What's your primary use? If it's in the living room where there's lots of bright natural light during the day OLED might not be your best choice as they don't get as bright as LCDs.

For the price the Sony X900 is one of the best bang for your buck TVs, and Sonys processing and motion handling is the best in the business.

Bingo, it'll be for the living room and it does get quite a lot of natural light. Maybe I'll check out the SONY as I've seen so many people talk about the X900.

Just doing a quick search at all the major retails it looks like the X900E is about $2300 while the newer X900F model is $2700. Is there a good reason other than it's newer to pay the extra $400?

The X900F has X1 Extreme Processor that is in all Sonys flagship TVs, and it supports Dolby Vision as well. From what I've read there isn't a huge difference between the two in terms of picture quality, they are very similar. Probably not worth the extra $400 if you're on a budget.

On a similar note, is Monoprice still the best place to get HDMI cables? I see they've got ratings for 1080@60, 4k@60, etc but I have no clue what YUV 4:2:0 means.

I purchased a few cables from https://www.primecables.ca/ and they've been great. HQ is based in Montreal but they have a distribution centre here in Vancouver, so orders generally arrive quicker than Monoprice.

They're also doing free shipping on orders of $29 or more for the rest of this month.

Yup, bought stuff from Prime Cables before, and they've been awesome.

It's basically the number of chroma subsampling bits/colour channels. To support proper 4K HDR, you want 4:4:2 or 4:4:4 in a cable.

Thanks guys, I ended up ordering some cables from Prime. The shipping from Monoprice was absurd, they wanted more than the cables cost.

I was TV shopping this week, and I remembered this thread. You wouldn't believe how much more expensive TV's are in HK compared to USA (and I assume Canada). Also we don't have those budget brands with decent TV's like Vizio and TCL (there are some TCL but only shitty models)

I could have bought a huge cheap TV, but quality is pretty important for me, so I went with 55". My choice ended up being between the Sony X900F 49" and Samsung NU8000 55". I went with the Samsung because it allowed me to get a bigger TV for a bit cheaper, and it looks to be good for gaming. I do kind of wish I could have gone for the full backlit panel, but 49" is pushing it (I sit about 8 feet away from the TV)

It ended up being about $10K HKD with delivery, etc. It's $7800 HKD at Bestbuy.ca right now. This is at one of those little cheap stores listed at price.com.hk, not full retail (Broadway and Fortress sell it for HK$13,480.00, almost TWICE THE PRICE as Bestbuy Canada!) No tax of course

Though it did come with some useful gifts (soundbar, Samsung 8" tablet, and $500 worth of grocery coupons which is as good as a cash rebate)

and wouldn't surprise me if they were mostly built next door in SZ
brand name electronics/computer hardware are typically fair bit cheaper in North America
why is that? a much smaller markets in HK/Taiwan because the average person buys a low-end TCL?

Actually the Sony X900F is made in Japan.. The NU8000 is made in Mexico, but I'm not sure if that's just for the NA variants (I'll find out tomorrow!). The panels should be from Korea though

But yeah most people just buy the biggest TV they can fit into their room, at the lowest price possible. Seeing two of my friends' 55" and 65" 4K TV's, and having a cheap Samsung 55" at my last AirBNB are exactly what convinced me that I need to spend quite a bit more to get something good.

If I were to get a 4K console it would be the Xbox One X. It's WAY more powerful than the PS4 Pro. By quite a bit. Also it supports FreeSync, which makes a HUGE difference in the smoothness of games

However the games... God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spiderman... The actual games that make use of the graphics are on the lesser system

TV arrives in an hour or so.. Looking forward to checking it out! I've had the same TV for 12 years... It was good for its time, but 32" is waaaaaaaaay too small... It always was, but I went for a good 32" over a shitty 42" (the biggest midrange TVs at the time)

Then I have to go to a funeral for the rest of the day

Agreed. I've been a huge Xbox fan over Sony but the PS4 exclusives is what does it for me. Trying to score the spiderman exclusive PS4 pro in time for Red dead redemption 2 :Nyan:

Oh man the first episode of Ozark really puts a TV's HDR capabilities to the test... and my TV barely passes. Sort of wishing I had been able to buy a full panel lit TV like the Samsung QLED or Sony X900F... Unfortunately TV's are so damn expensive here, the 55" models were out of my price range. And I am already pushing the size limit at 55" and didn't want to go down to 49"

Still really happy with it, but extremely dark scenes just drive its local dimming function nuts. And you can't turn it off, only set it to low.

Samsung 55" Q6F in US: $1100 regular price at bestbuy. $1634 USD best price I could find

Sony X900F in US: $1300. $2151 best price! More than 65% price increase! Extra for that Sony tag I guess

I paid $1200 for my TV, which basically means I could have bought one of those instead. It's like $900 at BestBuy

K I'm done. Going to bed to cry myself to sleep now

Yea sucks that the prices are so high because you really want that full OLED..the difference is a gigantic step even over full array LED imo.

I work as a technician and have probably seen 700+ TV setups in my last 2 years. I bought an Sony XBR55X850B in December of 2015, I’ve had it professionally calibirited and imo it’s in the top 5 of those 700 Tv setups I’ve seen. It’s an edge lit LED however I won the “panel lottery” when I bought mine and got an excellent panel and still to this day it impressed me.

The Tv’s I’ve seen ahead of it are all OLED, mostly LG but then I came across this set:

This is the 65” $4500 Sony A9.Sonys top model OLED This is arguabley the best Tv on the market currently. The customer who had it couldn’t even remember the model so he pulled out the invoice.

This Tv was unfuckingbelivable. It was like you could reach into it.

Im aiming for the 49" X900F but hear the gaming input lag is not as good compared to some in the same class/price range.

perhaps the X900E if it magically pops up again.

can someone recommend me anything thats similar in specs/price range?

The new Vizio P55 is looking pretty good, $999 at Costco right now for a 55". Low input lag, full backlit LED array, local dimming, HDR, all the good stuff.

I turn on my TV less than 30 times over the course of one year. Should use it more since I even got a nice soundbar and sub to go with it but I am just lazy...... and I am so use to using my computer while playing something in the background......

One of the reasons I chose mine is because of the excellent gaming support it seems to have. Even though I don't have a PS4 or XBOX It's more planning for the future

Check out this list maybe, the site is actually quite good. One of the few good review sites that still exist.

Yeah man OLEDS have such nice contrast. But they too are out of my price range. Maybe I'll have to upgrade more often from now on, as better things come down in price

Really though, IMO HDR was the first major reason to upgrade since 1080p. 4K is good, but only if you have a huge TV really close up, and those have been pretty expensive until now. Now the next step is OLED.
