Dubinsky signs six-year extension with Blue Jackets - NHL.com

Quote:
Center Brandon Dubinsky signed a six-year contract extension with the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday. Financial terms were not released but Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch reported the total value to be $35.1 million, for an average annual value of $5.85 million. He also reported the contract has a no-movement clause for the first three years and a limited no-trade clause for the final three.

Dubinsky, 28, could have become an unrestricted free agent following the 2014-15 season. His new contract, which starts with the 2015-16 season, keeps him in Columbus through 2020-21.
at this point I would rather have just Dubinsky over Nash, NYR gave up Dubinsky, Anisimov, Erixion and their 1st

It's already overwhelming during/after games/events and during business rush hours.

Dubinsky looks like a player who gives it all on the ice. and was able to shutdown Crosby this post season

i remember him most for his time on 24/7 after the Anisomov knee drop snipe goal celebration post scrum:

I know the eras are different but man.... When a 50pt guy can make nearly $7mill nowadays.... The generation where Lafontaine finished fuckin 4th in the scoring race with 143pts one year must be shaking their heads wondering what they would have gotten lol

The NHL wasn't anywhere near as big of a business then as it was now.

Also, technology has made scoring substantially harder. Players have much better protection, making shot blocking less risky. Goalie equipment has made even larger strides and allowed for the butterfly style to become practical where it was once essentially impossible. Leather pads get extremely heavy and slippery when wet and the quality of the chest protectors and masks were abysmal compared to today's equipment.

If you normalize it to today's numbers, 143 points then is roughly equivalent to 102 points today (approx. 7 goals per game then compared to approx. 5 goals per game now), which is still awesome, but not mind-blowing.

i think equipment has alot less to do with it than just the gap between the shittiest players and the best is minimal, where as when players were scoring 150 pt's there were dman who could barely skate

This.

It's funny when you watch archived footage of hockey 2 or 3 decades ago, you'll absolutely see clearly night and day how much the quality of today's hockey has progressed.

As much as it's taboo to trivialize the Great One, but Gretzky even in twilight years wouldn't be as ahead of everyone today as he was back in his days; but that's just IMO

You are correct equipment has nothing to do with it these days since the past 15 or so years its changed a bunch but not as much as it has from the 80's to 90's. When I first started playing I had a one piece wood stick with a straight blade I used a blow torch to curve the blade with. The biggest development is the sticks but everyone has the same advantage with that these days.

Gretzky was so far ahead of everyone else in the mid-80s that it wasn't even fair.

'81-'82:
Gretzky - 212 points
2nd highest scorer - 147 points
Difference - 44.2%

'82-'83:
Gretzky - 196 points
2nd highest scorer - 124 points
Difference - 58.1%

'83-'84:
Gretzky - 205 points
2nd highest scorer - 126 points
Difference - 62.7%

'84-'85:
Gretzky - 208 points
2nd highest scorer - 135 points
Difference - 54.1%

'85-'86:
Gretzky - 215 points
2nd highest scorer - 141 points
Difference - 52.5%

'86-'87:
Gretzky - 183 points
2nd highest scorer - 108 points
Difference - 69.4%

We're talking a 6-season span where he outscored the 2nd highest scorer each year by an average of 56.8% ...

Imagine the Canucks had a player who scored 600 points over 6 seasons ... for an average of 100 points per season ... and how awesome that would be ...

And now think about that amazing player we have ... finishing second in the scoring race every year ... for 6 consecutive years ... getting outscored by the same player ... by an average of 57 points every fucking season ...

That's how much better Gretzky was than everyone else ...

I think the biggest difference is goalies... Go watch a video of a goalie in the 80's and compare it to today. So many shots back then the goalies didn't even flinch..

Comparing any era is stupid. The players at the time were the best because of the conditions they played in. Gretzky may not have scored as many points in the modern era...or he may have scored twice as much. You never know.

There wasn't the same kind of money in the 90s when Selanne was a 130 point rookie. There are some guys that played back in the day that just have regular people money today...like CFL players.

Exactly, but even today's "stand up" or "hybrid" doesn't just kick a leg up..

Not to take anything away from the great one, but who's to say Jeff Cowan couldn't score 50 on goalies that played like this..

Completely different eras, young players today have plenty of resources online to help improve their game. I'm pretty sure even the higher tier goalies in beer league nowadays could play in the NHL back then haha.
