I think there are two categories, and one minor niche when it comes to TV shopping in HK: Those that care about size, those that care about brand, and those that actually care about quality. The first is taken care of the cheap sets (my friend got his 55" China Brand TV for free with his internet subscription. That's how little they care.)
But if you're in the last two categories, you're in a much smaller group. Less demand = higher prices. Also probably most people in the last category are rich (there are way too many rich bankers here), so it just drives the prices up. The rest of us get fucked
That's my guess anyway. Almost everything is reasonably priced here, and quite often cheaper, but when it comes to electronics and computer stuff it's expensive compared to the US.

I always though HK would have cheaper price since there are a few Chinese brands and they seem pretty decent.

If there are decent Chinese brands, I haven't come across them
There are big, cheap ones with decent panels in them, but you lose everything else.

I work as a technician and have probably seen 700+ TV setups in my last 2 years. I bought an Sony XBR55X850B in December of 2015, I’ve had it professionally calibirited and imo it’s in the top 5 of those 700 Tv setups I’ve seen. It’s an edge lit LED however I won the “panel lottery” when I bought mine and got an excellent panel and still to this day it impressed me.
The Tv’s I’ve seen ahead of it are all OLED, mostly LG but then I came across this set:
This is the 65” $4500 Sony A9.Sonys top model OLED This is arguabley the best Tv on the market currently. The customer who had it couldn’t even remember the model so he pulled out the invoice.
This Tv was unfuckingbelivable. It was like you could reach into it. | Isn't that TV like 6 grand for the 65"? I can't tell if you meant the A8F, or the newer A9 Master Series I didn't even think they were available yet.
I love Sony but if they think their TV is worth $2500 more than an LG OLED they are out of their fucking minds, it's the same panel.
Sure their processing is better but the price difference is insane.

Sorry on further inspection it may be the A8
Personally I don’t care for LG as a brand in general so I’d have a hard time buying one of their TV’s. However, I truly believe Sony’s processors are far and above their competition for most of their products. I don’t have anything but anectodal evidence but ever computer, TV, receiver etc I’ve used from Sony has always seemed to perform above its ability and maintain its longevity far beyond the comparable products.

I wouldn't buy a regular LG tv but when it comes to OLED I feel they are all so close that whatever is cheaper is good enough. Sony is taking a lot of heat because they basically crippled their A1E OLED set with a firmware update, so now when you watch anything with static content on the screen (sports, videogames) the whole screen dims significantly to prevent burn in.
I love Sony TVs but come black Friday I'll be getting whichever OLED is cheaper, which will be LG by at least $1000.

Just got a new TV and initially I was gonna get a Sony but decided to go the OLED route and went LG. Got the 65" C8 for $3300 and so far I'm fairly pleased. This was literally the first LG product I've ever bought

Also, really only the kid has utilized it so far with cartoons so I haven't been able to really sit down and enjoy it yet.

I've been reading that thread on RFD, seems like all the best deals are back East. I'd jump on a C65 for $2800.
I personally wouldn't go for last year's model, they don't have the extra burn in protection features that the C8 offers such as the ability to dim just the static images on the screen which is helpful when watching sports or playing videogames with a static hub on the screen. Sonys great idea was to just dim the whole screen with no way to fix it.

Sounds like OLEDs aren't really worth the trouble if you do much more than TV and movies

It's really not that bad, but if you're the type to put the picture in vivid mode and watch CNN all day OLED probably isn't the best choice. Vary your content and it'll be alright.

At this point you gotta go as big as you can. High quality 4k panels are fine even up close. You’ll likely regret going smaller when it’s done

I sit about 8 feet away from my TV, and 55" would be the minimum for movies, Amazon Prime, and Netflix. (btw Jeremy Clarkson's teeth in 4K hdr = )
I tried to convince myself to go for a full array lit 49" (which would still cost more!), but I think I am glad I went with the cheaper 55" edge lit. I think. Sometimes I regret it when watching HDR content in a blacked out room, but otherwise yeah... Most of the time, bigger = better, as long as you're not sacrificing TOO much.
I sacrificed good local dimming. What would you sacrifice going with a bigger model? If it's just money, and you can afford it, just do it.

As cool at that sounds, after seeing the HD SSE I'm struggling to see what the added benefit of doing it again in UHD is supposed to be. Seeing it as it was in theatres is neat but adding more pixels to a grainy and blurry source seems unlikely to make it any better.

This is a fan made direct-from-film transfer. It's the same source film, scanned at 4K.

I know what it is, my point is what's the improvement really going to be in scanning it at UHD over HD when the source is still a grainy film with over 40 years of degradation on top?

The last time the original film was transferred to home video was in 1993 at 480p (actually less since it's non-anamorphic, so really 360p). You can go ahead and let your TV take that 360p image and stretch out the pixels to fill your 2160p TV, but that will look really bad.
For Star Wars fans who want to watch the movies as they were originally released, we've had to count on fan creations since then. And home cinema has only become more capable since then. Before this, we had the 720p "DeSpecialized" editions. Those weren't the greatest though, since they were based on various home cinema transfers.. parts of it were from the DVD, some from the Laserdisc, some from VHS even, IIRC.
Now we have this original film transfer - available both with and without Digital Noise Reduction (to help get rid of the grain you were talking about).
For Star Wars fans and 4K fans, this is a huge thing. If you don't care about Star Wars and the Special Edition bullshit, I wouldn't expect you to care about this release. But don't dismiss it automatically. It's a pretty big thing for some people. |

It’s similar to Terminator 2 on Netflix right now in 4k
They use he original cut to create the 4k version, the quality is so good it looks like it was filmed last week

They took an original theatrical reel from the 70's and scanned it all at 1080p and called it the Silver Screen Edition (SSE), which is what I've been referring to and apparently you haven't heard of. Now they've done the same thing again but at 2160p. I know about Harmy's despecialized, I've seen the special edition crap, but after seeing the original SSE and knowing the poor quality of the theatrical reels it comes from I'm struggling to see why scanning the same low quality source at an even higher res is going to make it look any better.
