To everyone that thought this series was slow...
...shit is about to get real.
Other shows are afraid of sweeping changes that affect ratings. George RR Martin has no such reservations.

You guys should really read the books, there is soooo much more insight and character development.
The casting for this series is awesome, the portrayals are damned good for the character that were written.
And seeing stuff like tonight's ending brought to life was so much better for it.
Also, she's got more acting chops than I expected.
And for those waiting for shit to get real with Arya...
Let's just say you're going to have to be a bit more patient...

I found the detailed description of the Unsullied one of the most interesting parts during that part of the story, like the accounts of their past battles.
Just think Spartans. That's basically how badass they are.

Exactly what I was thinking.
Mr. Martin has to do some seriously FAST writing and editing SOON, or the show will catch up.
The problem is that many of these Epic Fantasy authors have book deals with the publishers where they agree to X number of books for X $.
So, he is contractually obligated to write X number of books.
The problem then is that readers sometimes get books with a lot of words, and very little action that carries the story forwards.
This happened to the latest Dance With Dragons and Feast for Crows.

There are 10 this season, although each episode is about 5 min longer, which over a season adds up to more than an extra episode.
I just wish the author would hurry up and get the next book finished already. The show is going to catch up real quick.
According to Wiki...
Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss intend to adapt the entirety of the still incomplete A Song of Ice and Fire novel series, if HBO permits it. They envision the series to have a scope of some 80 hours, about eight seasons' worth of material.[25] However, Benioff and Weiss have no stated intention of padding Game of Thrones out so as to wait for George R.R. Martin (who has taken up to six years to write an installment of A Song of Ice and Fire) to finish writing the last two novels. Knowing the broad outlines of Martin's intended ending for A Song of Ice and Fire, and concerned that extending Game of Thrones to ten seasons would kill its sense of momentum, they consider it possible (if not preferable) that the TV series ends before the last novel is published.[26]
...
Seasons 1 and 2 each adapted one novel. For the later seasons, the creators conceive of Game of Thrones as an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire as a whole, rather than of individual novels.[31] This gives them the liberty to move events back and forth across books according to the requirements of the screen adaptation.[32]
The four seasons ordered so far each consist of ten episodes. Most episodes from the first and second season run for about 52 minutes, while many of the third season's episodes are 56 or 57 minutes long. The series' pilot and the second season finale run for more than an hour, as is also likely for the third season's finale.[30][33]

This isn't really a spoiler, but I suggest to anyone who hasn't read the books to go back and watch the Walder Frey episodes, where Robb Stark promised to marry his daughter to gain passage.
He needs his help again, but married someone else, and in the last episode they didn't really play up the consequences very well.. he was like "we need them but err I was supposed to marry his daughter lol oops"
You should know what kind of person Walder Frey is, so go back and watch that episode to remind yourself :)

Yeah, Robb Stark's storyline grew a little too boring for me...
Book Spoiler
Well, until the Red Wedding, at least. :p
Dany, Jon Snow and Stannis are the three main characters in the later books I look forward to. I, too, used to enjoy Arya's part but not much has happened lately.
Actually the one I dislike the most, which unfortunately means will probably play the biggest role later on in the series, is Bran's storyline. It's too boring and even in a world where "magic" and "gods" are kinda live, it just seems like a bit of a stretch. The whole Warg bit in the book annoys me a little bit.

I have to say...the storylines are WAY more interesting in the book. The details are lost in the show.
And you lose some cool reveals, like Barristen Selmy and Theon Greyjoy. Those were sort of WWWTTTTTFFFFF moments in the book. Not huge moments but I thought they were interesting.
I guess they're not spoilers anymore...
Barristen the Bold grows a beard and hides his identity at first until way later. Theon...well, shit happens.

I thought I remembered that the shit happening to Theon doesn't really happen until book 3 or 4? And that's at the hands of, well... guess I shouldn't say yet as it hasn't been revealed in the tv show yet. Or am I simply remembering incorrectly?

IRRC the boat was carrying Loras Tyrell (the homosexual prince) and the boat scene is to dramatize Sansa's lost chance of escaping the evil clutches of the Lanisters.
IRRC Littlefinger was still in King's Landing at the end of the episode (bickering with the eunuch).

It's implied that the people of importance and power know. Loris is heir to one of the richest areas of Westeros. The people that know he's gay are other people in the loop and, like that squire dude, other gays with good gaydar. I highly doubt the common people know about his homosexuality. Women everywhere love the guy. If jousting was the big sport of the time, this guy was LeBron.

But, it looks like the action is slowing down, so the plot is compressed, in order for HBO to make MORE episodes and MORE seasons.

I actually disagree with you there.
To me, the show actually feels quite compressed compared to the books. Lots is being left out.
The books easily have enough content to be 2 seasons per book.
But I think budgeting is the issue.
They just don't have the budget to show that many battles, that many fights and that much awesome.
Robb on the battlefield with Grey Wind is skipped.
Arya escaping from Harrenhal would have been epic.
But was never filmed.
I think content in the show is added to bring some emotion to the viewer.
Edmure isn't such a prat.
Jeyne doesn't play such a big part.

Yup the series is really simplified compared to the book... to the point where some of the storylines are really dumbed down. Also some pretty awesome characters are missing (particularly Strong Belwas)
I would agree with the rest. I haven't read the books, but already the tv series seems simplified and the universe has an entire history of awesome stories. The history of the targaryens could easily be a season.

The history of this world is ridiculous.
The Tagaryen story and the Doom of Old Valyria itself could easily be 2 complete series if George R.R. Martin would fill it out.
The simple idea of leaving Old Valyria and the conquest of Westeros could be amazing.
Imagine a story about Brandon the Builder. I would watch that.
Speaking of Targaryen.

what's the story behind the guy torturing Theon Grajoy? And why does he seem to reap so much pleasure in torturing him?
For those interested, the torturer is the son of Roose Bolton who is one of Robb Starks generals. When Winterfell was captured by Theon, Roose Bolton sent his son, Ramsay (the torturer) along with some men to retake the castle. When Theon's soldiers desert him, Ramsay takes Theon prisoner and starts to torture him. Ramsay's (assumed) motive is that his family is allied to the Starks and he is holding Theon as prisoner as a favour for the Starks.
Ramsay's importance in The Game Of Thrones intensifies as the story progresses. :D

So I got all those fails for attempting to clarifying things that ALREADY TOOK PLACE IN THE SERIES? Wow. General Bolton stated loud and clear [in Robb's tent] that HIS BASTARD SON WOULD TAKE BACK WINTERFELL, and Robb Stark ordered Bolton that every Ironborn could return home unharmed except Theon, that THEON IS TO BE TAKEN ALIVE. The Ironborn left, who else could have Theon? Oh it must have been some random stranger out of the blue who just happens to stumble into Winterfell right after the Ironborns leave, randomly kidnaps Theon and then proceeds to torture him. :rukidding:
Also, it's glaringly obvious that the storyline between Theon and his torturer is being built up to some kind of climax LOL.
Ronin

I don't think any of this happens during book 3 (which we're on right now in season 3 and will be for season 4). IIRC, dude takes back Winterfel but everyone thinks Theon is dead for a whole book or two before we find out he's alive. That's the reveal in the book.
The reveal on the show, because they can't just not have Theon on the show for a year or whatever for some reason, is that the guy is the Bastard of Bolton, Ramsay Snow, but what the fuck that's a stupid reveal because as FARMER pointed out above, you can sort of figure that shit out if you paid attention.
I don't think of anything said as a spoiler unless you're ONLY reading the books, not watching the show and you're not there yet...and there are probably not that many of you.
The buildup is to a different event involving Theon, I'm sure.

Farmer is right.
In the books, we don't find out about Theon until much later (book 4?).
To me, that was a holy crap moment and I had to read that page twice.
But in the show, they made it much easier to follow, but kept a bit of mystery there in the form of who is his captor.
The depth of how messed up this whole ordeal is actually implicit in the books. You know some serious stuff went down because you get into Theon's head, but just barely.
George RR Martin never actually gets into the gory details unlike the show.
But the end result is very clear, Theon gets a skull-f*cking 2 ways from Sunday. It's so bad that I felt Theon Turncloak deserved some mercy.
They are showing some of the gory bits on the show.
But are they seriously going to illustrate him getting broken down for the next 2 seasons?
Side note.
I can't wait until we meet the Sand Snakes.

Yes it's pretty stupid to post a spoiler from last night's show, unlabeled, then post a major book spoiler, also unlabeled.
Let's have a new rule:
All BOOK spoilers MUST be labeled.
You MUST label which book it is spoiling. To keep things simple, use "Book 1" or "Book 2" etc. If you forget, at least try to explain if the show will be spoiled or not as of the latest episode. We'll start off with more of a 'common sense' protocol than rather than having strict verbiage.
Spoiler tags are not necessary for the TV show. If you come into this thread without having watched the latest episode, it's your own damn fault. This prevents confusion - if you see a spoiler tag, assume that it is from a book, 100%. If it is labeled, you can decide whether you want to read it. If it is not labeled, report the post and we'll edit and give points.
Ronin
05-20-2013, 08:29 PM
You jerks are lucky I read this thread. I add quite a few spoiler tags or just delete + ban but it didn't occur to me that was a huge spoiler for people that aren't that far in the books.

It's hard to fit all the characters into an episode with all that goes on in book 3. Book 3 really is the climax of the first arc of the book...they could've possibly split it into 3 seasons even. So for those of you wondering about the dagger, you have to think about the setting for the books/show.
Westeros doesn't have communication tech. They send short messages by raven and even that is unreliable at times.
It is before the printing press so copies of books are written by scribes and there isn't a good number of them out there. Knowledge is not common.
In fact, unless you were raised by a noble family with money, you are illiterate. This is why you see Davos Seaworth learning to read.
This is the same reason you hope to gain favor with an noble house so your child can become a squire. Again, I point to Davos, a low born, who saved Stanis with his onions to become the Onion Knight, so the son of a knight can become a squire. That's why Davos' boys are literate and he is still not.
Now consider all that, PLUS it is a world where magic, grumpkins, dragons and wights have become extinct. Almost nobody remembers the true purpose of the wall, it was built to keep out the Wights and Others. In the time of the books, this has been long forgotten and people think the Wall is to keep out the Wildlings. This is why the Night's Watch is really only running on tradition and explains why only 3 of 19 Castles are manned, why they have few people and no resources.
So if they can forget about why The Wall was built, they can surely have forgotten about Dragonglass and it's usage.
In the book, Sam spends time in the library away from his brother and reads a lot. He was tasked with finding out about the others, and he had to dig through the archives to find the info. This is how we were introduced to the Dragonglass. It is that forgotten in a world where information and knowledge is already scarce.

I'm halfway through Dance with Dragons (the latest book) and it seems like that's not going to happen.
More spoilers if you want analysis and some details.
Martin has seem to write the Wolves as a companion to each character, it seems like the characters that follow the Stark path, northern traditions and honor, the character get to keep their Wolves. I think in some ways, he is using the presence of the Dire Wolves as the straight, honorable and Stark path that Ned tried to train into his children.
Rob has his, a loyal companion until the Red Wedding
Sansa lost hers early, right after the Joffrey/butcher boy incident. Like when she lost honor.
Arya lost hers the time she got sucked into Kings Landing and the Game of Thrones and political intrigue. Too early to bond with the Wolf I think? Later she's off on her own very un-Stark-like path. And we here rumors about a great She-wolf leading an enormous pack. readers are left questioning whether this is Nymeria.
Bran, led Winterfell, so he still as his. (not sure what will happen in the later half of this book).
Rickon, not sure how this one is going to turn out. There are no Rickon chapters.
Jon Snow, still on his path of honor and righteousness. Ghost with him often.
So that's my analysis. If Stark-y and honor, you get Wolf. If not, you don't.
If super-Stark-y, then Red Wedding.

Some epic shit happens, as you'd guess... also some total rage bait. Was about to finish reading the other day, then was like "oh the next chapter is my favourite character, guess I'll read one more"

Yeah... he takes a long time to write his books.
He likes to do book tours.
I am presuming he is in the deals to do a movie or searching for a partner, due to the success of LOTR.

Book 4 spoiler
I don't know if she was a hostage but she wasn't present at the wedding, I think. She was protected by the Blackfish and then eventually pardoned by the Iron Throne afterwards
And I thought so too. Roslin Frey looked hella cute...I thought all the Freys were supposed to be uggos.

Roslin was supposed to be the only attractive Frey in the book as well, IIRC.
Also in book 3, Jeyne wasn't at the wedding. Also in the TV show she wasn't even called Jeyne ;) In book 4:
Her mother gave her a miscarriage by potion, and tried to negotiate her off to the Lannisters. But Jaime let her go home instead as long as she did not marry within 2 years (because that could cause doubt about a potential son claiming the right to be king in the north
That spoiler is pretty safe to read, because the TV show character is dead anyway :) It just tells how they dealt with her character differently.

I was going to try to explain to non readers why the Red Wedding was pretty much the most despicable thing any character has done in ASOIF. There are certain things that are just known to be worse than anything else - killing your family members, sleeping with family members, etc. But the way it is written, killing a guest in your castle after they have eaten is pretty much the worst thing you can do. I came across this explanation which will save me some time.. CTRL+V
So, what was it that made the slaughter of King Robb, his mother, and men so especially reprehensible? The viewer got a subtle hint at this at the beginning of the episode, in the scene where Robb and his men shared "bread and salt" with Walder Frey (well return to that in a bit), and that was the invoking of the ancient custom of hospitality, "Guest Right"..
Guest Right, as I said is an ancient custom of gods and men (among all the religions of Westeros, not just the faith of the seven) dating back to the first men, that states if a guest shares food and drink under the roof of a host that the guest is offered protection by the host. Neither guest can harm host, nor host harm guest during the duration of the stay, and breaking of this custom of hospitality, as we saw tonight, is considered very egregious by all men and women of Westeros, and the person who violated "guest right" is considered accursed and loses any reputation they may have had... It's a big deal.. As I mentioned above, regardless of religion, regardless if you're a lowborn bastard, or the King himself, "Guest Right" is sacred. Walder Frey did not only commit a heinous act of treachery, but went far beyond that in the violating of "Guest Right"
Now, as I said above, Guest Right is automatically observed once the host shares his table with his guest, no matter what the meal or drink or who the host or guest is, but among the Lords and highborn families there are some traditional formalities associated with Guest Right. The first is what we saw in tonight's episode, Bread and Salt. Bread and Salt are traditionally presented to a guest in highborn circles as "officially" recognizing the custom of Guest Right, it may be presented to the guest and it may be requested by the guest, either way it is an official way to state among all parties that said law of hospitality is invoked. Guest Right ends when the guest takes their leave from the host, though there is some formality with that as well, traditionally the host will present his or her guests with "guest gifts" signifying that the custom Guest Right has ended, the guest usually also present the host with gifts as a tolkien of gratitude for protection while under the host's roof. Guest Right, can be denied if the host chooses, in Westerosi custom if a Lord bares naked steel across his lap when his guests arrive, it is a tolkien that Guest Right is being denied and they do not have "understood protection" while under his roof....
There have been a few examples of Guest Right being violated in the backstory of ASOIAF.. One example is that of the "Rat Cook of the Night Fort". The Rat Cook was a member of the Night's Watch when a King (prior to Aegon's Conquest) traveled to the Wall as a guest, the cook was wronged in some way by the king so the crow murdered the son of the king, and cooked the prince into a huge meat pie which he later fed to the guest King. Legend goes that the gods took such error with this that the cook was transformed into an enormous rat who could only ever eat his young.. A song about the Rat Cook is still sung around the seven Kingdoms as a reminder of the sacred law of Guest Right..
The second example that we've seen in which Guest Right was violated was when the men of the Night's Watch murdered Craster under his own roof, as we saw several episodes ago. This serves to remind that even though it was not "invoked" traditionally, it is still observed. There is a line in the books that didn't make it into the show that lends this credence. Mormont states that "There is no worse crime than murder at a host's dinner table" and that they're all accursed, another clear violation of guest right, and illustrates that, in this case, how the guests can be the ones who violate the observance.
And lastly is the example of what we saw tonight, the Red Wedding, all traditional observations were noted, bread and salt were exchanged and offered. (Though in the books Walder, was reluctant to give it to them when Robb and his banner-men arrived at the Twins) And Walder by murdering the King in the North, his mother, and his host has committed one of the most vile acts the people in Westeros can think of.
I hope you enjoyed this, and are a bit more enlightened on the subject of Guest Right, and why it is so vile that it was violated on tonight's episode.. Thanks to both Tower of the Hand, and Wiki of Ice and Fire for some of the finer details... until next week, happy... uh... nothing's ever going to be happy again. Have a week!

Keep in mind that the Freys aren't well regarded in the first place because...well...Walder is a dick.
I now understand why it takes so goddamn long to write these books. I don't know of anything else with such a richly imagined world. There's just so much and I don't even feel like we're reading the most epic parts of the story either. It's like we're just reading a totally normal era of time because the history of the ASOIAF world is so ridiculous. We don't even have fully grown dragons yet!
I mean, the War of the Five Kings sounds shitty compared to Aegon's Conquest and Robert's Rebelion. That shit was BAD ASS because everyone like Robert and Ned and the Dragon Prince and Jamie and whatever were all in their prime and being awesome. The start of GOT already had these dudes in retirement age and the most skilled warrior in the land is now...the Knight of Flowers...

This.
House Reyne was, if I remember, the second richest house in Westeros and rebelled against the Lannisters even though they were their bannermen...so they fucking killed them all and burned their shit.
What's even more amazing is that Roose Bolton noticed that Cat noticed...lol. He's like "Yep. You know what's about to happen..." and even shows her his chainmail.

Um Jaime is like 30-33 in these books. During Robert's rebellion I believe he was still a teenager (16-18). He's not the most skilled fighter now only because of losing his right hand.
