Is anyone else as excited for this HBO series for 2011 as I am? It's based on the popular novel series Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin, an adult based fantasy with hundreds of characters.
In the books each chapter plays from a different point of view of different characters. I've read every book at least 4 times, only 4 of 7 ridiculously thick novels have been released so far. I would highly recommend the books to most people. :D What I love about the story is with the multiple perspectives put into play there isn't too much black/white or good/bad. Magic is minimal, which keeps the story somewhat realistic.

I'm excited. I love the novels (so far, at least lol) and this looks to be quite promising. I'm glad that they're planning on keeping the series as faithful as possible to the books. Lots of intrigue and subplots happen throughout the series, so it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
Curious if it's just gonna be the first book or if they plan on adapting all of them...

I"m a huge fan of the novels and so excited about the series. Also the next book will be out in June just as the series ends!
I'm very curious how they handle some of the plot elements given some of them are even a bit... squicky? harsh? for HBO. I hope they don't flinch away from taking the subject matter head on though.
I'm also looking forward to Camelot on Starz

You should really try to get into the book. It is amazing. Even if the show is a good watch, the book has so many intricate little things and side stories that I really doubt would fit into the show. :)

They've cut out a fair bit of the story so far, though admittedly it'd be pretty hard to actually add a lot of it in.
Like the books, Tyrion and Jon Snow are my favorite characters. Those two were portrayed pretty well considering how I imagined them to be. Others, though... eh. Daenerys and Jamie/Cersai, among others, I imagined as looking completely different. I also imagined Kings Landing as a much more majestic place than what the interior shots are showing it as.
Ah well.
As for the lack of action in Ep2, it's still in the plot development stage. Judging from what they're taking and cutting from the book, I'd say Ep3 will have some action in it (the Hand's Tournament).
On the plus side, HBO has already renewed the show for a second season. From the names of each episode in Season 1, I'm guessing that the second season will follow the second half of the book.

Holy shit, the next book A Dance With Dragons has just been finished. Too bad we still have to wait until July to get the book. Can't wait!
So far I'm enjoying the series, although it doesn't exactly feel as captivating as reading a book. One thing is true though, I hate Sansa in the show just as much as I did in the book. What a bitch.

WTF? They made Ser Loras and Lord Renly lovers?
I haven't watched it yet (still downloading slowly), but... WTF? That's not in the book.
Did some googling and other people seemed to be onto a gay theory of Renly and Loras way before any talk of a television show being made.
Rainbow guard, huh.

Best role by far imo is Aria Stark, she plays the role perfectly
TheNewGirl
05-16-2011, 11:14 AM
Aria and Ned are both played perfectly.
I think that's both because they have fantastic actors but also because their scenes are most often lifted word for word out of the book and they stay truest to the nature of their characters in the book.
To me when the camera stays close to the POV characters the stories generally very good (BtW the Sky cells.... exactly how I imagined them), but it's when the camera veers away from them and fills in stuff that was never covered in the books that I find the show often stumbles a bit.

I agree that production in set and costume design is great and the actors all do amazing jobs but don't you sort of feel like the scale is a little small? Why does everything happen in small rooms and locales?
It looks beautiful but I would love some sweeping landscape for that LOTR feel.

The kid is most likely the son of the queen and her brother, the douche that killed Ned's men in the previous episode...at least that's what the show implies. I guess children ALWAYS take their father's hair color in this universe.

There are a total of 4 books out so far, with the 5th coming out this July. Each book is huge and could have been easily split up into two or three smaller books.
If you're thinking about getting the books because you like the show, just do it. There is so much stuff going on in the story that it is impossible for them to stuff one whole book into a single season without cutting out a lot of content. I am biased towards the story, because I enjoy reading the books but I do believe that I enjoy watching it much more and am able to see things that a newb to the story would not.
Another thing is that, even though it's HBO and an adult themed show - there are a lot of things from the book that I don't think they'd dare put on TV.
Viserys' "crowning" was far more satisfying in the book.

You all should read the books if you love the show. This is one of my favorite series of books of all time (and the next one comes out in June/July shortly after the first season ends) and perhaps one of the most faithful adaptations (with a few exceptions) if a book to screen that I've ever seen.
As far as I'm concerned, Dany's brother getting his "crown" is when shit gets real and the real underbelly of the story starts to show.
Matlock> They've been more unflinching then I expected really so far. But we'll see how they handle next season.
Hondaracer> The first season is book one, season two will be the first half of book 2. Season 3 will be the back half of book 2 and possibly some of book 3.
The books are:
Game of Thrones
Clash of Kings
Storm of Swords
*Feast for Crows
*Dance with Dragons (coming out this summer).
* These two books actually take place simultanously in the timeline of the series.
They're all available at Kobo for ebook.
I've been re reading the series since the show started and it's an interesting exercise, seeing exactly what they changed and omitted but more then anything I'm impressed by how much of it comes directly off the pages of the book.

No. Not really. But in the book they go into a lot more detail about Ned researching the blood line and finding instances of other pairings between Lannisters and Bartheons.
In Ned's own family it's clear that most of the kids (besides Arya and Jon) look more like Cat then him, at least in the books it is. Casting choices make that a little less clear in the series.
In fact it stresses in the book that Arya is more like Jon then she is like the rest of her siblings, a fact that probably contributes to why her story goes the way it does as opposed to the way Sansa's does (or Robb or Bran's).

maybe it was the volume as prior to watching the show I saw a table of all the characters and their family ties, similar to the one posted here and thought fuck this might be tough. But I was actually surprised how well they brought each of the characters into the show... Do I remember all their names? fuck no but I do remember their alliances and where they came from.

It's interesting that the more "civilized" parts of the world bicker and betray each other but the Dothraki seem to have a real sense of honor, even though they won't hesitate to kill each other. They look like they have each other's back against everyone else...maybe because Khal Drogo is a fucking awesome leader.

In the later books they actually spend more time beyond the wall and it's interesting. Though I don't think they ever get up into the glaciers, but definitely to the other places listed on the map north of the wall.
Later in the books you also get to find out more about what's happening in the far far south and in the other free cities and you get a MUCH more complete picture as to what the world is like.

Khal Drogo and, because of the last episode, Robb Stark are now my favourites. I can't wait to see what Robb does when he meets with the Lannister armies. I'm also confused about where the Dothraki army is coming from on the map? Are they advancing from the south? I can also see that the circumstances in the North, with its ominous and beyond the grave atmosphere, is quickly becoming very intriguing. I've liked Jon Snow from the get go too.

I'm continually amazed by how perfect Arya is. She's EXACTLY how I pictured her and that scene with her dancing teacher went down pretty much exactly how I imagined it.
This ep was written by George RR Martin himself and I really think it shows. Both the fact that it's his book and he knows the characters best, and that he started his career in tv writing, he understands how to pace and reveal things perfectly.
I hope next season he pens a few more eps himself. If him or Jane Espenson would write every episode (hers was The Golden Crown, she's one of my hands down favorite TV writers) the series would be even more full of awesome than it already is.

Shit hits the fan...everyone is fighting and killing each other. Everyone puts aside their differences and fights them together.

Some of the Point of View characters from the first book (Jon, Bran, Sansa, Cat, Ned, Arya, Tyrion and Danny - iirc are the first book ones) are still alive at the end of the 5th one.
Secondary characters though... Yeah don't get attached. In every one of the books they manage to slaughter who ever my favorite secondary character at the time was. Like Arya's dancing teacher in the first one.
And just because someone becomes a POV character, that doesn't mean they're any safer than they were before either (as he adds new point of view chars to replace the casualties of the previous books).

Yeah there was a big alteration in Dany's story. Not really in what happened but why it happened (and through the whole thing there's been more of those in Dany's story line then anyone else's).
In the book she totally goes into the fire cause she's grieving and fully expects to die. Other wise she would have had to go to the mountain and live with the other widows of the horse lords for the rest of her days. She decided burning, as long as she burned the bitch who killed her husband with her was preferable.
I also think the scene with Sansa and Joeffery actually was taken from the second book.

I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed that they haven't shown any of the battles in the show so far. A lot of the characters have been cut out too, though I can understand that. I'm vaguely surprised they introduced Lancel as I thought the Cersai/Lancel bit didn't start until the second book. I'm also glad they let The Hound keep his understated "kindness." Maester Pycelle's vigorous/decrepit acting seems to be new, though. However, they managed to make the ending of the season much more epic than the book (it ends on the "King of the North" scene).
As for Sansa, it's not that she's dumb; in fact, in the books she has quite a bit of internal turmoil between killing Joffrey/running away, and being the "perfect princess" she was raised up to be. She's the exact opposite of Arya, basically.
What I'd love to see in the second season is have them make everything a bit bigger (as Skinny had mentioned earlier in the thread). The book is written in such a large scale a la Lord of the Rings and seeing the characters interact in only small rooms with only a few people standing around makes it feel almost claustrophobic.
All that said, I'm looking forward seeing Jaqen and Halfhand introduced, as well as seeing Tyrion as the Hand of the King.
I just thought of something... did they introduce Meera and Jojen in this season?

I also think the scene with Sansa and Joeffery actually was taken from the second book.
I was disappointed that they cut out the scene where she gave her bride gifts to the blood riders and promised Jorah a sword of Valyrian steel asking them for their allegiance. I found the final scene rather anticlimatic in comparison to the book. Wasn't she also bald after surviving the fire?
The scene with Sansa and Joffrey was from the second book and I believe the heads were supposed to be covered in tar?
Also, Varys and Littlefinger don't need all of these "could of happened" scenes.

It seems as if they really did mix up some of the second book stuff just to make things seem more interesting.
I really hope they get more $$$ from this first season to up the budget on the next season. I think money was the main thing holding them back from showing more battles.
Blackwater could be amazing if they manage to pull it off.

I agree with what Lomac said about the Hound. I really like his character in the book. He does some fucked up shit because he's ordered to but there's a sense of honor about him too.

The first book ends with the Dany scene. And it is totally and amazingly epic in the book. The goodwife is screaming and dying for like 4 pages. They go on about the hatching of the dragons for several pages and the Khal's riders stay and pledge themselves to her. It's an AMAZING scene. I wish I could type out the whole thing for you but it's way too long (since it goes on for about 10 pages). Here's the last paragraph of the first book though which generally goes with the gist of the show though they skip the whole part about her her interaction with the blood riders (and yeah her hair all burns off).
Daenerys Targaryen rose to her feet, her black hissed, pale smoke venting from its mouth and nostrils. The other two pulled away from her breasts and added their voices to the call, translucent wings unfolding, stirring the air and for the first time in hundreds of years the night came alive with the music of dragons.
That's why I consider the first book to be a prologue. Cause THERE I feel is where the story really begins.
And Jaqen H'ghar is, besides the Hound, my favorite love to hate character in the series.

For the majority of the book, yes. However you'll come across references to scenes that were either deleted in the show or events that played out differently.

The series stuck very close to the books. But as the book is about 800 pages they DID cut a lot out. I would recommend reading it over. You can probably read it very quickly having seen the show, but there will be a lot of 'ah-hah' moments as in the book you get to know what the point of view characters are thinking, not just what they're doing. So there is a great deal more insight into their motives (ESPECIALLY for Tyrion and Ned).
In the book you also get a better idea of some of the secondary characters (Especially The Hound, Littlefinger, Renly, Osha and Jorah). I think this is where you get cheated the most in the series since they barely have time to develop the huge cast of main characters, the secondary tier gets neglected.

I didn't really get that from the show. I thought that part was pretty accurate. I'm pretty sure she knew about her fire tolerance from the thing with the eggs in the fire.
The book does say...
...all her hair burned off. I would've liked to have seen the scene with the riders pledging themselves to the first female Khal though.

I don't think that's why she went in at all. I got the impression that she was drawn to the beauty of the flames. As Ronin mentioned, I think the book also alluded to the fact that she had a sense of her invulnerability to fire.

The whole story is full of mistakes which lead to unmeasurable consequences and that is what make the characters human. No one is perfect, everyone has weaknesses to some degree.

what doesn't make sense? Cuz fire didn't burn her hair off? So it wouldve somehow made more sense to you if her hair was gone but the rest of her isn't burnt?

I know I'm being anal, but It bothers me because it is inconsistent with the book. Secondly, it would have been more believable for me if her hair was burnt off. For all we know, she could have just stripped down and rolled around in the ashes.

It seems the series gets much more into the magic and sorcery part of fantasy. Is that where this is headed? Like...people shooting fireballs and shit? No spoilers...just say yes, no, sort of, etc. I can't say that's been my favorite part of the books so far...although it might be awesome. Honestly, I enjoy the politics and conversations, trying to figure out who's backstabbing who. And the history...I wouldn't mind some kind of history book just straight up telling what happened in the years that preceeded.
And GRRM is 62. What the fuck happens if he dies before the series is over...!?
Also...starting A Storm of Swords! :fuckyea:

This book does head into the direction of the super natural where some form of magic does exist. However, this is not Harry Potter. No instant spell casting of any sort.
If GRRM dies we are all screwed unless we can some how tap into his cadaver's skull and siphon out all of the data.

Also, look into The Hedge Knight novella/comic book series about Dunk and Egg. It's a side story that takes place many years before the novel and reading them won't ruin any of the novels, because it takes place in the past. You can "download" them if you know where to look.

Ya, there's really no Gandalf/Harry Potter -esque magic happening. In fact, the "magic" doesn't really start happening until the latest couple books and even then it's more along the lines of predicting the future than anything else, though wait for Stannis and whatshername. I got so addicted after reading GoT, I watched the HBO series AGAIN. They did such a good job of casting the characters. And most of the things they changed were minor and suitable for a TV series. What I didn't like is how the marginalized the dire wolves, and Rickon. That kid scares me. Also, they made 'hinted' things really obvious, like Renly, and Greyjoy's feelings for the Starks. But I guess it will all come together in the next seasons.

They upped the ages by all of the minor characters by between 2 and 4 years. This was done cause GRRM asked them too first of all (he says his biggest regret was not making the kids older. He'd initially planned a large time jump early in the series but then realized it wasn't doable. The first 6 books of the series cover only a little over a year.) but also because the teens in the series are sexually active and such at an age that can not be portrayed on TV. Dany's only 14 in the books, in the TV series she's 18. Rob, Jon and Theon are likewise, in the books 16-14 when the series starts. They bumped them all up to 17-19 as well. Rikkon was only 2 in the books and Bran 6. But they needed actors who could handle MUCH more mature rolls so knocked them up to 6 for Rikkon and 9 for Bran. And so on.
I'm totally cool with this particular change since it makes the characters more the way they were portrayed in the books rather then the biological age they were in the books.
