it's a heck of a lot of judgment on a guy who hasn't played a single minute for us yet lol. But I guess that's all we can do with our summer until hockey season starts..

I don’t think either of those apply (before here / afterwards) for Gudbranson, he was just like Myers as in he was touted to be a big guy that’s tough to play against and can use his size with a good hard shot... zero of those things were actually true from Gudbranson except the size part and I suspect / fear the same will be said of Myers.

Myers defensive analytics aren't very good either, but he does bring other things to the table like offense.

Myers is like the polar opposite of Gudbranson in terms of style of play.

If anyone who thinks Myers is gonna be this guy thats hard to play against is gonna be seriously disapointed. The knock on him is that he doesnt use his size like he should. But in the end hes a pretty skinny dude. 6'8" 229lbs? for comparison Tryamkin is 6'7" 265lbs.
Anyways im excited for the season. I think we did improve in all areas. Offence since Petey will only improve, Boeser will have a full training camp so he will improve among others. Defence dramatically got better over last season, not cause of Myers cause we have Hughes Full time now. Hughes,Myers,Benn > Pouliot,Gudbranson,Hutton. Gotta also factor in that alot of the teams in our division got worse in the off season not better. I think we have a good chance to make the playoffs if we stay healthy

Benning: "I just felt like it’s a great fit for our group. . . because he can play today’s style of game because of his skating. And he’s six-foot-eight. He makes us a better team."
Benning again: "He gets up and down the ice with ease, has incredible size and reach (6-foot-8, 229 pounds), but most importantly he's a character player and role model that our younger players can emulate."
They may not play the same style at all, but the expectations of using size to separate opponents from the puck/break up plays are identical and an expectation of jumping in from an offensive standpoint too. Obviously Myers is going to produce more points than Gudbranson without even trying, but they are both completely incompetent in regards to spacing/predicting plays on defence in their own zone and no amount of "size" can ever make up for that.
Look what was said after Gudbranson was traded and upon his re-signing:
"He can move the puck, and he kind of came into his own this year in Florida," Benning said. "… He gives us size (6-foot-5, 216 pounds) and strength, he can make a good first pass, he has real hard shot, he can hammer it from the back end, and he's a high-character person."
"Erik is an important part of our team and provides a physical element to our blueline," said Benning. "His leadership qualities help us as we continue to integrate younger players in our lineup. He is a quality person, a great teammate, outstanding in the community and we are excited to have him as part of our team moving forward."
Unless Benning is using copy & paste for his dman signing quotations, could swap either name in there back and forth.
As an aside, Benning's comment about Gudbranson making a good first pass are super super funny in retrospect considering he iced the puck most of the time and constantly missed forwards with breakout passes hahaha

There's no doubt that Myers will provide an improvement on the blue line, but only for scoring. Another D-man that can jack up 30+ points and create offensive plays? Awesome.
Defensively, however, he's not great. Statistically he made the Jets worse, and struggled to block shots and prevent slot entries-- this may be due to the fact that he played with Kulikov who is garbage, but we'll see when he's out here with us...
Hopefully his offensive strengths outweigh his defensive weaknesses and justifies the top 4 over-payment; I do welcome the additional firepower, and I hope he pans out when Hughes gets into the lineup!

From all these comments, it reminds me of how we brought in Ehrhoff. Now, don't get me wrong I'm not saying they're the same caliber player. Just remember that we took on Ehrhoff with the expectation of both added offense on the back end and disappointment in the defensive zone.
All the mistakes that were made by the pairing of Edler and Ehrhoff were somewhat overshadowed by their success offensively. You knew there was a good chance they'd score on the PP but also knew they'd probably fuck it up going the other way lol.
It'll all depends on who Myers plays with and if they can find balance/chemistry. Maybe Hughes? Maybe a solid defensive partner like Tanev? who knows..

A friend sent me this link earlier today pointing to Hughes: https://www.nucksmisconduct.com/2019...-silver-lining
Side note regarding RiceIntegras’ playoff comment, I sure hope so. The company I work for signed a 5 year contract for a box suite that expires after this season and I’m not sure we’ll renew. My boss hasn’t got to watch a playoff game from the suite yet. We’re hoping that changes this year!

If the Canucks rely on Myers to be the anchor then he's already set up for failure. If he can eat up minutes and take the load off Edler and Tanev to reduce possible injuries then the D core is in good shape.

I hate to be captain obvious but Myers isn’t the # 1 anchor we’ve been waiting so long for and his contract reflects that. IMO he’s a solid addition that’ll help spread the workload for sure.
If he can stay healthy I hope he proves the early naysayers wrong.
2 Calder trophy winners on the team now if that means anything

If you take out his rookie season he's roughly a 30 point player. His ppg last year was pretty much the same as biega's.

30 points would be great from Myers if he is able to deliver that on a consistent basis. A full season of Myers and Hughes is really going to improve scoring from the blueline. We have been one of the worst teams in recent years in that regard.

I'm not expecting a lot of offense, but that's all Myers has going for him. Any additional offense will be a breath of fresh air, but at an overpayment.
