, Vancouver’s Olympic Village neighbourhood is facing its last significant approval — but there are some in the community that want city hall to put on the brakes.

"If this big school is built on this tiny little piece of land, it will be the biggest mistake the city has made, and it will have negative ramifications for the village forever," said Joyce Resin.

Resin, who lives on the street across from the field where the school would be built, is a member of Village Voices, a group created to oppose the revamped proposal that heads to a public hearing at city hall on Thursday.
This lady is a Karen class NIMBY - the site of this school has been known for 20 years, it was part of the original Olympic Village plan and was only delayed b/c the province didn't offer up the funds. Meanwhile hundreds of kids went on waiting lists for kindergarten in the past 20 years. Funds have now shown up but the area has grown faster than expected so the school needs to be built bigger than originally planned - it needs to hold about twice as many kids and it needs to be 4 stories instead of 3 to fit the kids in.

It doesn't take much logic or rational thought to say she's full of shit - there's simply no way this is going to be the biggest mistake the city has ever made nor will the ramifications of adding a SCHOOL end up being bad for the area.

She CHOSE to live across the site of where the school was going to be built - this is like buying a house next to the airport and then complaining about the noise from the airport.

Fuck her and her type.

A temporary fitness centre eh? Wesgroup is going to build condos at Marine Way in the East Fraser Lands District in the future.

How is an elementary school a BAD thing? How is this a huge mistake? What's wrong with this woman?

I can't even think of which elementary school would serve these kids. I think there's one called False Creek Elementary, and another near Andy Livingstone Park (not 100% sure) and then there's Strathcona, which is quite a hike for kids and parents.

Some people actually get mad at kid noises during recess/lunch and the surge of traffic at 8am and 3pm.

Some people buy near an airport and get upset about jet noises, some people buy near the burnaby oil tank farm and get mad when they expand the pipelines.

Can't win them all.

My issue is, why do we need to build affordable housing in the most expensive area in Vancouver? It's like me demanding to live in central HK, or going into the Porsche dealer and demanding them to pay their fair share and subsidize the cost of a GT3 to a mazda 3.

imagine that annoying bell noise at school start, recess, lunch, end of school.
they'll be woken up from naps 4x a day!

The belief is that diverse neighbourhoods are good for society - that building affordable housing (social housing or rent controlled housing) in well off neighbourhoods is good for both parties. The poors get access to amenities that they wouldn't otherwise get access to while the rich are "forced" to mix with the poors which helps reduce elitism and classism. For the poors it increases their odds of climbing the income ladder.

This is not a new thing - the False Creek South area, one of the most valuable pieces of land in Vancouver is all co-op housing (https://www.falsecreeksouth.org/neig...d-association/).

Can't wait, we talked to the owner of the new courts in Richmond, all the youngins in their late 20's opening them. Profits there.

everything full booked within 1 second of release, it's like golf tee times.

friends are tryna build one out in langley, awaiting permits. I wanna co-own too but alas everyone's too rich, don't need money lol

Here's a clip regarding the Vancouver development plan for the next 30 years which is having a public hearing next week.

Quote:
AI breakdown:

1. Much easier to add density

Large parts of the city that were historically single-family zoning will allow multiplexes, townhouses, and small apartments.
This is especially relevant on the Vancouver West Side, where lots are large and under-utilised.

2. Fewer public hearings for projects

If a project follows the ODP rules, it may skip public hearings entirely.
This means less neighbourhood veto power and faster approvals for developers.

3. Land assemblies become more common

When density increases, developers start buying multiple neighbouring houses together.
This is already happening in parts of South Vancouver and along major corridors.

4. Property values may shift

Homes with assembly potential (corner lots, near transit, large lots) may become more valuable.

Houses in areas expected to stay low density may see less upside.

5. More mid-rise buildings in residential areas

Expect 4–6 storey buildings and stacked townhouses appearing in areas that previously only allowed houses.
This will gradually change neighbourhood character over the next 20–30 years.

Simple takeaway

The ODP is basically Vancouver saying:
“We’re pre-planning density everywhere so housing approvals happen faster.”
