Thanks for the tip. Got ahold of Google tech support, and was told that our 5X was out of warranty. But then the service rep continued on and voluntarily offered to check with his supervisor / manager to see if he can do a manual courtesy warranty replacement. At that point, I knew it was going to be OK.

I have to say both Google tech support as a group and the telephone support staff were excellent. Friendly, courteous, and efficient. There was absolutely no beating around the bush.

It is interesting to note that for this particular call, the support person was based in the Philippines. However, he was speaking with a typical N.American accent. I know certain telephone support centers in India doing support work for big N.American firms specifically train their staff to speak with a N.American accent. I wonder if this is a case similar to that.

Contrary to the support staff that you spoke to, my guy specifically told me to only include the dead phone (albeit a 5X) and leave the charger and accessories out. Interesting to note the difference.

Oops, didn't see your reply until now. Glad you got a hold of them, I had a similar experience with them being extremely courteous. Did they seem particularly interested in whether the 5X felt hot and how hot it felt? And whether or not a charger other than the included one was used?

Their e-mailed instructions say:
Include the device, plus any packaging and accessories. Pack well to ensure nothing is damaged in transit.
When I received the replacement, though, it was the phone only in a plain cardboard box and a USB A-C cable. I'm going to hang on to the charger that came with my phone.

So far I haven't started using my replacement device, probably out of paranoia. I booted it up to install all of the security updates etc and it started to feel warm -- probably normal but enough for me to continue thinking of selling it for a couple hundred dollars instead.

Traum 09-12-2017 12:51 PM

The Google tech initially wanted to go through some checks with me on the phone (like going into safe mode, and probably resetting the device back to factory state). As I understand, that is their standard diagnostics practice. However, when I told him that the phone was already stuck in a boot loop, gets hot, and stayed that way until the battery runs out, he didn't insist on going through other diagnostic steps.

Thank you for telling me about your plain cardboard box replacement. I'll make sure I don't return the charger (since they won't include a new one). In a previous Nexus 5X replacement/exchange incident, Google actually sent me a whole brand new package, and I was to return the charger and cable as well. But that was way back when the phone was still relatively new. I'm guessing a package like that means it was a brand new unit, whereas a plain box version is a refurb.

But hey, I am not complaining even if I only get a refurb. If it somehow breaks down again, it would really be the time to get a new (and different) phone.

Gh0stRider 09-12-2017 07:57 PM

I only inquired about the accessories because the replacement came with new set of accessories.

Apparently they are replacing the 6P with the Pixel XL now. That's amazing. Too bad I have the Nexus 6. I don't think that would work.

We lucked out, woot!

Only if you bought direct from Google. I have battery issues with my 6p, but mine was from Telus. If you bought yours from a carrier, you're SOL. I gave them a call the other day.

On another note, my battery life is better on Oreo than Nougat. Still not great but better than before.

BillyBishop 09-18-2017 01:07 PM

Day 4 with my Google-replaced refurbished 5X and so far so good. Battery life improved significantly after the OTA update to Oreo, except for last night.

Battery went from 21% to 0% instantly. Attempted rebooting and it got as far as half way through the boot process a couple times before it shut off again. Normally with a 0% battery the LED will illuminate red when you attempt to turn the device on, but I was repeatedly able to bring it to the boot screen. Charged it up and it lost 40% idling overnight. Bringing it back up to 100% right now, I'll see how this goes.......

My Pixel XL is coming in the mail soon. Was on the phone for over an hour with the rep because they had a siren go off in the background.

I'm not sure if the representative on the phone didn't know anything about the phone's issues or they're just playing along. They put you on hold to "ask" upper management to see what steps could be taken next to "fix" your phone.

Expresso 09-19-2017 11:05 AM

Did you guys get new or refurb Pixel units?

Anyone having WiFi problems with Oreo? Can't seem to stay on my home WiFi network since upgrading to Oreo. Constantly disconnects/reconnects every few minutes, drains battery 20% overnight.

Already tried resetting router, forgetting network and turning off data.

Did you check wifi preferences to make sure "keep wifi on during sleep" is on?

Yes, "Keep WiFi on during sleep" is on

There was an update for Google Connectivity Services yesterday, this helped

So after about a year and half of owning my 5X...

My phone finally succumbed to the dreaded boot-loop... phone froze up for a couple mins then boot looped after 45min or so it was back on the welcome screen used shortly then back to the loop.

Has anyone had any luck in fixing it or having support from LG or their provider?
