Essentially half way through a Storm of Swords right now and I am so hooked...Especially because you end up getting to know Jaime more. I was set on hating his guts during the first season/book but once you find out more about his inner struggles, you end up sympathizing with him and end up changing your perception.

There a few instances of this in the later books too. There are characters you hate that you will eventually love (or at least feel for, especially by the time DWD rolls around) and there will also be chars that you love early in the story that you are cursing at by the end of the most recent book.

That's a spoiler for book 2. The thing he says happens about 80% of the way through A Clash of Kings and is mentioned at the beginning of A Storm of Swords.

BUT...if you read til the end of book 2...you'd know that...

The two Stark boys aren't dead...they hid in the crypts. Theon Greyjoy found two other boys that were similar and killed them to look like Brann and Wicken.

I'm almost sure you're reading the wrong book...that you're reading A Storm of Swords instead of A Clash of Kings.

Because A Storm of Swords begins with Catelyn Stark talking about what you're talking about (after the prologue) and A Clash of Kings begins with Aria and Sansa.

What you're talking about is one of the main plot points from the end of book 2 to the beginning of book 3. There's no way you read it at the beginning of book 2. I know I'm only listening to audiobooks but still, I don't remember any mention of it at the beginning of A Clash of Kings.

None of what I say below is actually a spoiler...but if you don't want to know what you just spoiled for yourself, then don't read this.

The first few chapters of A Storm of Swords actually tells a lot about A Clash of Kings. More importantly...it tells you who survives, which simply removes a lot of the suspense. That thing you know...well, that's just going to spoil some of the best parts of the last third of book 2.

You poor bastard. Go buy the whole set so you don't make this mistake again. :lol

I can't think of anything important from book 1 that wasn't covered in the series. Except if you went right from the series to book 2, you would probably not be as familiar with the characters. because on TV familiarity with secondary characters are based on looks, while in the book the characters have more personality. And some characters were changed quite a bit, such as Yoren and Theon Greyjoy, Alisar, and probably more. Even The Hound was changed a bit, as he was kinder to Sansa in the book (he is the one who told her his burn story, not Littlefinger, and he made her promise not to tell anyone about it). The Direwolves are also much more prominent in the book.

Lancel is Cersei's cousin. He's Ser Kevan's (Ser Tywin's brother) eldest son. They do mention later on in the books of Lancel and Cersei's relationship.

The TV show tends to add elements from later books and they reported that they'd be doing the same for the second season...whatever works, I guess!

So... any predictions on what'll happen in book six? Stannis is allegedly dead (though I'm having a hard time believing that, especially with Mance being a part of that group at the time), and Jon Snow also theoretically dead or dying with that cliffhanger of an ending.

I do have to say that I'm not enjoying the Bran sidestory with the greenseers. I've been finding my eyes just glazing over whenever I read that portion of the story. That said, any thoughts on who the "ranger" on that giant elk is/was? I know most people assume it's Jon's uncle, but I have a feeling it might turn out to be someone completely different.

Hopefully book six comes out sooner than DWD did... :(

I'm going to rename this thread sometime and put down a set of rules for discussing this series.

The first book just contains a lot more detail on many sub plots that expand later. Like in the books you learn more about Theon who becomes an increasingly important character in the later books. Same with Little Finger, The Hound, Bronn (Tyrion's mercenary) and a lot of the characters at the wall and at King's Landing.

These are pretty subtle but there are important facts here that impact things in the next book. Also it would be a REALLY quick read if you've seen the series. Since you could largely skim through some stuff.

It's just the sort of series where something small in book one turns out to be something huge by book 6. In the tv series they had to cull a lot of plot lines or it would be unmanageble for a show. In the book there's no such restrictions.

Sure the Umbers are great, but I found the Karstarks to be rather important for other things to come. Heck they didn't even glaze over the Karstarks from the skirmish prior to capturing Jaime. There's absolutely nothing wrong with either watching the gay scenes, or fast forwarding through them.

Some people are more uncomfortable than others. It's neither gay nor wrong wanting to skip through them.

After watching films or shows (like Spartacus & GoT), I usually suck it up and watch them with a 'do not want' face. Alternatively, I just have my eyes slightly wonder off somewhere else during those scenes. That's probably the best thing you can do so that you wouldn't have to miss any dialogue :)

I'm halfway through A Dance with Dragons and I LOVE the world that GRRM created. It's so interesting and rich that sometimes I think living in it would be awesome despite the fact that you can be murdered or raped at any time and everyone seems like an asshole.

I really enjoy the random characters...BECAUSE NOTHING IS RANDOM. A friend of mine that I convinced to watch the show also complained about the random characters so I'll tell you the same thing I told them...everyone is important somehow. Everyone is tied to the same plot. Everything is related. Some characters showing up in one storyline will move to another. I was bored to death with the Dornish plotline in book 4 until about halfway through and then it became evident how much that part mattered.

The best characters are still Tyrion, Jon Snow, Aria and Daenerys.

this goes down differently in the book. drogo is actually hurt in battle with another dothraki tribe (the scene in the burning villiage where the "weird lady" is getting raped). he kills the opposing khal and the khals successor back to back but gets wounded during the fight.

red priestess, "lord of light" its a newer religion in the world of game of thrones, there's refrences in the books to "blood" magic being the most powerfull etc. and she had sex with Stannis to conceive the baby although i dont think thats how it happened in the books

she also was trying to make sacrifices in order to gain the favor of the gods, hence more blood magic

the shadow part isnt anything with a past to prior episodes, it was more just showing the true power she has

In the book it happened almost exactly how it happened in the show. Since you only see it from the Onion Knight's perspective first and later from Cat, neither no WTF is going on so there's not a great deal of explination until later on when Mel's efforts become more overt.

They sure don't show the dragons much in this show. From what I heard, having CGI + live action is EXTREMELY expensive to produce. It probably costs more to show 1 minute of dragons than it does to do an entire war scene.

I don't think those two burnt bodies are Rickon and Bran. They didn't die in the book... Might be just some random commoner kids?

Noticed that half way through season one. I went back to watch the opening creds of the first episode and they added in a bunch of different places :ahwow:

I don't like how they changed so many things. Last nights episode just seemed like filler to me.

It's like they are rushing through a lot while adding in useless crap to fill up time.

I'm so disappointed that there is no Jojen and Meera this season.

I have been waiting for that since we met her. She's one of my favorite of the female characters at this part of the series because she's one of the few that is both very strong and not hyper sexualized (even though she does talk about sex it's almost always to mock rather then flirt).

ygritte has been great so far, playing the role perfectly

it seems like they are really consolidating all the side plots to funnel the end of this season into the battle on the blackwater and have that as the primary focus

its so tough to really put the depth that the books have into each of the side plots in hour long episodes
