I like this take of the monarchy and it's relevant to those who want to pin things on the Queen. The British monarchy has been little more than a figurehead for a long, long time and if you're going to be upset about colonisation (or all the other bad shit Europeans did) it's no on the Queen, it's on the governments.

Prince Harry and Megan have been pretty open about how the bureaucracy is what drove them away - they couldn't do their own thing and it's fairly clear that it's the same for the Queen and whoever is monarch that they wield little real power. As the article states, they're a prisoner.

Someone forget his history lessons? Manifest Destiny? War of 1812?

Independent state? No. Without Britain, Canada would have been a US state today.

Queen Elizabeth II dies aged 96

-just heard King Charles III speech.

Things that I heard:

Message of love, respect, and service to ALL people.

Message of unity and love in the Royal family.

-a shout out from Charles to Harry and Meghan about love from the King and other family members for them.

-a big Thank you to his Mama and Papa for their love towards him and his family. Charles thanked his Mama for her lifelong commitment of service to the UK and the nations of commonwealth.

-Charles pledge of lifelong service to Britain.

What ever opinions that we have of King Charles III, I think that the Brits will give him a chance to show what kind of King he is.

As expected, William receives the title of Prince of Wales and Duke of Cornwall from his Dad.

William and Kate are the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge.

tl;dr America bad

Y'all don't want to be a US state. Trust me. Say what you want about being exploited by the Crown or the British Empire, the United States will do it worse.

Canada remained independent from the United States because they had the power and backing of the British Empire. We developed independent of the United States who put all of their points in the "Industrialize" stat which cost them bigly resources and created an ongoing culture of exploitation which concentrated power at the top. Canada fed its points throughout the rest of its stats and used the "British Empire" buff to become part of advantageous trade deals which strengthened our economy (and population makeup) as a whole.

America wants to own. Own people, own territory, own influence, own hegemony. That's the goal.

Look at the Mexican-American war that saw it grab 1/4 of the territory it owns now. It took that land, irradiated it, bled its lakes dry, and in its infinite hubris created unnatural communities and farmland at the cost of the greater population's wellbeing.

Coming out of the War of 1812 it took the land of Florida from Spain and now we may get Disney World and funny news stories about methed-out losers riding alligators into grocery stores or whatever, we the place where modern cocaine (and crack) culture was born which has created a permanent blight on our society. They ignored the issue, and took bribes when they couldn't ignore it any longer, all for a few dollars profit. They drained the swampland to allow Al and Mildred Kettlefuck a chance at a "tropical paradise" instead of living in Shitstick, Iowa so now all of the hurricanes that hit the area are a bit stronger because there is no natural barrier to them.

America helped the Russian Imperials through the Alaska purchase because neither of them wanted the British Empire (through Canada) to get bigger and now straws are being rammed through every appropriate inch of the state to suck every drop of oil from beneath. "Thats business" you may say, but its not like the Exxon Valdez oil spill didn't soak our beaches in the shit too.

Canada has access to the same resources that America does. Farmland, oil, resource mining, timber, and they could have leaned more heavily into arms development if they so wanted... but they chose a different path. Designating land as owned by the Crown and creating a cumbersome process by which we can use what is around us has had an unintended benefit, and that benefit being one of the few (largely) uninfluenced nature reserves on Earth.

The British influence on Canada is obvious, and the sins of the UK in Canada are well known by all, but we need to acknowledge that the Crown and Empire allowed us to be who we are today instead of..... something else. I'm grateful for that.

It's odd, I honestly could give a flying fuck about the Queen or the Royal Family, however I'm actually a little sad today. For an entirely different reason though.

The Queen has been around throughout my entire life, as a child we learned about her in school, she's always been relevant to a degree. I remember my mother watching the family on TV as a kid.

People are making jokes online about her death, about how Princess Diana is waiting for her with an axe up in heaven, yadda yadda.

It saddens me how shit we've become in our culture. Everything is a dig nowadays, we're in constant attack mode, even when people are mourning.

Ultimately I'm not sad about the Queen's death, but more ones own mortality. A figure I remember since childhood is now dead, it is a reminder how life is finite, someone so part of colloquial culture is now gone, as we all will be.

Yea like the discussion here is actually fairly civil compared to other forms of media lol..

El Bastardo, I kinda take issue with you making a big issue out of the US wanting to “own”
Different places and their need for that

I think most of Africa, parts of Asia, India, etc. would have somthing to say in terms of what the monarchy wanted out of them.. lol

I always like reading stories about how the Queen was a gearhead but particularly the part that she served in WWII as a mechanic. No one of her privilege needed to do that - she could easily have moved to Canada and hidden away but she chooses a thankless job and keeps living in London while it's getting bombed.

I was hoping that maybe those three dudes from the car show The Grand Tour invited the Queen to an episode one day to ask her about her car collection.

Clarkson, Hammond, and "Captain Slow' James May talking with the Queen about cars haha.

Thats fine. I'm putting what has always been the American desire to conquer and exploit into context with the possibly of Canada becoming part of the United States.

I'll admit my bias against... well... who I'm speaking against... and also acknowledge that I come across a little "tinfoil hat" when talking about it.

Quote:
In 1987, it was revealed that, despite the 1963 edition of Burke's Peerage listing Nerissa and Katherine as having died in 1940 and 1961, respectively,[1][3] the sisters were alive, and had been placed in Earlswood Hospital for mentally disabled people in 1941. In the terminology of the era, both were classified as "imbeciles", and neither learned to talk.[4] Nerissa died in 1986, aged 66, with only hospital staff attending the funeral,[4] while Katherine died in 2014, aged 86.[5] The sisters received no money from the family other than £125 paid to Earlswood each year.[4] Earlswood closed in 1997.

Yes, we all saw that episode of the Crown.

I'm sure QEII had so much to do with their upbringing having been born after one of them and shorty before the other.

Don't you have anything better to do?

Manic, you're giving off some Chucky in charge vibes in this thread. Let it go man...

My 100% Chinese parents and family call India the homeland because of the Japanese (Nanking Massacre) but we're all here now, its okay. They can't hurt us anymore and my mom couldn't be happier driving her made in Japan Honda Fit.

Back on topic, QE was like the grandmother we're all use to seeing but never paying much attention to. Rest easy homie

A whole lot of hate for what Lizzie represent as a member of the monarchy.

Not a whole lot has been said about what she personally stood for, her personall view whether political or not. Crazy to think at her death, we still only know her as the Queen.

To remain impartial, to even upheld this image of neutrality is extremely hard. To do that for 70years is pure class and respect. A feat even her own immediate family fail to do. Should she have taken side at any point in history? Sure, but its her job not to and you gotten give her respect for doing that.

I just want to say, a youtube video should never be used as a "source" for an argument, whether in this context or others.

It instantly removes credibility. The only thing worse than youtube videos is memes.

The youtube video is from one of the oldest newstubers and explains why so many people are happy she is dead.

Everything the Queen has is stolen. That 400 million dollar diamond on the crown was stolen from India.

Given how the Queen has been in public service for so long, I think most people who pay some attention to her and don't hate her guts have a general idea of what she stood for.

I was reading this following quote of hers yesterday or today, and I think it summed up who she viewed herself as:

Quote:
"When I was 21, I pledged my life to the service of our people and I asked for God's help to make good that vow. Although that vow was made in my salad days, when I was green in judgement, I do not regret nor retract one word of it."
She knew that as the Queen of Britain and the Commonwealth, she is supposed to remain impartial and non-political, so that is what she did publically, and she kept the personal views out of the public's eyes.

She took her duty as the Queen as the single most important thing extremely seriously, and as you have said -- she did so unrelentingly for 70 yrs literally until the day she died.

There are certainly things about the Queen that I do not agree with. But I respect her for who she is, and how steadfast she has been all her life.

I have already said this earlier, but I will say it again -- I am not a Royal watcher, but I am profoundly sad that the Queen has died.

I'm sure at least some of us have come across the following poem since it seems to be making the rounds through the Internet, but it is so beautifully written that I think I should post it here again:

Quote:
Phillip came to me today,
and said it was time to go.
I looked at him and smiled,
as i whispered that "I know"

I then turned and looked behind me,
and seen I was asleep.
All my family were around me,
and I could hear them weep.

I gently touched each shoulder,
with Phillip by my side.
Then I turned away and walked,
With my angel guide.

Phillip held my hand,
as he lead the way,
to a world where Kings and Queens
Are Monarchs every day.

I was given a crown to wear
or a halo known by some.
The difference is, up here,
They are worn by everyone.

I felt a sense of peace,
My reign had seen its end.
70 years I had served my Country,
As the peoples' friend.

Thank you for the years,
For all your time and love.
Now I am one of two again,
In our Palace up above.

(supposedly) by Joanne Boyle
