No alcohol period... Since Qatar is 100% dry

68style 11-18-2022 02:35 PM

I thought the article I read stated that there were certain venues that are alcohol approved zones that would be carefully monitored... but no in-game stadium sales.

Qatar most certainly does not 100% ban alcohol. At a minimum, it is available at hotels, and IIRC, officially it was only meant for consumption by foreigners.

I have a friend who has been working in Qatar for a few years, and he was telling me that it was actually pretty easy for expats and locals alike to get alcohol. Of course, as a local, you'd need to "know people", and for him as an expat, I think he said they have to travel somewhere out of town to purchase the alcohol, and drinking in public places is definitely not allowed.

For the World Cup, my understanding from reading the news was that wine consumption is still allowed in VIP booths at the stadium during the games.

no.

Found out you can get any drink you want if you are willing to pay for a seat in a vip booth. Starts at $950 per seat. 22 grand if you want a booth.

Lol imagine sitting through any sporting event sober, never mind soccer.

What should I wear?

Something you should pack is conservative clothing – there is an expectation of modesty in dress. Women are advised to cover their shoulders and wear long skirts or trousers in public, including when driving. Avoid bikinis on public beaches (limit this to the confines of a private beach or your hotel pool). Men should avoid toplessness and shorts in public places.
So no shorts for anyone unless you are a player. What a joke.

Traum 11-20-2022 03:39 PM

This Qatari World Cup is really shaping up to be a bigger joke with each passing day.

The FIFA president's opening speech / rant to defend the Qatari World Cup was totally inappropriate. Even if he had wanted to rant on the subject, the opening speech at the opening game was the wrong time and place for it. I can't even contemplate why he'd think that was the opportunity he should use to delivery the speech. FailFish

And then officiating was instantly poor in that very first game. Officiating has always been an issue in soccer, and you kind of expect that in any major game / tournament. Still, this one was really very bad because the evidence was just so clear -- the VAR-assisted offside call (and the resulting cancellation of the early goal) was very evidently the wrong decision to arrive at. If it was eons ago when VAR wasn't used to review decisions, at least that would have been somewhat more justifiable. But when the VAR is used and the ref still made the wrong call despite the evidence from the VAR, you destroy the credibility of the refereeing.

Terrible organization having their biggest event in a terrible country. What could go wrong?

MG1 11-20-2022 06:26 PM

Great opportunity to show the world how fucked up your country is.................... Good job, Qatar.

Gotta say that the Saudis defended well in those final minutes to finish one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history.

That Saudi goaltender played lights out. that was unreal.

StylinRed 11-22-2022 05:50 AM

A lot of people and fans on site are saying it's a bunch of fake news regarding the restrictions and how "shitty" accommodation/rules are, dunno which fake news is the fake news :lol

The tiktoks showcasing how great it is could just be fake too dunno

Tapioca 11-22-2022 06:10 AM

It should be a strong line up for Canada tomorrow as everyone is match fit, including Davies and Eustachio.

Any predictions? I'm going to say 1-1, with Canada's goal coming from the penalty spot.

That's an understatement, iirc after the 2010 world cup they fired something like 50% of the officials for taking bribes. Of course that's after they already completely altered the results. I got quite into it back then but the reffing was so bad I haven't watched it since. I don't know how anyone can stand watching something happen from 12 different angles in super slow mo high def and then have the ref say it didn't (the UK goal back in 2010 for example).

That was before I even knew what a giant bag of dicks FIFA was to boot.
