Does everyone remember the Myers slander before OEL came on board? That's the effect that OEL has had on Myers. I'm all for trading Myers given his age & salary but the hard part will be finding another RHD to slot in. I am still hoping Poolman can take that spot and play the Luke Schenn role for OEL. Just stay at home and defend, and let OEL take on a more offensive role.
So what is the consensus on the OEL trade ? Was it good for the Canucks ... or a wash? Or, can't tell yet as OEL's contract lasts until kingdom come.
Coyotes easily won that trade, they just had 1 year of the plug players and received our first round pick which had an incredible season last year. Now we have OEL with a shitty contact and Garland which isn't bad but he's not worth the first round pick we gave up for him.

I'm probably in the minority but I'm going to give it one more year before I write off the OEL + Garland trade.
Garland admitted that he never felt comfortable this past year in his exit interview so I am hoping that improves this year. I believe he's a 60pt guy and that's a pretty good deal for his contract.
I want to see OEL with a luke schenn like stay at home D pair to really see what OEL brings to the table. 13M for your second D pair is absurd, but 8-9M is right in line with where a second D pair should be.
If they had accepted not wining last season…. Which happened anyway… we would be rid of all those salaries and in a great spot to build up with some signings and renewal for Miller etc… I love what Garland brings and I like OEL too but his cap hit and bulletproof NMC are an absolute albatross.

Well, we have Garland and OEL now so what's done by dimjim is done.
How much cap space would you throw at your 2nd line D pair?
I think 2nd pairing it's fair to say should be a combined $8M of cap space at most... ideally you want to be hitting a Cup run when your 1st pair is big ticket or 1 big ticket offensive guy and an anchor for him, 2nd pair is recently graduated from the minors/drafting/development with offensive capability or a guy who's still on ELC and 3rd pair is shutdown/heavy.
OEL is a competent 2nd pairing guy, but he's $8.5M all by himself, which is totally unfathomable with a $83.5M cap. A single 2nd pair Dman can't be taking up 10% of your salary... but here we are
Additionally damaging in my mind, OEL is using up the spot Rathbone should be in now... he's ruining Rathbone's development simply by existing on our team. Rathbone is a perfect 2nd pairing guy for us right now, but needs a heavier body to play alongside him.
^uhh...no OEL is not ruining Rathbone's development. Rathbone needs to make it hard for coaches and management to put him ahead of OEL on the depth chart.

So essentially we have ~$1M to find OEL a partner for the 2nd D, which is basically what I have been suggesting - a luke schenn like stay at home D to let OEL roam.
If we can find the right fit then OEL + X for $9.5M is as good as 2x $4.5M or 2x $5M guys...

If only it worked like that, no way they’re putting OEL on third pairing and him and Rathbone are not a good fit… Hughes and Rath together also not a good fit… Rath deserves to be on 2nd pair already based on last season in Abby but he’s boxed out by Canucks not being able to bury OEL on a 3rd pairing
I heard its because how bad he was out coached in the playoffs when they played TB... I think that's total BS and Burnette got the short end of the stick. He deserved to get the Interim tag taken off but I also get the Panthers have a small window and they do need a coach with more experience.
I agree ... just like players, it takes the experiences of losses in the playoffs to learn how to win. I mean look at Cooper of TB ... his President trophy team was ousted in round 1 a year after going to the finals. Then they won 2 in a row. At least Panthers lasted into 2nd round with Burnette's 1st year. Bad management not willing to stick with a growing coach with upside. Someone should scoop Burnette up, especially now because he will coach with a chip on his shoulder.
