World Cup 2022

Canada is in for the first time in 36 years. Never thought that I would see this type of run in my lifetime.

The draw is this Friday and Canada has a shot of getting into Pot 3 after today's results.

I'm hoping that a good run is something the country can rally around considering the challenging last couple of years.

Reminder their last game is today at 6:05pm PT vs Panama.

A win here, from what I read, guarantees them a spot in Pot 3:

Senegal fans use laser pointers on Egyptian players.
Senegal beats Egypt in PK.
Senegal qualifies for WC, Egypt knocked out.

EDIT: Apparently Egyptian fans did the same thing to Senegalese players during the first leg in Egypt. Score: Egypt 1 - Senegal 0.

Shout out to the teams MVP. Canada's immigration system. Most of the members of the team are immigrants or the children of immigrants.

This is the reason why you get beer in plastic cups at events.

explaining it.

The draw is completed. Canada has their work cut out for them. Good luck to the team:

https://dailyhive.com/toronto/fifa-w...mg_HtOxfVz7mmk

The final country announced at the FIFA World Cup draw today, Canada will play in Group F, with matches against Belgium, Morocco, and Croatia.

As the No. 2 ranked country in the world, Belgium is the most difficult opponent in the group for the 38th-ranked Canadians. They lost in the semi-finals four years ago in Russia.

Draw doesn't seem too bad for Canada compared to the others. It'll be tough but some of those other groups are looking much tougher.

I can see Canada go 1-1-1 in their pool

Because Canada failed to win our final game and get into Pot 3, there was never going to be an easy group as a result.

With that said, this isn't the worst result. It's not impossible to get 4 points and advance to the knockout if we have our full team firing on all cylinders.

Geez, I'll be happy to see Canada even score a goal in that group let alone win a game.

After group stages, assuming Canada can get top 2 in their Group, Group F plays Group E. So we could potentially face someone like Spain or Germany in the Round of 16.

Thread bump.

Tough last couple of weeks for casual fans:
- A political snafu and a labour dispute which cost the team a valuable preparation game
- Failure to adjust to the conditions in Honduras which resulted in a loss in a winnable game.

On the positive side, Vancouver will get some games in 2026. I think it would make sense for the national team to play their group games on the West Coast given the stadium capacity vs Toronto.
