Hmmm ... a bit too much, a bit too long. i see a buyout in the future. I see a Phaneuf type of buyout in year 6 or 7. Karlsson re-signing with Sharks on eight-year deal.
According to TSN Hockey Insiders Pierre LeBrun and Bob McKenzie, the San Jose Sharks have reached an eight-year contract with the defenceman which will be worth roughly $11.5 million per season - making him the league's third-highest paid player.

Hmm I think for EK65, that's worth it. I would consider him another level type of player compared to Phaneuf. IMO Phaneuf had potential early on in his career but he was never able to live up to the hype he had when he was in juniors. They also play a different kind of game.

there was talk on the radio about the canucks and edler. they still haven't reached an agreement which would suggest there's something both parties aren't willing to compromise on. edler obviously wants to stay and the canucks do want him in this organization. the best guess here is that canucks want don't want to offer protection from the expansion draft for edler. as an organization, it's logical to deny such protection for a player that is well into his final years (despite our emotional attachment).
it wouldn't be surprising to see 2-3 new defensemen for next season.

People act like Gardiner and Myers aren’t going to want NMCs for the expansion draft.
Edler wants 3 x $6M with an NMC. I’ll take that all day every day over Gardiner or Myers at 6 x $6M with an NMC (at least for the first couple of seasons).
Benning hands out these garbage contracts to garbage players like Sbisa, Gudbranson, Eriksson, Beagle, Sutter, etc. with next to no negotiation then plays hardball with actual good core players already on the team like Horvat, Tanev, Boeser, and Edler. It’s fucking ridiculous

I would not consider either of those dmen for 6-7 million... forget it...
The only thing Myers is consistent at is being totally inconsistent, he also plays like he's 5'7" not 6'7"
Karlsson isn't worth $11.5 either, he is so overhyped... what teams has he helped win anything in his career? Puts up points in the regular season... and then gets a leg injury every playoffs... there was an interesting article on the Athletic discussing what Marner's contract as well as what a contract for Binnington would look like with a lack of comparables (Matt Murray being the closest one) and doing an analysis on their WAR and value added to the team and the numbers were quite insightful into what a player is actually "worth" and also factored in their age and what their RFA eligibility was in relation to that, etc.
Long story short, teams overpaying for guys who just do not have the same amount of impact that their salary dollars are suggesting they do are going to be in a lot of trouble in the future. This all started with Dumbass in Toronto being quoted saying it was "okay" to overpay Nylander about a mill a season... it's gonna come back to bite him huge down the road nevermind the fact the Leafs had absolutely zero actual need for him as a player with their forward group.
