Drones !!!

Who here got a drone? I picked up a DJI phantom 4 over the weekend for a decent price. Quite fun to use but I really need to get used the remote so the movements won't be as jerky and mechanical. Lots of neat functions on the Phantom and I especially love the Activetrak feature. Will definitely be using that for some car footage. I noticed that the range isn't that far and I keep loosing remote connection but maybe because I only used it in a neighborhood so far.. probably lots of wifi interference.

Share your drone footages and experiences!

Edit:
Sharing a different video for you guys. I still need to work on my editing.

Here is a video that my friend edited. We both got drones and we combined our footages together.

i've been wanting a drone quite badly for some time now. just cant get over how expensive they are though..

G 07-04-2016 01:11 PM

How much did you pick up the DJII P4 for?

I've wanted to get one and play around with, especially when travelling, but I feel like a lot of cities ban them for safety reasons?

Looks nice though! Jealous !

gilly 07-04-2016 01:14 PM

I got it from some guy on craigslist. He claimed he got a few of them for sale. It was sealed in box. He also had lots of sealed extra batteries for sale. Called him the next day and bought 2 extra batteries.

$1750 for drone and $150/battery.

awesome video

european 07-04-2016 01:31 PM

neat

Euro7r 07-04-2016 03:09 PM

Damn that looks fun and cool to play with. But damn are they pricey :(

v_tec 07-04-2016 03:25 PM

Thought about this too. Restriction aside, I'm just not sure if it's really worth hauling the done + gear for an urban city holiday. Maybe if it was more of an Island / resort vacation?

twitchyzero 07-04-2016 05:40 PM

aerial cams are super fun...enjoy but more importantly fly safe! Always keep a solid distance and get comfortable flying without GPS in an open space. It's tempting but don't fly at night, you won't be able to see powerlines etc.

If this is your first one there's no doubt you'll be crashing it...just a matter of scratches or total loss heh

I recently lugged mine around abroad...they're banned in all 23 of Tokyo wards and a good chunk of Seoul

Canada is still lax but new laws are expected this year. US requires FAA registration.

Man you made it so easy to find your house! google street view shows a different vehicle in your driveway....

I've been thinking about a drone for a bit. But not really into video/editing video. I'm gonna wait till they have easy to use/high quality still cameras

tomatogunk 07-04-2016 07:53 PM

Great song choice!!

tiger_handheld 07-04-2016 08:30 PM

So how about drone test pilot meet at your house? You can even throw a bbq for us? Can bring some food?

What you say?
No need for address, already know where you live. So Saturday ok? Around 2?

on topic:
how long can it stay in the air and what do you do if you lose the remote signal? Does it have some sort of "fly home" feature?

evlee 07-04-2016 09:13 PM

your neigborhood streets looks like an urban race track.

gilly 07-04-2016 09:53 PM

Thx for the compliments about the video guys but I am gonna take it down for safety reasons. I forgot about RS's amazing ability to track people down lol.

I will post up another video soon.

The Phantom 4 improved its battery life to about 25 minutes of fly time. It also has a new speed feature which can travel speeds up to 72km/hr but that would also drain the battery life faster. It takes about an hour and half to fully charge a battery though.

If you loose signal with your drone, it has a "fly home" feature where it will fly straight up to a desired height that you set in your settings and automatically fly back to the exact spot the drone took off from the ground. It uses GPS satellites from the moment you turn on your drone.

The phantom 4 will also calculate your current distance and battery percentage and will give you a warning telling you to "fly home" now if you want your drone to make it back "home" before your battery dies.

Edited original post with different videos. lol

unit 07-14-2016 11:30 AM

i want one but sort of afraid i'll crash it. do you think flying small cheaper drones would help to become a better pilot for the phantom?

Manic! 07-14-2016 11:47 AM

Have a customer who is retired. He bought a bebop drone for around $1000. Tries to show it off to a neighbor and crashes into a tree. Few hundred in replacement parts to fix it. Then gets it struck in a tree. Tries to use a ladder to get it and falls off the ladder breaking his leg. Next he tires to film a friend fishing on a lake. Drone ends up at the bottom of the lake. Buys a replacement drone. Morel of the story start with a cheap drone and practice, practice, practice, in a open field.

Euro7r 09-28-2016 12:34 PM

Wow. Amazed at this drone technology. So tempted to buy one. $1K USD though :(

Manic! 09-28-2016 02:37 PM

Go Pro what?

Does not have a built in screen but looks like it does everything better than the Go Pro Karma.

Edit: here is a good comparison: http://petapixel.com/2016/09/28/dji-...s-specs-stack/

77civic1200 09-28-2016 07:20 PM

^that comparison omits important facts like the removable camera and/or gimbal of the go-pro unit. I could take the go-pro camera scuba diving if I wanted, and take the gimbal mountain biking or snowboarding. Those are two huge features that they seem to dismiss
You aren't just buying a drone, you are getting 3 tools in 1. They are only comparing the drone side of it, of course the DJI is better, thats all it does. I'd still wait to see the video qualities though, I have a feeling the go-pro might win that one

Peturbo 09-28-2016 09:55 PM

just placed a preorder for the DJI mavic. been hesitant about ordering a drone the past few months but this drone just checks the boxes for everything I wanted.
If you preorder from bestbuy.ca, you get 10% off at the moment.

6793026 09-28-2016 10:20 PM

go pro scuba diving is shit. you need constant white balance to have good results for diving.

twitchyzero 09-28-2016 10:47 PM

ive done a lot of research on both...DJI wins buy a mile.

DigitalRev already posted real-world 26min flight. Karma is like 30% heavier rated up to 20min..so probably around 15min. The Mavic Pro footage in non-promos so far is also better.

GoPro is not ideal for 4K aerial unless you want to drop another $250 on a flat lens. I've been flying with one for over a year now.

i'd like to see how long a gimbal for snowboarding/mountain biking will last
i went traveling with supposedly the best built gopro gimbal and even that died 2 weeks into my trip. Current day gimbals are too fragile for rugged sports.

Edit: DJI has been building flying cams for 10 years now. This is GoPro's first time building one and a gimbal. Keep that in mind.

TOS'd 09-28-2016 10:56 PM

Wow the Mavic Pro looks pretty cool.
