27 is gross inside the house. That Danby air con is working great at keeping our little shit shack cool.

blkgsr 05-16-2023 08:27 AM

i got the LG dual inverter unit last week. the biggest they had from HD.

it's been barely enough to keep my living room (western facing with big windows) cool in the evening.

biggest bonus is wifi connectivity so i can turn it on when I'm a couple hours out to start getting the temp down.

but with my pregnant wife working from home i'm sure she'll have it on all day as she works in that same room

we moved our old AC to the bedroom....it's cold going to bed now lol

Just leave it on blowing.

It's a lot cooler this morning, and the wind picked up. The weather report said we get reprieve today then it's back to high 20s tmr for the rest of the week.

Bought one of these window fans yesterday when a friend told me they were in stock:

https://www.homedepot.ca/product/ham...fan/1001094738

I've had a number of friends telling me that these work really well, and much to my surprise, it worked even better than I had imagined. When I set it up as an exhaust fan in the kitchen right after we made dinner, our kitchen cooled down much quicker than I had anticipated. Later in the evening when I set it up as an intake fan in my kid's bedroom, it brought it right down from 27ºC+ to just a hair under 25ºC pretty quickly too.

It's insane how they are almost all sold out now.

I've been looking for one of those for a long time. I find them extremely hard to find.

i picked up one of those woozoo (what ever they're called) from costco after someone in the costco thread recommended one.

just sort of helps move the hot/cool air around in the room to even it out once the AC is on.

the window fan looks like a good idea, can you turn them on their side for windows that slide? is the width adjustable for larger/taller windows?

GLOW 05-16-2023 12:28 PM

i have the bionaire version, and last couple of days it's had an impact of decreasing room temp by a couple degrees...i'm west facing and a stuffy room so it helps.

Teriyaki 05-16-2023 12:37 PM

West facing room here with crummy insulated windows.
The last few years I've just barely gotten by with the window fan blowing full-blast all day and night.

Caved and bought an inverter AC unit this year. The difference is absolutely night and day.
For anyone looking at AC's, look into the inverter ones. They're so much quieter and don't have that power-up like a coal-firing power plant noise of the old types. I WFH so not having to go into the office just for some AC is well-worth the price of admission.

My windows are all sideway sliding, and the Home Depot-bought window fan just sort of gets held into place by the window frame and the window. I had it oriented with the 2 fans being one on top of the other.

The short sides of the fan has this flimsy soft plastic thing that can be pulled out to extend the area that can be blocked off, but I never bothered with it cuz it looks kind of flimsy to me. Even then, the fan still worked really well in exhaust or intake mode.

Anyone know if the make shift vents are the only options for condos? Our windows open outwards and maximum 4 inches so the costco danby dual vent won't fit.

Been venting out of my balcony.

I have two of these, but we're realistically only using one. I can sell you one, but some caveats:

- it was used for a few years so there's a bit of dust on the inside. I took apart one to clean last year, and it's a PITA but not too difficult.
- One of the knobs for the fans broke off; everything still works, but you just need to adjust the speed with a pair of pliers (or engineer something better ie. 3d print, lol).

PM me if you're interested.

GLOW 05-16-2023 02:28 PM

do you leave the window fan in place all year round, or only during the hot months?

Presto 05-16-2023 02:45 PM

In my experience window fans worked well for temperatures under 30C. They are a good way of moving air around. I used to have 3 window fans set to exhaust in the living room and kitchen area. It pulled air from the cooler bedroom which just had an open screened window. It worked even better at my parents' house. There was a window fan in each bedroom on the 2nd floor which pulled cold air from the basement. That made the whole house a lot cooler.

Only during hot months. Generally we leave the windows/blinds closed during the day, then use the window fans to push hot air out one window and draw cool air from another one.

Try looking in your window frame to see if there is anything preventing the window from opening more.

My windows had a screw installed making the slide hit it and preventing it from opening wider. Removed that and my windows now almost swing 45 degrees.

hud 91gt 05-17-2023 02:36 PM

My little Costco danby has been on full tilt last week from 8:30am until 9pm at night.
Poor thing. Place is still “warm.”

Anyone put their AC away for the year?

jcmaz 09-20-2023 08:55 PM

It's still on until Thanksgiving. West facing condo with no cross drafts. I swear the place I'm at has poor building ventilation.

Almost had to switch to heat for my older one because he sleeps very warm. He likes it ~25-26C.

Badhobz 09-21-2023 05:04 AM

^WTF is he arab!?

GLOW 09-21-2023 07:45 AM

put my AC away a few weeks ago, took my window fan down as well but had to put it back up a week or 2 ago when temps got back up to 25/26 again... leaving it up until it consistently comes down hard with rain.
