I am seriously disappointed even though I should really have expected this. This is essentially the same first gen car with a new engine dropped into it, plus some nips and tucks here and there. The engine is adequate, and I'd expect it to work quite nicely for street use, but a larger displacement will almost certainly make it less eager to rev and revs are fun. Except for the front end from above the grill all the way to the hood, the rest of the lines look overwrought.

I'd call this a gen 1.5 car at most...

The other problem is -- this car is going to have to compete with all the 1st gen cars that are already out in the market. I don't see how the car wouldn't be Cdn $30k+ when it drives out of the showroom, but you can probably find a decent FRS in the low teens. But the new car isn't $18k better than the old one, so why would someone buy new?

Because they can't afford the old one either, but this way they can get that sweet, sweet 84 month loan.

The 400z is estimated to be in the $45K range. How does that even make it comparable to the BRZ? It's no longer in the same market segment anymore.

Don’t jump in too early maybe they’ll do an STI model with the turbo motor!!

I mean, you wouldn’t want to be “that” guy who bought the Scion iM right before the new Corolla hatchback came out right?

I totally hope Subie will bolt the turbo back on in an STI version of the car, and I think it'd totally make sense for them to do it too. Then again, their Toyota overlords may not like the idea of a BRZ STI eating into the sales of the 4-banger Supra.

Personally, I think the two cater to different audience since a BRZ STI would obviously be 6MT only, while the 4 banger Supra is auto only. But who knows what Toyota would think...

Not surprised, but I guess anything under 3000 lbs is considered lightweight in today's time..

I don't think it's an issue, they sold Supra, MR2 and GT-Four at the same time. They're totally different cars for different people.

That was many years ago. Japanese ports cars are dying today because no one is really buying them anymore. If sports cars were selling like hot cakes and was a money maker, everyone would be pumping them out. Cost of living is high, big move to SUV/Cross overs, Hybrids etc.

Making two is bonkers in today's climate when a regular Carmy in your lineup with make you 10000X more money. There is reason why the STI/Z has stayed the same for so many years. They don't make money and cost a shit load to redesign when your investors are looking for return on their money.

I’d say because Japan used to be the leader in affordable innovation. Just look at the modern sports cars the blue collar enthusiast can get. Lots of choices in hot hatches from Ford/vw/Hyunda, great driving muscle cars like the mustang/camaro/corvette, the European ///M or AMG (used of course) are supercar fast.

Mazda has the miata. Nissan has a 370z based on a 350z from 2002. Toyota has a bmw made “supra”. Honda has the CTR (which is great) but no s2000 replacement. You have some Lexus which are only softer GT cars in automatic. Infiniti does have the q60 which is a pretty sick car.

For the current 2020 model, exactly what does japan provide us that Europe or America can’t match (and the latter, at quite a cost saving)

A strong residual and resale value, and long term reliability.

Sports cars never were money makers, they're to get you into the dealership to sell you a Camry. Japanese sports cars already died once with the Miata as the sole survivor. All the cars you see now are either new or were killed off at one point. This is a comeback of sorts. Build excitement for the brand, sell more Camry's

From what I've read Lotus is going electric, but not hybrid.

I think they have a new version of the elise/exige coming out in a couple years, and then electric after that.

I think sports cars are money makers, just not Japanese ones. Look how many Mustangs/Challengers/Chargers/Camaros/Corvettes the Americans move each year. They sold like 100k Mustangs last year. The FRS sold like 10k in it's best year since release.

American sports cars print money. Not sure when/why the shift happened, but here we are.
