The following is taken from the Transport Canada Website.

Question: How many jerricans of gasoline may I transport in my private vehicle?
Answer: There is an exemption titled "150 kg Gross Mass Exemption" that allows you to transport a gross mass of up to 150 kg of gasoline. When using this exemption, the weight of the means of containment and the gasoline may NOT exceed 30 kg. A typical 25 L jerrican of gasoline would most likely weigh less than that. If each jerrican weighed 25 kg, then you could transport up to 6 jerricans (i.e., 25 kg x 6 = 150 kg).

The "Limited Quantities Exemption" (Section 1.17) may allow you to transport more than 150 kg without having to comply with the entire TDG Regulations. For more details, please see the following question: What is a "limited quantity" and how does this exemption work (Section 1.17)?

For a more detailed explanation of this exemption, please consult the FAQ titled:
How does the 150 kg gross mass exemption (Section 1.15) work?

Yes I do know that but I feel it’s good information to know what is considered to be the max limit one can privately transport in a private vehicle.

Technically, anything more than the normal capacity of the vehicle is subject to duty.

Prices are holding at $1.06-1.10/L for regular up here. One new station is at $1.24/L but its been like that for three days now. Not missing the BC cost of living at all, I remember filling up with Premium in the /M car in DT Vancouver two summers ago. Paid $1.61/L, that really hurt.

Sure do miss the mountains though.

I don't remember who the source was but since you reside in Richmond they might not let you carry it over as you cant transport explosive materials through Massey tunnel, unless you were to say go all the way around.

Really?
When was the last time you went into a CBSA office?
I do it weekly, and I assure you that regardless of their marketing, their job is to collect taxes first and foremost.

I am not disagreeing with you, Hypa, but I'd also have to say they are far less hell-bent on collecting taxes compared to before.

just did the math to double check.

current price in bellingham is $2.59/gal. at roughly a 1.27 conversion to USD that puts gas at roughly $0.87/liter

Insane... It's only an hour away, and the gas is 40% cheaper than what we pay...

Have they backed off at the border?
I'm glad to hear that. I deal with CBSA on a corporate level, and it's all about dem taxes. I've noticed that anything coming in via the mail system from Amazon, etc, are being hit with the highest level of duty and taxes over the last year. I used to get away with minimal charges. But it seems like they're figuring out that they're leaving a viable income stream completely untapped.

I don't like paying taxes.

In the last 3 months I was in the states 6 times buying hundreds of dollars worth of stuff and gas and was never charged any duty.

You are incorrect about that, their job is to stop criminals and the import of certain goods and people into Canada. They also enforce taxes on goods brought into Canada in which the correct tax hasn't been paid on.

Trust me on this the wife is a CBSA officer

^ I don't get why there isn't as big of a jump from regular to premium in the states

Even if you factor in lower prices equal lower percentage markup but the percentage is still less than ours

That's why I said, technically. He asked what the rules are and that's what it is. Generally, a couple is fine.

People have been charged duty on a single Jerry can of fuel.

You can say that exact thing about men CBSA officers. I guess with men there are more shades of grey?

Everything from douchebags and cocksuckers to cool and friendly.

Most of the female CBSA officers I've encountered have been nice to me. In fact, I cannot remember one that was unreasonable or had something up their ass. Must be my calming personality/charm and trusting face.

As for border guards being different between the countries, I find the US border guards are more on edge than our guys and gals. Their (or there, depending on who's reading this) border guards are in the normal to asshole range 95% of the time.
