Do you blame him? At this point he may as well strap on the pads.

#1 defenseman and #1 goaltender for the Canucks

Gillis on 1040 right now. Tuned in late myself.. might have to check the podcasts to see what I missed. Think he’s on air until 6PM

Ch28 10-10-2018 07:44 PM

GMMG's interview on Team 1040 today was lit af

https://www.tsn.ca/radio/vancouver-1...saga-1.1189506

- all but onfirmed AQ hired Torts
- Weber being traded to Van was discussed to the point where he had a meeting with him at his home in Kelowna
- wanted to rebuild after 2012 by trading assets until "things intervened"

This was a fantastic listen to get into the mind of the most successful GM we've had.

wreck 10-10-2018 08:41 PM

articulate, precise, pragmatic, well thought out, recognizes his mistakes.

what a difference from the current incompetence we've been cursed with.

at least the casuals are happy.

6thGear. 10-10-2018 09:17 PM

Ive always liked GMMG. Too bad he couldn't continue in hockey.

Didn't listen to the interview but based on your summary, I'm not surprised, as everyone else shouldn't be lol

He easily could have gotten a gig somewhere else. He probably didn't want to deal with another dick of an owner like Aquaman.

murd0c 10-10-2018 10:37 PM

its funny how when he said Torts didn't work that basically got him fired. The interview shows how much of a tool AQ actually is as an owner. I really liked when he said the biggest mistake he made was not changing the scouting staff which we have been saying for years.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's the new GM for the Seattle team, I'm calling it right now!!

he didn't say yes or no if he has any contact with the group in Seattle, however he made it absolutely clear he loves the Pacific North West.

This called called Aquaman "Aqualooney" and I love it.

There was a definite shift in drafting patterns with MG near the end, but it was too late by then as he admitted.

Of note, Benning and Linden both heavily criticized Gillis’ unorthodox approaches when they initially took over and have since introduced similar policies (most recent being the video game ban on the road; MG & co’s human performance plan wouldn’t allow players to go for beers after a game, for example).

Some said he was blacklisted from hockey because of the way he handled negotiations and how he wasn't part of the old boys club (didn't work his way up and took over from agent side to GM side)

He's actually a professor at UVic teaching law, so it's not like he's hurting for money. He said at the end of the interview that he knows Seattle will be looking for a GM and he'd be interested if they were to pursue him.

I think the only real thing that was surprising was the bit about Shea Weber. You don't visit a player at their home unless trade talks were progressing really well. It sucks, because he said how Shea really liked the things and pieces the Canucks (at that time) had in place. They had great dialogue and the pieces in place to potentially make a trade for his rights, but only lost out after Weber got that massive deal from Nashville. Imagine a Canucks blue line with an actual #1 defenseman. I think we'd be singing a different tune if that was the case.

Hondaracer 10-11-2018 11:14 AM

god if MG goes to seattle and wins a cup before Vancouver i'll shoot myself..

RiceIntegraRS 10-11-2018 11:16 AM

^pretty sure Flyers gave him that contract and Nashville had to match it.

Anyways I always loved GMMG, his resume speaks for itself and there ain't no other Canuck GM in history that has the same achievements as he has. How he and Gilman worked around the cap was astounding. There were some bad moves he made, not signing Ehrhoff, letting Torres walk, not getting enough for Hodgson. But anyways if he was still with the team, we would never would.of spent almost 8mil on Roussel, Beagle, n Schaller. Would be saving that money to try and land a big fish like Bobrovski next year

68style 10-11-2018 11:22 AM

In a perfect world, GMMG would be our GM and Benning would be the Asst GM and in charge of scouting...

Mike Oxbig 10-11-2018 11:52 AM

We couldve got dennis siedenberg from Florida too if we did, we probably wouldve won

Also a replacement of Victor Oreskovich

bobbinka 10-11-2018 12:21 PM

Except everybody back then had their pitchforks out, ready to burn GMMG

That's cuz nobody knew who to blame except him for the Luongo and Hamhuis bullshit and Tortorella being an asshat (not even talking about his record, how he lived in the USA the entire time and didn't attend or run practices)... after the fact it came to light that Aquaman fucked everything up.

I always respected how he came in and did all the little things that he knew players wanted to come to a market that was otherwise unattractive... putting in luxury features and making safety changes to the boards/glass at Rogers... he made this place one that players wanted to come to.

Hondaracer 10-11-2018 01:18 PM

i never doubted GMMG

GMMG = GM
Gilman = Assistant GM aka 'capologist'
Benning = Assistant to the Assistant GM
Judd Bracket = Director of Amateur Scouting

Bracket is a stud in terms of viewing prospect so I don't think I'd give him up for GMJB
