Is there a good real why we don't have universal bolt patterns? Cars are pretty much all running 17-18in wheels and 3000lb these days.

EvoFire 11-21-2021 11:52 PM

It's usually not a problem as most new cars are now either 5x114 or 5x112 because BMW moved from 5x120 to 5x112 on their new cars. There are the oddball ones like Subaru small Toyotas doing 5x100, and 5x108 with Ford/Volvo. Oh and Honda doing a mix of 5x114 and 5x120.

Is it legitimately recommended to buy a separate set of lug nuts for winter?

Unless your summer wheels and winter wheels have different seats (ie. conical vs ball), then no. If yes, then yes you should because the wrong type of lug nut will not fasten/torque properly on the wheel.

Totally variable. Lots of factors

- aftermarket wheels? Do the oem lugs physically fit? Or need a “tuner kit” with the small splined lugs and thin wall adapter/socket
- are the oem lugs the correct seat type? For the average car they use conical seats, and 90% of aftermarket wheels have conical.

Stock Honda runs spherical, so unless you get specific Honda steelies or wheels they won’t work. Toyota mostly runs mag style seats, but they have a small taper at the end which allows them to be used with steel wheels (just check the spare).

bcrdukes 11-22-2021 12:55 PM

Not going to lie - the car has been only to the Toyota dealer we purchased it from becaues they threw in the extended maintenance and warranty for free so I've been zero out of pocket for winter wheels swaps. They threw in free winter steelies and tires and have been using the factory lug nuts w/o saying a peep.

CorneringArtist 11-22-2021 02:46 PM

The Toyota alloy lug nuts run the chance of corrosion internally building in the threads which can cause seizure, but it’s rare that it does.

That said, steel wheel nuts from Toyota are around 25 bucks a set, so it doesn’t hurt.

underscore 11-22-2021 06:14 PM

I got a second set to use with the steelies on my wifes old Matrix purely because I thought the stock seat style lugs using the taper at the end looked funny lol. If you're ever in Kelowna you can have them, somehow I've inherited more sets of M12x1.5 lug nuts than I know what to do with.

I find the Toyota mag lugs can swell over time. But it’s a minuscule problem compared to Ford. Fuck the bean counter who has never changed that issue

Thanks guys :fuckyea:

Sorry for the interruption, but I came across this FB post about witner tires, and I just find that it'd be a sin if I don't share it here on RS:

I refuse to put on winter tires because:
This is my car, my choice, my freedom.
The effectiveness of winter tires isn't proven, unless it's from studies conducted by the manufacturers (you're surprised).
My neighbor Fernande was in an accident after putting her winter tires on.
Some are already at their 3rd game of tires, this proves their inefficiency.
We don't know what they are made of
Tire giants scare us with winter just to get rich.
Btw, it was the tire giants who invented snow and spread it at night when you sleep.
If I have tires the government can follow me in the snow.
Educate yourself, open your eyes, stop being a sheep!
This year winter tires I say no!
And we all know we're just talking about tires here. :lawl:

And now, back to the regular program...

trollface 11-29-2021 07:52 AM

Winter tires gave me 5g.

AzNightmare 12-03-2021 03:18 PM

Looks like we're about to get a bit of snow.

I better put on my winter tires tonight, lol.

Did Acura604 put his winters on already though? :troll:

Teriyaki 12-03-2021 03:40 PM

It won't be sticking with the temps we've had this week.

But it's finally cold enough though that I think it's time to swap.
I think this is the point where it's not going to bounce back above 7°C until winter's over.

Mounted for the snow tomorrow where I live.

Did you change your setup? Or just gonna yolo @rovert?

I put my wife’s winters on yesterday. Her a/s are almost done so I wanted as much mileage out of them before swapping.

Fortunately I found another pair of M Sport OEM wheels on Craigslist for winters since my E46M wheels were too nutso of offset.

I did change the spacer setup from 15mm front and 12mm rear with my Conti DWS. With the Michelins, the shoulder is much more square compared to more round with the Conti DWS. So I removed the spacer from the rear and swapped the 15mm to 12mm for front. All good now!

Acura604 12-06-2021 09:11 AM

I gotta admit, this is the longest since i've held off on the wheel/tire swap - ... WFH and SHAWD...meh...for these types of snowfalls...the Acura is quite capable in stock form.

...maybe next weekend....wheels/tires still on deck...

They look comfy and warm. Your tires might be princess tires. Just keep a blanket over them this season. [emoji23]

yup...i'm going to take all 4 to my bed and spend time picking out the little pebbles from each of them... really helps me build a bond with them.

LOL wow. You just tugged at my heart strings. I was staring at them as I rolled the winters from the shed. Haha
