i'll post my initial impressions after playing 45 minutes.

I've only tried arcade racing so far...the visuals for rain and snow is not as nice as i had expected...

the tire screech and physics are still off...the game still focus too much on engine sound and not enough on exhaust tune IMO...damage is so minimal even if it's a crash at 180kph. and my biggest pet peeve..you still have to hit triangle for clutch on g25/27..I dont know if the LED shift light works..can anyone confirm? Im disappointed they didnt add G wheel full support. and I'm not sure why it took 50 minutes to install 6.5GB of game data... it probably takes a bit over 30 min to install 12GB on a PC

Things I liked: night racing is very fun. Jaggies in replay seem to have disappeared when comparing to Prologue..haven't tried photo mode yet but from the images on the internet it looks great.

Played about an hour so far

Pros:
The intro was pretty sweet
G25 full clutch enabled is nice, as said above mine worked as soon as I switched to MT, an it's nice now that when you step on the clutch it is disengaged, so engine revs up etc
Graphics are very nice
Tuning changes engine sounds, my turbo EK sounds pretty sweet

Cons:
Non premium cars no rim change WTF...really, that's what customizing is all about..
The interface for GT mode isn't great
The "car delivery" truck is stupid, just show me the car when I win it and put it in my garage
The collision sound is just horrible, on my surround setup it such a big dull bass "THUD" sounds retarded

It prett much your typical GT, im hoping there are some suprises along the way in GT mode

LMAO Spent 55k on a prius.... Fancy clutch and flywheel, stage 2 tune, ecu upgrade, exhaust manifold, titanium exhaust, pretty much everything I could to get the power up there. $25k of engine mods later and I'm at 1244 kg and 134 hp or smth... FML lol still fast enough to win any beginner races and with the medium suspension handles quite good.

Money is too easy to come by especially with the special events. Nurburgring challenge 2 races = almost 30k.

After playing a couple hours of arcade and GT mode I've concluded

For me definitely prefer Forza 3 over GT5.

With Forza the whole game was just much easier to get into. Was more fun tuning the cars and rims/kits. Just seemed more well balanced to me.

The music and the sound effects are pretty bad with GT5. I find GT5 gameplay more frustrating also. Although I was expecting a wayyyy better game, this game still isn't BAD. But coming from playing Forza, really seems GT5 is lacking. Seems like they cared more about the graphics then the gameplay. I was hoping they were gonna take alot of the positives from Forza and put a better spin on it.

I played the Top Gear track and boy was that frustrating driving that POS. I either got pit maneuvered by the CPU or came a little too fast in a corner and bumped into the CPU and got disqualified. I hope they don't have like 30+ min races and if you bump into an opponent you get to start ALL over again. I would throw my fucking PS3 off the balcony

yes, before u choose to start the race, where ur at the grid posting screen, there's the "start" "save" "replay" "option" "______" "exit"

that "______" is where u go in to adjust the settings for ur car.

You won't beable to mod a g25/g27 to work an xbox because the xbox requires a certain driver inorder for it to work >.< That's why for sf4 the arcade sticks could be modded to work with both xbox and ps3 IF the stick was a xbox stick to begin with.

I agree with people on forza 3 > gt5, but the only reason I'm choosing gt5 over forza 3 is because I can actually play with my steering wheel, whereas the xbox wheel kinda sucks when I had one a year ago...

Man this has to be the most uneven experience ever. The whole standard vs premium thing is a travesty and some of the tracks just look god awful... 2D sprites... come on.

At its best it's a great looking game but at its worse, it can't even beat Forza 2. And wtf is with all the screen tearing?

The AI is still dumb as hell. Seems like they still follow their "lines" and just knock away everything in their path.

I was hoping the GT team would take notice of what Forza has done too... the UI in GT5 is terrible. The in-game HUD is so cluttered and ugly compared to Forza which is way more minimalist. Things are terribly laid out, not user-friendly at all, and the loading between menus, ugh. At least the menus look pretty I guess.

I'd give this game a 7.5 or 8/10. If this game came out around the PS3 launch or within a year or two, it probably would've impressed me but Forza and even NFS Shift just did so much more to advance their games since GT4.

So Gran Turismo 5 doesn't have enough to offer offline; everyone has to go and clog up the online servers immediately?

Well, all that traffic is causing problems for the GT5 servers. Sony just made mention of the congestion and what you can do to combat any issues; Eurogamer posted the notice and a few additional comments Sony made within the in-game GT5 news feed. While they work on things, they ask you to do the following:

"Because GT5 performs online access not only when participating in online races and using community features, but also when starting the game and during the various screen displays in GT Mode, unfortunately this online congestion is also affecting standard gameplay.

Currently we are simultaneously working on several different solutions to improve the network status and alleviate the network congestion as soon as possible. We are expecting to be able to provide a proper online service again soon. We sincerely apologise to our customers for the inconvenience."

In addition, we have learned they'll be providing us with the first patch on Saturday. GT creator and Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi told Eurogamer that they've received quite a few demands and suggestions for online fixes, and the developers will waste no time in responding:

"We received a lot of demands for having more regulations placed on the online play. We're going to perform an update on the 27th that will include things like max power restrictions and weight restrictions.

It's like a living creature, dynamically growing as we speak."

This update will "refine the usability of the game to make it a better experience," which is really what we want from all big patches, right? Yamauchi adds that it'll be "hard to find an end to the process," what with GT5 being so freakin' big and so freakin' popular. So for the time being, or at least until the weekend, maybe you should just focus on offline stuff...you know, there's quite a bit to do.

Man this has to be the most uneven experience ever. The whole standard vs premium thing is a travesty and some of the tracks just look god awful... 2D sprites... come on.

At its best it's a great looking game but at its worse, it can't even beat Forza 2. And wtf is with all the screen tearing?

The AI is still dumb as hell. Seems like they still follow their "lines" and just knock away everything in their path.

I was hoping the GT team would take notice of what Forza has done too... the UI in GT5 is terrible. The in-game HUD is so cluttered and ugly compared to Forza which is way more minimalist. Things are terribly laid out, not user-friendly at all, and the loading between menus, ugh. At least the menus look pretty I guess.

I'd give this game a 7.5 or 8/10. If this game came out around the PS3 launch or within a year or two, it probably would've impressed me but Forza and even NFS Shift just did so much more to advance their games since GT4.

IGN says you can import all cars from Gran Turismo PSP. Sweet I got like 300 cars up and running in that. :D
Apparently that's only for Arcade mode. I heard that you could transfer cars from GT5P so I grinded for an hour or two to buy some nice cars and you can transfer them to the game. I was annoyed to say the least


Edit: anyone else have issues with the initial installation? I had to restart the game 8 times and it gets stuck at 35 seconds still, seems pointless to install the game as it loads for a minute before everything

I like the art style in GT5 better. Cars look a lot more realistic than Forza. Forza has this slight cartoonish colouring/look to their cars. Forza could also use more cars that aren't high-end... but I guess most people don't really want to drive Camry's and Accord's in a game.

I was so amped to get ready and purchase a Carrera GT and then I was like "wtf I can't even find the Porsche logo" ... then I went back on the computer to google it... I never really kept up with the articles of GT5 except the release date ... but I can't believe they couldn't get the license for Porsche ... I like the game.. Its good not what every1 was expecting but it has its pros and cons like any game out there.

TG Test track trick..
If you want the top gear test track you first must be at level 4.. You race the vw van and top 3 u get the tg test track in ur worlwide section. AI in this suck bad all u have to do is in every corner brake late.. Dont worry it can take it.. Just dont hit the cones of the cars too hard..You should be in 3rd place by the end of the lap.. You can only get first if you blow past the AI in the last 2 corners.

Also the horn button in the very left red button of the 5...

I drove the older Rx7 and added the full exhaust system.. Was playing front car view and the sound was pretty loud then I went to outside car view and my subs would shake the house while the car was idling... LOL its soo freaking loud in the game..

I also love the fact you can guy used cars.. Makes the game more interesting.

I am sorely soley disappointed with this game and it seems like the things that needed dire attention in GT4 creep their ugly head back into the franchise. The load times when you add parts to your car after you buy them is something that was unforgivable in GT4. Before, I circumvented this by buying all the shit I need on my car without installing it, then going into a race and going to the car settings to upgrade my car without any loading time between putting on each part. Why the fuck is there a load time putting mods onto a car when you install it from the point of purchase and not when you add them on at the track?? The load time are back again and It's 10-15 seconds of wait time, and I don't remember having to do all this waiting in GT3. I've already installed the game on the harddrive and it still takes a while to load. What I hated about GT4 returns again in this game such as the oil changes and the car washes. I don't care to see virtual men wiping my car down or getting under the car to change the oil. If I wanted to watch my oil get changed, I would have went to my mechanic.

The second thing that really disappointed me is how the game freakin' looks. It looks so dated and shitty. The lane markings around corners are still not a curved line and edges that are supposed to be curved are still constructed of straight edges. I thought we are in modern enough times that true curved surfaces can be drawn. Curved surfaces was already the norm when quake 3 came out and that was over 10 years ago. The cars look like shit and you don't even really need to look close to the models in game to notice. They just jump out at you like a sore thumb. The window frames around the car look pixelated as if it was a small texture being stretched out over the car. The shadows around the car before the game start jitters and they tear. Why is this the way it is? This is a PS3 we're talking about and it does not have the limitations that a PS2 has. For the developers to delay the game because it didn't look good, they sure have a shitty sense for quality. The game was delayed because they didn't think that the track on Nur had the correct graffiti well, there are more important things in the game they should have looked for like broken textures.

Sure the game is higher definition but it looks like they basically ripped all the cars from GT4 and just stuck them in GT5 and gave them a gloss over. The tracks look sharper but it wasn't anything to go home about. It still looks like an HD version of GT4.

The game is pretty monotonous as it always has been and having to race against a shitty AI that is like hitting a brick wall when you crash them in the tail just adds insult to injury. I mean the AI is as dumb of a fuck as it’s always been and still crash into you like you’re not there. The AI can slow you down when you’re in contact with them but it doesn’t seem to slow them down. They can tap you in the back and I’d lose control but when you tap them in return they are just going about driving in their own line like they were on rails. This is complete and utter bullshit. It’s like playing GT3 all over again but with all the flaws of GT4.

The worst part about this game is the EXP system to get newer cars and to go into newer races. Who the fuck thought it was going to be a good idea to turn this into Final Fantasy? If I have the fucking money to buy an FD, I should be able to buy a fucking FD and not have to get to level 5 to fucking buy it. It doesn’t end there, when I do reach level 5, the fucking car is GONE from the used dealership. This is supposed to be a fucking simulator not a fucking RPG. If I go to a Car dealer with the appropriate funds, is he going to say “oh you’re not high enough level to buy this car, sorry GTFO”? Fuck, no. So why are they imposing this shit that I can’t buy a used car built in the 90s because it’s level 5? That’s some bullshit right there. If I have enough money I should be able to buy this fucking car. If the experience system applied to what race you can go into then I’d understand but this is buying a fucking USED CAR. If this were a Ferrari or some shit I would understand but common, it’s a fucking car under 300 horsepower that’s based on a chassis designed in the 80s.

Where does this game go really wrong? The licensing system. The game requires me to go through this AGAIN before I can do the upper level races. WHY ARE THERE TWO REQUIREMENTS NOW TO RACE. LICENSING SHOULD BE ENOUGH TO FUCKING RACE NOT EXP. Jesus. Use one or the other, not fucking two. How would you like it if you have to spend a shit load of time in Final Fantasy Levelling up to fight a tough as shit boss but you didn’t get the license from a town person to go through a cave or some shit to get there to fight the fucking boss?

All in all this game is a polished turd. Not that I’m not a big fan of the franchise for its vast selection of cars, but this game is worse than a rehash. It takes all the annoyances of the previous game and adds more inane “features” to prolong the repetitiveness to the game. Nothing is new in this game; there is absolutely no technical innovation in this game. Online racing and leaderboards? Done before, watching car related videos? Seriously? Is this a feature? I’ve been watching Top Gear years before and this is supposed to be something new? I really shouldn`t need to pay fifty fucking dollars to watch shit I can find on youtube. Making your own tracks? Well that’s sort of new I guess.


If I didn’t get this game as a gift, I seriously would have tried it at a friend`s house first before buying it. I didn`t even go into this with that many expectations. I just wanted this game to get me into the race quicker and at least use some modern way of representing the cars. Once you see the jaggies on the textures of the cars, you can`t unsee them. Fuck. If you have GT4 still, keep playing that. It won’t have a stupid EXP system. 3/10

You won't beable to mod a g25/g27 to work an xbox because the xbox requires a certain driver inorder for it to work >.< That's why for sf4 the arcade sticks could be modded to work with both xbox and ps3 IF the stick was a xbox stick to begin with.

I agree with people on forza 3 > gt5, but the only reason I'm choosing gt5 over forza 3 is because I can actually play with my steering wheel, whereas the xbox wheel kinda sucks when I had one a year ago...

The lack of steering wheel (good steering wheel) is the only reason why I didn't pickup an Xbox360 & Forza3.
Controller vs controller, I actually find Forza3 more fun and enjoyable than GT5 Prologue, but once you get used to playing on steering wheel, you don't wanna go back..

ah yea here's the clip that fully exposes the flaw of car sounds in GT, simply put seems like they just focused on the engine sound alone totally leaving the exhaust out. It's like a car with no exhaust engine only, for those of you that have VQ engines FX45/G35/350Z you know the distinct throaty VQ gurgle and what it is, in this clip you can see it's completely missing from GT while Forza really brings it true to life..

Man, am i ever glad i'm not around in Vancouver to pick up this game! Seems like its really disappointing! The biggest thing thats disappointed me about the GT series is the AI. It's always following a line. Would be alot better if it were dynamic and tried to make moves to take you, or blocking you and battling for position. Not doing the same thing every single lap. I'm not a huge gamer, and have both a PS3 and a Xbox360 and have always found the Forza series to be much better than the GT series. I'm really looking forward to see what the next Forza is going to be like. I can't wait!

No GT game has been a "pickup and play" game, even with the arcade mode. It is like a flight simulator, it takes some learning to become good at it.

ah yea here's the clip that fully exposes the flaw of car sounds in GT, simply put seems like they just focused on the engine sound alone totally leaving the exhaust out. It's like a car with no exhaust engine only, for those of you that have VQ engines FX45/G35/350Z you know the distinct throaty VQ gurgle and what it is, in this clip you can see it's completely missing from GT while Forza really brings it true to life..

fck this game just keeps disappointing and I only managed to play 5 minutes of it before my TV crapped out on me, now I'm just sittin here reading about you guys playin it lol

None... you can only choose wheels for "premium" cars but there are only like 30 choices which are really just 10 choices in 3 different colours each... it sucks lol, I think you can custom paint them though

The trick is to draft A LOT.
The first 2 corners you do not need to break.
Maybe the second one for a tap.

For the second corner go the left side of the 11 place car and immediately try and cut the 10th place car on the right side. You ll end up in the middle of turn 3. Exiting turn 3 you will be right behind the 8th place car.

Draft the shit out of the car because you will need to pass the 8th and 7th car or they will block you at the hammer head.

after the follow through is the tricky part. cut the grass a tiny bit and just tap the brakes for like half a second. you will be at 4th place. BE VERY CAREFUL because if you touch to much of the grass ur disqualified or if you slam behind one of the cars ur disqualified

after that its straight forward. I got 1st place on the last corner on the last lap. won by .5 seconds I believe

the lotus one is just hell. the real car would be easier to drive IMO. its nuts.
I don't know why the handling is so off, I know the car is light yet the Elise is supposed to be nimble on the track, not breaking the rear end loose all over the place. If I time my braking exactly with an AI car ahead I cannot brake in time, the AI cars brake/corner much better. I'd blame my driving with the controller for some of it, yet not this much.

It seems like they took the handling of the go kart and applied it to this car.

K guys the only thing I know about the TG test track is I got first place with the VW van so thats what probably got me the track in my lists... Also the Lotus one was pretty hard too took my a good 30 minutes of swearing b4 i got 1st place... I usually stick to the races untill i get all gold... It was pretty easy.. If you do the special events and get gold you make alot of $$$$ Made $285K in about 3-4 races... All gold...

A-Spec races are pennies compared to special events. This game is pretty easy for me besides a few headaches on some races... but all in all I find that AI brakes to early so If i brake late I just pass them all. Not even running abs or TC...

Ive even done races where my car is the most under powered but i always beat them in the corners.. And when i try to block them on the straights they try to avoid me...

I don't own the game yet, but I've seen videos and noticed that every AI car brakes way too early. Is there a way of changing the difficulty of the AI to make it seem like you're racing people that weren't hit in the head with a hammer?

I've decided even though all this negativity I hear about the game, I'm still going to pick this game up tonight. I can stay away from the standards and just use the premiums. Hell the photo mode looks unreal, at least I can start a collection of pics for my screensaver on my PC. =)

I read somewhere that you can literally just walk anywhere on any track and take pictures? I'm pretty sure I read that but can anyone confirm? Is the 49.99 price tag at superstore still price matchable to?

So dissappointed in this game..... I had high expectations, especially waiting for 5 years.

Standard vs Premium cars = what a joke. They should have done a major overhaul rather than copied and pasted the GT4 cars. Why would you limit the amount of modifications on a standard car compared to premium. And the addition of flashing the lowbeam + windshield wipers . . . . please. Damage limited to Premium cars only. C'mon seriously, if it's intended to be a real racing simulator, then you should have real damage simulations.

The only plus I can give this, are the graphics and the new snow and wet courses. Other than that, gameplay is still same, and I'd give Forza>GT on ths one.

de tune it to engine mods stage one. raise the suspension to give it more travel. run softer damper and spring rates. stablizer bar softer too.

torque on the EK9 is weak... but the FF layout also causes it to spin its front wheels... even going straight.. its annoying :facepalm:

Anyone with a G25 test this out please.

Put you shifter into sequential.. When braking and shifting down does it auto shift down for you? When i was driving the ferrari italia.. I put it in sequential becuase of 7th gear.. So i did a race everytime i would shift down it shifted me down 2 gears everytime... I think its the game that auto shifts down for sequential mode. This also happened to me doing the TG test track with the lotus.. I was getting fed up of hitting a cone or a car so i put it in sequential and same thing happens.

On a side note.. Was playing split screen with the GF, we were doing go carts in the top gear track.. Freaking fun as hell.. Soo many laughs.. I would knock all the cones down in the first lap of 5 then race is on trying to dodge all the cones becuase if you hit one you fly and start hopping... We also did the nurburg took us 12mins bumpy as hell on that track but if your good its easy to control...

The reward system for money doesn't work like the old GTs. Say Gold is 30. Silver is 20 and Bronze is 10. If you get Bronze. You only get 10. You can race again and try to beat it but if you get Bronze again you'll get nothing. If you get silver the second time you'll only get another 20 (Total 30). But if you get gold after bronze youll get 30 (total 60). If you got gold the first time you would have recieved 60 ( 10 + 20 +30) from the beginning. Catch my drift?

I believe Special Events' Prize money is a "one off" thing.
Meaning each prize can only be won "once".

I.e. If you win Gold, you will automatically win the prize money for Gold + Silver + Bronze, any subsequent race you win won't give you anymore prize.

If you win Bronze, you will get Bronze prize money. If you play again and win Gold, you will get Gold + Silver Prize money (but not bronze since you already won it)

Basically..you can't keep replaying special events to win money.


Btw..i had been playing the game w/o connecting to internet. Yesterday, after I connect to internet, sign in to PSN and did the update, the game now hangs at the menu screen!! :(
Tried it a few times but the same thing...
however, when I disconnect the network, I am able to play again..? wtf....anyone knows why?

if you are freezing after the update ,just disconnect your internet connection. It's trying to connect to GT servers and it keeps timing out..which is why you get stuck there.

for games like NFS and burn-out controllers fine.

racing simulators i would not bother without a wheel cause they give you so much more precision for steering,braking, and throttle. The face buttons of a controller has such a limited degree of pressure sensitivity.
