2013 Emergency Refresh Civic Goes on Sale -- Nov 29

Honda warns dealers to clear out 2012 Civic stock, 2013 emergency refresh on sale Nov. 29

Quote:

Thanks to an anonymous tipster, Autoblog has learned that the so-called "emergency refresh" of the Honda Civic is just around the corner. In fact, the automaker is already urging its dealers to clear out remaining 2012 model year stock because "The changes made to the 2013 model will make the outgoing 2012 Civic a difficult model [to] sell when they are side to side." Those are the words of David Hendley, Assistant Vice President of Honda National Sales excerpted from a recent letter to dealers. The communiqué goes on to note that the refreshed Civic will go on sale on November 29 – a date, we note, that coincides with press days for the Los Angeles Auto Show.

According to Hendley's letter, buyers can look forward to "dramatic improvements to the exterior styling that moves Civic into a more premium sporty direction." The text also promises that the 2013's interior will receive "upgrades and improvements to bring more sophistication and quality to its appearance." For his part, American Honda President Tetsuo Iwamura has previously been quoted as saying that changes will be made to "improve the Civic's drivability," suggesting suspension and powertrain alterations are afoot as well.
In other words, don't go out and buy a brand new Civic now. Either wait for the emergency refreshed 2013 model, or wait for the big discounts on the current 2012 models.

The 9th gen Si sedans look great in my opinion, in comparison to the 8th gen Si sedans.

dont mean to turn this into an old>new civic thread

personally I think the EF sedans has the most character (excluding the FD2R)
in terms of coupe/hatch it's hard to beat the EK chassis

that said I saw a modded 9g sedan the other day..damn it looked good

I wonder what it will look like..

I don't understand how there could be an "emergency" refresh? According to the article, it seems like these new changes will be so drastic that it could hinder the 2012's sales? If that's the case, surely there's got to be leaked images out, how could Honda keep the production of the new civic under wrap and then suddenly tell all dealers to clear out the 2012 models without having a media session or leaked images?

Seems weird to me...

ive heard rumors of a hatchback for the 2013 model? not sure if true

Not quite sure how it would... "dramatic improvements to the exterior styling that moves Civic into a more premium sporty direction."

It's not really an emergency, since Honda announced they would refresh it a couple months into 2012. It's just the wording given from the media to exaggerate it. It's more like a reminder to the dealers.

Honda's latest styling has been "evolutionary."

Their 8g -> 9g cars, Civics, Accords, CRV's, etc, haven't seen the big change as they've seen from the 7g -> 8g.

Not necessarily a bad thing, since it's subjective. The interior on the other hand :heckno:

I've been in both coupes and sedans of both 8g and 9g, and 9g feels terribly cheap. They tried to mask the cheapness by making it funky, but it just makes it worse IMO.

Hopefully they address this in this "refresh"

It is an emergency in the sense that the 9th gen car was universally panned by all automotive journalists, including those from Consumer Reports. IIRC, the CR review ranked them dead last (or 2nd last) when the 8th gen car was still earning their CR recommended distinction.

Typically, you don't see facelifts on cars until well into the 3rd or 4th year of the car. For the 9th gen Civic to get a major facelift only 1 year after its initial sale, that in itself showed how much of an emergency it was to Honda.

RE-Jo 10-23-2012 07:51 PM

At least Honda is willing to admit to that there is a problem with their "products" of late, and make changes that seem to be going in the right direction (I.E. new Accord).
I am excited to see what the new civic will look like.

I like the 9th gen sedan! Nice lines, not too aggressive but still sporty look. 2.4L 200hp 160tq on the Si? Feelin it

It's like the 5 or 6 blackberry phones that are to be released next year. No one knows because no one cares anymore. The civic has become overpriced for what it actually is. Those who want the sporty si version could get a FRS or the veloster turbo for more power. And say you wanted it for pure gas savings, there's the Mazda 2, prius C etc. IMO, I would like to see a civic type R, but even that won't save it. Maybe if they made the civic look like a super car haha

So what are the new enhancements?

platinum300 10-23-2012 08:06 PM

I have a feeling it may look similar to the Acura ILX

TypeRNammer 10-23-2012 08:26 PM

I can see the Acura ILX having a major update one year from its initial release date...

The interior of the current civic is a sea of hard plastic. I hope the refresh comes with soft touch materials... that really helps a car feel more upscale.

Eff-1 10-23-2012 09:28 PM

Good old days.

True, Honda did eventually came around to recognize the shortcomings in the Civic, and by the look of things, they also seem to finally catch on to the fact that the overwhelming majority of their current products suck, and are gradually taking action to correct it. I guess the message only took a good 8 - 10 years to sink in?

Let's hope they can get back into the game and make us some fun cars all over again.
