and Nexus is a joke, too much restriction on what you can bring with you when you cross the border. ZERO tools allowed. ZERO. Not even a Jack. I asked, was told "too bad", leave those home
seriously? Obviously the oem one should be ok, but like what if my car breaks down? What if I'm going to track day? Gonna need tools. Just take the passport line I guess?

Border guard at the nexus lane and nexus office at the airport told me the same thing. I'm not sure if it's because of my occupation or if it's because i drove a company registered car over the border with tools. I have asked multiple times and they keep giving me the same response. No tools allowed.

So anyway this week i went across in my personal car and i didn't use the nexus lane, told the guard straight up i've got my tools because i'm heading to a pick n pull, he was cool with it.

I believe it's simply a matter of local trades protection, we were carrying a leafblower and mower in the family vehicle through the nexus lane for yard work at our home and they asked more questions than usual but let us through shortly afterwards

Last week, I travelled using Nexus to ship out an item at Point Roberts, I was referred to Secondary (first time for me).

I collect Hot Toys figurines, and was doing a 1 for 1 trade online.
So when the USCBP border agent asked if I had anything to declare, I told him, I was shipping out an item at In/Out parcel.

He asked "Did you sell it?"
I said "no, its a 1 for 1 trade"

He asked "Did you have a Form 7753 filled out?"
Me: "Um... Sorry, I have no idea what that is sir."

BAM.

"Sir, you are not allowed to use the Nexus lane for commercial transactions!"
"You're referred into Secondary! You'll be lucky if they don't revoke your Nexus"

At this point I'm like . . . wtf did I do.

So I go into Secondary, and the Border Agent was way nicer.
He asked what I was shipping, and verified it through my facebook messenger chat.

So I asked to clarify the issue.

He stated that anything sold or even traded, is considered to be a commercial transaction, and that I'm considered to be a broker? lol.

And that I must use the commercial lane for the future should I plan to do this again.

Paid a $13 fee for commercial transaction and I was on my way.....

Whatever... their home their rules lolz.

I actually posted a reply to this, in the wrong thread (Nexus thread):

They said that a small roadside repair/emergency kit is allowable. But don't exceed that. It was still pretty vague, but she said to keep it vehicle related. Before I replaced everything in my e46, I used to carry all 3 tool boxes.

The issue that the previous poster had was that they brought tools in the work truck. Anything business related can not be brought over (in the Nexus lane) including files, with the exception of a laptop.

There are no restriction on "tools" specifically, If you actually look up the regulations it states commercial goods. However if they have a suspicion that you will be using the tools for work then it will be a problem. For example a work truck with tools, or having a toolbox in your truck/car. There is no reason to think your jack or factory tool kit is going to be used for commercial purposes.

so theres the full story!

you're allowed to bring whatever tools as long as its personal use. being in the company car pretty much makes anything with you commerial.

anything for commercial use or goods is NOT allowed in nexus lane as ruled out in your application

driving and flights same rules apply

Also, whatever you do, when you bring things across for anything that involves even a non-profit organization, just say it's for personal use. I made that mistake once. Had to fill out forms and contact a fricken brokerage firm. Delayed me by two hours. If I had said it was for my own personal use, I would have been across without an issue. Item was $35 USD. Lesson learned.

I just did it last week... But since you don't trust me. Looks like it's not even limited to one person if you're on same flight

https://www.catsa-acsta.gc.ca/en/trusted-travellers

Trusted Travellers include:
members of NEXUS and Global Entry programs;
currently serving members of the Canadian Armed Forces and U.S. military, including reservists, all with valid ID (no uniform required);
Canadian aircrew and airport workers with Restricted Area Identification Cards (RAICs);
international aircrew in uniform with valid airline ID; and
those accompanying these trusted travellers on the same flight.

really odd then that they strictly enforce you to use regular lanes if not everyone in the vehicle is a trusted traveller

Yikes -- This morning a man drove north through the border without stopping and sped all the way to 10th and Alma and only stopped when he crashed.

https://mediareleases.vpd.ca/2018/09...y-with-arrest/

Is it just me, or does 10th and Alma seem a bit far into Canada from the border?

I'd imagine the CBSA stopped their chase where they broadcasted the vehicle's description to police and the guy ended crashing in Vancouver.

At around 8:20 a.m., the VPD was notified by the Surrey RCMP that a man driving a blue pick-up truck with Oregon licence plates had driven through the border minutes before without stopping and was speeding towards Vancouver. A few minutes later, VPD officers located the truck driving in the area of West 16th Avenue and Oak Street.

“The radio equipment used by first responders across the Lower Mainland allows them to talk to each other during emergencies. Efficient communication between agencies led to the swift arrest of this man who made unauthorized entry into Canada,” says VPD Constable Jason Doucette.
I'm assuming Surrey RCMP followed him initially but them lost him before VPD found him again? Otherwise taking minutes to notify them and then the guy not being spotted until he was downtown hardly seems efficient.

I'm more surprised that he got across the border. Actually not that surprised. You would think CBSA would have stopped him. But the design of our border as compared to the US side is far too simple. Weak barriers, straight light through - just speed bumps. Both Peace arch and Pacific X-ing have a pretty intricate set of turns after the window.
