Honestly the people who should stir the pot should be people who complainded about the Chinese signs in Richmond, they would have the most to gain if they deftly exploit this incident.

:lol

That gave me a chuckle.

If people on this board are really mad.. give them Anthony "I have a ISF for sale" treatment and make them Vancouver Superstars.

So a few weeks back I had a customer in here a brown guy that just blurted out "go back home you fuckin dipper!" at another brown dude runnin down the street yellin up a storm. When he looked back at me he could tell I was shocked and he says to me "I hate these fuckin dippers! Why come to Canada in the first place if your gonna act the same as back home?!" Now after having my shop in Richmond for a few years and living there plus my daughter attending both high school and elementary I couldnt help but notice a fair portion of the immigrants in Richmond have the same mentality as many of those in Surrey and this guy an immigrant himself hit the nail on the head.
I had always kept my mouth shut I didnt want anyone looking down upon me for my observations but even some of the better adapted immigrants feel the same way as I'm sure he wasnt the only one with such views he just had the courage or lack of filter to express them.
Now what this family needs to do and I'm sure many others like them is think how would this scenario unfold if the roles were reversed and it was a Canadian in their country. I say Canadian because being Canadian has nothing to do with where your from or the color of your skin but your acceptance of a nation its people and its culture.
Language and customs are always a barrier but its up to you to fit in not the other way around. You chose to emigrate to another country you have to take the responsibility to accept that culture and embrace it or whats the point of even going there?

i worked (and still working) retail in both burnaby and richmond. I don't speak canto but a lot of cantonese speaking people gives me crap because i "look like" i can speak canto but then i actually cant. They will say things like "oh you work here (aberdeen center) and you cant speak cantonese? How did you get the job" and shit like that (in very thick chinglish accent though lol). Though that is one of the more harsher things that was said to me but yea i do get attitude like that few times a week.

They also get mad when i speak english.....sooooo yea i often feel pretty stupid for things that are out of my control. But i get what you're feeling.

my point of view might be very different from u guys, as my mom was is not english speaking & she try very very very hard to learn but fail many many times

it was to the point where a grow ass woman was taking classes with little elementary kids, she felt very depressed as she could not learn the language

this is why i try to speak chinese to chinese speaking people when they cant understand english too well

If you had spoken english at home, she'd be 100% fluent by now ;)

Just saying, because I am kind of in the same situation. I am also embarrassed about it, and highly appreciative when someone tries to accommodate me.

this just before i was born & after my parents divorced in 96 she just gave up on it

i still remember to this day how every night she put me to sleep, then turn on the table lamp to study, she would cry every night because of how she just couldnt get it but was too embarrass to let us know

im sure the person suing McD is not in the same shoes as my mom, since im pretty sure even if she cant speak there will be someone there to help her out

A large portion of these encounters are with large pickup trucks or large SUV's. Some of them sporting big chrome rims.

Most incidents in Richmond are less outright aggressive, and more passive aggressive. Things like cutting across two lanes to make a turn without any consideration to other drivers, or stopping in the middle of the street and waiting to pick up or drop off somebody.

Agreed on all points.

government offers free english classes at VCC.

My cousin did it when he emigrated here from greece.

Fail excuse.

After 1 year he's pretty fluent.

He also didn't get a job with other greeks.

I think you guys using the whole official language is X & Y should rethink your strategy.

with enough social and political pressure... a stroke of a pen will all it takes to bust your guys's argument.
