^And next week. |
|
Yea the humidity is fucked I don’t remember ever being like this Lately my AC unit is filling up 3/4 of a Home Depot bucket in ONE night wtf.. |
Conditions right now: Temperature: 18.1°C Dew point:17.8°C Humidity: 98% Went for a short walk in t-shirt and shorts just now and I'm sweatin' like Donny at Mar-a-lago with the FBI. It's only 18 degrees out!! |
How does this humidity thing work? I agree that it feels so hot & humid here in Vancouver, but what about somewhere like Singapore? I remember stepping off the plane and immediately getting hit by the oppressive heat... |
I went down the weather rabbit hole last week when we had that heat wave with humidity. Basically humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air. So a humidity of 98% means the air is full of water and sticky sweaty for humans because our sweat doesn't evaporate as fast. The Dew Point is the temperature at which the water vapor will start to condense and form clouds/rain. Right now we have such a high dew point relative to the temperature, even though it's "cool" it feels sticky AF. A place like Singapore the temperature ranges from 25-35C and their dew point is even higher (20s and up) and it's humid as pretty much all the time Any meteorologists please correct me |
You’ve got it. The warmer the air, the more water vapour it can carry. The dew point is exactly what you stated. The temperature which, the current water vapour in the air will saturate and condense. Aka, Fog/Cloud/Rain. This is why you see vapour from your breath when it’s cold (your warm moist breathe, cools and hits it’s dew point causing “fog.”… or why your vehicle smokes on startup on a cold morning. The warm exhaust vapour from combustion is added to the cool air, condensing causing the same phenomenon. Humidity is just a percentage of the current airs ability to hold moisture. Air at 35 degrees can hold a ton of moisture vs. 0 degrees. That’s why it’s a slap in the face in Singapore, vs. A cool Vancouver winter day despite them both being 95% humidity. The moisture level is much different. When we hit 30’s in Vancouver. Humidity levels aren’t near 100%, where as they are in Asia. We will hit 100% humidity on cool days. That’s what your feeling. Let’s say at 10 degrees, 1 parcel of air can hold a litre of water. At 40 degrees, that same parcel can hold 6 litres. So at 100% humidity at both temperatures, one is holding a hell of a lot more vapour to slap you sideways. I made up the numbers but you get the idea. |
Does anyone know how much (ballpark figure) a heat pump unit would cost, plus install? Say for a 1500 sq ft 3 level townhouse? Am I looking at like $10K or $15K or $20K? I do see BC Hydro rebates of up to $7K |

Yikes ... $30K !! My townhouse is designed so that we can use current HVAC vents .. wonder if that would bring it down to $20K range. |
I'm going to be around 15K for mine (3-ton Mits Cold Climate rated) That includes removal of old furnace & oil tank, new HP and air handler install, sheetmetal for a few additional air outlets. (not including electrical which I'm doing myself) I should be good for 11K in rebates between the Canada Greener Homes and CleanBC grants. Work is getting started to remove old oil tank and furnace on Monday. |
I'm assuming that's $15K after rebates? 11K rebates is a lot! So whole project with labour would be in the $26K range? |

Canada Greener Homes Grant: $5000 Clean BC Rebate: $6000 Saanich Municipal top up: $350 CRD group purchase rebate: $500 Minus $500 for the Home Energy Assessment you have to do to be eligible for the greener homes grant. I'll basically be only out of pocket $4000 |

Spoiler! As a commercial pilot, sounds like you need to know about weather too! |
Also gotta remember about evaporative cooling! When it’s 35° and dry as hell, the air is ready to evaporate all the sweat off your body and that’s what cools us down. But if (like yesterday) it’s 98% humidity, the air is already totally saturated with moisture and it can’t evaporate the sweat off of you. So you just get swampy and sticky and disgusting |
hence the common saying "It's a dry heat!" |
That’s when gold bond powdering your balls is super nice. |

It’s gonna get hot this week. Looks like Thursday will hit 30. this new Danby air con is doing really well at keeping the house cool and dry. it’s pulling about 2L of water from the air every day as I got a drain hose attached. Glad I got it on sale and the wifi function is pretty sweet. Can pre-cool the house before coming home. |

i asked my inlaws too, and theirs hasnt produced any water. Im wondering why ours is generating this much water. |
