The point isn't that it's a headshot. The point is that the NHL is wildly inconsistent in what gets punished and what does not, both on the ice by the refs and off the ice by the DoPS, and there is a definite pattern, which makes corruption/politics appear to play a major role.

Without any major personnel changes, we went from one of the least penalized teams in the league with 0 suspensions to one of the most penalized teams in the league with many suspensions. Coincidentally, this happened after our run to the finals when we got labelled as a heel.

start at 42 sec

unless I'm blind I don't see a headshot?

lol.

SkinnyPupp 10-11-2013 03:34 PM

Yeah looks like his helmet jumped out of the way on its own

Edit: Just read some more reactions on the previous page and holy shit what a bunch of homers.

Hertl wasn't "turtling" he was going for the puck. That's what makes it a dirty headshot. Was he sticking his elbow out wildly? No. He kept his arm tucked, and did it well enough that the refs didn't even see it.

But you can clearly see it's a headshot, from a repeat offender no less.

I know people will stick up for their teams, but come on....

This isn't as bad as the morons who stuck up for Bertuzzi mind you, but come on.

cdizzle_996 10-11-2013 04:04 PM

Lol....

I can't believe some of you.

spideyv2 10-11-2013 05:54 PM

Agree with SP for once.

The helmet flew off by itself, right guys?

I swear to god, this thread is inching closer towards CDC retardation, everyday

Remember this that happened last month?

Oh wait, no suspension. Clear flying hit to the head.

Even the refs didn't call against Edler, because it wasn't THAT big of a deal.

Yeah bro, total headshot that caused his head to not snap back.

Looks like his helmet was undone, a collision at that speed should not pop a helmet off that easy. He also pulled a Taylor hall and dipped into the check creating the "hit to the head". IMO that's what they really need to get rid of, the dips before the hit. That and the perioete and whiplash inducing head snap when contact is made

At a young age, they always teach you to brace for the hit, not lunge and reach forward when there's a guy coming at you. As you decide to make that play, you already know you're gonna get pummeled.

He could have let up.

UFO 10-11-2013 07:18 PM

Exactly, a headshot with the intent to hit the guy's head as 'principle point of contact' is one thing. A hit that happens to hit the guys head because the guy put himself into that position is a completely different thing. The way I see it, Hertl essential ran into Edler head first.

Look at it this way, is there anyway Edler could have NOT hit Hertl's head? Hertl could have kept going for the puck along the board, he would have been smoked by Edler with a full head of steam. He saw this and ducked out at the last second and put himself into a vulnerable position, Edler had no way of changing his direction or even stopping. Look at how Edler crashes into the board like a fool after, had he been going for the headshot he would have leaned into Hertl instead of going straight into the board.

And with Shanaban logic, no injury should mean no suspension, right? If Shanaban suspends based on intent and not injury, he would make his own job so much easier. Him being a player should have made that so much easier in theory anyways.

trancehead 10-11-2013 07:25 PM

lol , first of all, edler is fucking coasting towards the puck. not very malicious at all

once Edler has commited his path towards the puck, he cant go back when in such proximity to Hertl
he braces for the hit from an oncoming Hertl who is still striding, which Hertl foolishly instead sinks lower looking for skittles on the floor

principle point of contact being the head? yes when you put yourself in a vulnerable position like that. so not a valid argument from shanny

kid has got to learn to keep his head up

UFO 10-11-2013 08:00 PM

Quote:

"Edler does not hit Hertl squarely," said NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan in a video explaining the suspension. "He cuts across the front of Hertl, making the head the main point of contact."

Shanahan also said although Hertl had made himself vulnerable by reaching for the puck, he was not to blame for the check to the head.

"Although Hertl is leaning forward, the position of his head does not materially change immediately prior to, or simultaneous with the hit that significantly contributes to this head contact," said Shanahan. "Aside from his helmet popping up into the air, Hertl's reaction to this hit -- getting spun rather than getting driven into the direction Edler was travelling -- reaffirms our view that his head is the main point of contact."
1. So Shanny is saying Edler cut infront of Hertl, and not Hertl cutting back to avoid getting pasted.

2. Shanny acknowledges that Hertl put himself into a vulnerable position.

3. The whole business about getting spun on the hit, well yeah had Hertl not changed up his speed/direction, he would have been pasted, see #1. Edler was in no position to stop, change direction, anything. He just glided, braced, and looked like an idiot for running into the board.

4. I don't think anybody doubts the head is the main point of contact. Question is who caused this contact? Not much of a question IMO, but feel free to call me a homer.

You're not blind. Its hard to see but I think he pulled his head back and avoided contact.. if Edler did get a piece, it was minimal, more like a graze.

I look at hits objectively. I don't think this was malicious. I agreed with Kassian's suspension and feel as though this one wasn't warranted.

I've seen helmets fly off people on the ice with regular hits. It makes it look worse for sure, but it doesn't necessarily mean head shot.. he spun around with a lot of momentum.

I'm glad the Flames are doing well, not because I like them, but because it makes the Edmonton 'rebuild' look even more ridiculous
