Apparently there are 10 softtops that were sold in Canada:

Quote:
In 2009 there were 97 CY MX-5's sold. 10 soft tops (5 GX, 5 GS) sold and 87 PHRT (38 GS, 49 GT) sold. GX models had a black vinyl roof and GS models had the black cloth roof. In 2010 there were 20 CY MX'5's sold, 6 soft tops (4 GX, 2 GS) sold, and 14 PHRT (4 GS, 10 GT) sold. So to total that up there were only 106 CY MX-5's sold in Canada in 2 years.
I like this colour in a PRHT as I think the black softtop kinda ruins the look.

Yah for some reason the special editions are often fully loaded in Canada… my 2008 icy blue one only came in fully loaded PRHT manual in Canada… but in the USA you could get it with an automatic and soft top.

Interesting to only some of us but Competition Yellow NCs are extremely rare - only offered for 2 years and I believe there are less than 150 that ever made it to Canada. The price is pretty reasonable as I'm seeing NC1s listing for $20k (crazy!). This is my second favourite NC colour after Velocity Red (the bees knee is the 2006 launch edition trim). The ad mistakenly lists it as an auto when it's clearly a 6 speed.

It sold pretty quickly. I wanted to take a look but had some travels that took me out of town. It's got a couple claims including a $5k front end within the first year of ownership, hence why the front bumper color looks totally off. The car got posted by like 3 sales guys on FB, and from all the pics, the car looked pretty worn all around. I guess it doesn't matter if it's a track car.

It's probably a blessing in disguise that I didn't go see it, despite me really liking the competition yellow NC - saves the headache of figuring out what to do with another car.

The hard top keeps your helmet from hitting the ground. It's not so much whether if it's structural but rather it's not the first point of contact. That's the reason for the broomstick test, if you fit under the rollbar/hoop and windshield, those would hit the ground first before your head does.

A hard top will be strong enough to take a glancing hit or sliding upsidedown on the ground. And if you hit a pole top first, hardtop or slicktop it really makes no difference at the end you are still going to get rekt.

In the NA/NB Miatas, their shells are so flexy that having a hard top really adds quite a bit of chassis rigidity to the car. In the NC, the extra rigidity can also be felt, but difference is nowhere nearly as prounced as the change was in an NA/NB.

I don't remember how many points of locking the NA/NB has to mount the hardtop -- it is probably 6. But 4 of those are just latches, and the other 2 are just the frankenstein bolts. The NC has 5 + 2, with 3 of them being latches, 2 frankenstein bolts, and the last 2 really just nothing more than guide posts. The general assuming with Miata (removable) hard tops are -- expect them to pop off if you get into any kind of serious enough accident. You can replace the 2 side latches with bolted tie down plates, and that will add a lot more security to noticeably reduce the chance of the top popping off in a crash. But even then, I still wouldn't call it structural.

A good roll bar is what you'd call structural, and the following picture really speaks a thousand words about why you want a good roll bar in a convertible.

That's the yellow we were talking about earlier in the thread. Rare colour, and since I want a soft top, even rarer combo. Traum said there's 10, I've never seen one and would probably cost a pretty penny if available.

Miatas are great ! Who doesn’t like a light weight, manual, rear wheel drive convertible at around 35-45k brand new ! What a screaming deal. Basically a no brainer

Nah man. 40k is cheap nowadays. He’ll even 20 years ago they were around 30-40k. It really hasn’t increased in price and the car has gotten a lot better.

They are 3k off right now - incentive from Mazda
36k for a GS-P is a screaming deal and it even gets comfort goodies like acoustic windshield / bose / auto dimming mirrors

I'd skip the $4.4k sport pack because the BBS are barely lighter and the brembos don't come with bigger rotors.

I'd do 124 abarth seats and red metal tach for $700.
You could also get real tires, a BBK, and wider wheels for like $2.4k

You'd also get the Mazda Motorsports catalog with dope shit at a discount:
-Transmissions for $1500, stronger gearsets
-Rays ZE40 for like 60% off, $361 a wheel
-Adjustable sway bars that no one else sells
-Spec Miata Penske shocks

It's a cool buy, but did they only come in autos? I guess if you really want, you can lhd swap too. I guess it would be more fun than a pick up. But then no AWD traction

That's what I'm talking about, if you crash and put it on the roof will the hard top actually do anything or is it just going to crush down? When I cut through the fixed roof of a parts car once there was something like 4-7 layers of metal through the pillars and the various parts of the roof framing. Those removable tops don't look to have anything like that.
