2008 WRX w/195k kms for $8888 (ugh). Is this a good deal? I know STI's tend to have really high resale, but this looks clean.

whitev70r 12-18-2021 12:55 PM

Not sure if it is a good deal but it is probably one of the ugliest WRX gens out there .. if not THE ugliest.

The wrx/STI market has absolutely blown up in 2020-2021 it’s insane. The cheapest 08+ STi on CL is like 22k, go back a little and they were 12k

Even pre-pandemic, I saw STI's go for high teens and low 20's. I actually didn't mind the hatchback WRX when it came out. If anything, I would argue that the latest WRX is the worst by a wide margin:

Prob ... if I was in the market, I'd wait for the 2006-7 gen, best by far ... I think. Like this one with even less kms than that 2008.

Is there a non-ugly WRX? Seems like every single one they've ever released looked like someone was forced to kiss their sister.

whitev70r 12-18-2021 04:28 PM

^ Now you're just being mean ... haha. I think we have a lot of Subies here.

I don't think they're the most attractive cars out there, but the GC8's look pretty good.

westopher 12-18-2021 04:41 PM

They are all awesome and ugly in their own way. I'd never call them pretty cars, but pretty much any STI is awesome.

They're kinda like the cast of Sex and the City - at the right angles you'd might want to smash bits. I will say that the Saab 9-2x was good looking.

Petter Solberg would like to speak to you

Is the Q45 that comfy compared to lets say a G35?

Proof that it's what's on the inside that counts :lol

The bugeye wagon is still one of the ugliest cars I've ever seen though. You just can't fix the weird headlights and the "wagon" bit is like a tumour. The STi looks okayish but I just can't get past the headlights. I'd take one over the new one though, better ugly than boring.

JDMDreams 12-19-2021 08:59 AM

Are older 2000s WRX STI, worth even getting? I've kinda wanted a hawk eye, or forester xt. Or are you just looking at a money pit like BMW's. I don't think you can get away from head gaskets, turbos? I've driven a few JDM legacy's but the fuel tuning, knocking and valley of death lag scared me away.

whitev70r 12-19-2021 09:34 AM

When you look at that generation of cars in general, I don't think you can get away from head gaskets. ANY car that has hit 150K kms or more is going to have to do it. As well as turbos if it is in the range of 10-15 years old. I have not heard of one car brand where a > 150K kms,15 yo car in which there isn't oil burning, turbo leaking, head gasket or cam seals. Just factor in the price when purchasing or a bit of bonus if it's been done already.

I thought I heard that turbo EJ25's didn't eat HG's like the NA motors. Makes me wonder if a 2000's WRX would be any more reliable than a late model E46. Maybe parts are cheaper?

Having had the EJ25 non-turbo and an E46 before. EJ25 even with the head gasket issue is miles ahead of the E46 from my experience for reliability. Yea, the HG is a big job but its one big job and that's about it and yea, parts are significantly cheaper than euro. The E46 would piss itself and throw a code every other month, then somehow every part you need is special order from Germany somehow, money pit.

JDMDreams 12-19-2021 10:34 AM

Well to think of it from the 2000s performance cars, they really weren't that bad, s2000, k20 24 Honda's, acuras, Lexus, Infiniti, Nissan were fairly reliable. Even German cars were decent as they were pre turbo, AMG was still na. Except BMW's and Audi's.
