Just got email from Subway. $25.00 for a whole month of 50% off footlongs. Footlong Pass is what it's called. Not the first time it has been offered, but first I've heard of it. The passes go on sale for MVP members on the 20th of May. 50% off a footlong every day in June.
If you're really into Subway, I guess it's a decent deal. For me, just getting BOGO deals once in a while is good enough.

Would have loved this Subway deal back in my single days. There was a time when I was on the road a lot, and would be having Subway at least twice a week.
Safeway is doing a toonie Tuesday type of deal where they only charge you $2 for 2 pieces of fried chicken (1 thigh, 1 drumstick). You can also get an order of (spicy fried) potato wedges for $2 as well. Size-wise, it is nothing to write home about, and they use quite a bit of powder (corn starch?) to coat the chicken. But for $2 in this day and age, I am not going to complain about a single thing at all. It is glorious.
(Interestingly, the price tag they stick on your package is still going to show $4.19 or something. But the discount gets applied at the checkout.

This is not my picture, but we are looking at $4's worth of food here.
I've been having the chicken for the past few Tuesdays as $2 for a drumstick + thigh is really a loss leader for Safeway.
The chicken itself is no better or worse than KFC / Church's, but even KFC Tuesdays are like $4 now, where the pieces are slightly smaller than what Safeway gives you, and you get at most <1/3 of the fries compared to what you get from Safeway.

That's always been the strategy from AYCE owners lol. Delay, delay, delay and suddenly your table is at it's time limit.
"I'll go check on your order"
*order arrives with half of it missing*
"Last call didn't arrive? Oh no, that's a shame, let me check"
Better pay your bill and gtfo so they can repeat this again for the next table.

Friends who tried the Aberdeen AYCE also experienced worse-than-usual order delays (even for AYCE standards).
I joined them a second time with a reservation right at opening hour and service was fine - the restaurant is likely too understaffed for the volume of orders, than intentionally slowing orders down. Quality is pretty solid for their asking price.

Honestly I don’t know how buffets exist anymore in almost any form, I guess nostalgia but even the Vegas ones are dieing
I could pack away some food, especially when drinking, but usually after like a plate, I’m feeling pretty good and I’m a bigger guy but just feel fucking disgusting on the rare occasion I go to AYCE sushi etc.
Yet people go to these buffets and just pack away the food lol.. unless you’re like 400+ pounds I don’t know how people do it.
And it’s not even really about “getting your moneys worth” to me, like a Vegas buffet I’d rather just spend $100+ and go have a single dish somewhere else

100% agree.
On a separate note, looks can be deceiving. Back in highschool, we'd go AYCE sushi because, well, highschool. The girls can pack away way more than any of the guys. It was honestly pretty impressive and physical size has zero bearing on how much you can eat.

Uhhh excuse me, you can’t “waste” food at uncle Willy’s as it’s basically garbage.
Salty garbage too.
And it’s not even really about “getting your moneys worth” to me, like a Vegas buffet I’d rather just spend $100+ and go have a single dish somewhere else
i try to explain this logic to my wife and her rebuttal is that at an AYCE you get the opportunity to try a bit of different types of food vs a single dish
Good god no, skip Uncle Willy's. We went a year ago with the wife's friend's when had the same idea for a nostalgic cheap buffet with all our kids.
It was gross. Everyone agreed it sounded good on paper but yeah, never again.
didnt we go together like 5 years ago with all the kids? at the time i didnt think it was so bad because i just ate the same 3-4 things until i was full, and all of those things were like 4/10 at best, but my expectations were 2/10 so i didn't hate it lol.

Lol, I went to Uncle Willy's in January for nostalgic reasons.
The last time I had went was in 2011 baked as hell with some buddies.
Honestly was better than I expected and the place was pretty clean.
The fried chicken was great.
Solid 3/5.

it was to meet all the highschool friends and most of them had kids already, so it was an ideal place haha.. it was dead in there too, go figure.

I also enjoy AYCE not to stuff myself but for variety LOL. If I try to min/mas I'll just try to stuff myself.. and that hurts nowadays. And I feel awful.
I had dinner at Vancouver Club the other night. Never been. It was pretty good and so I stuffed myself. And I felt real fucking sick after. Tho it might've been cause I had been up for 38 hours by that point, my last meal was 24 hours ago, and my first meal was a Dark n Stormy followed by truffle fries. Damn those fries were good.

i always knew it was richmond sushi but i guess they renamed it richmond ninkazu now.
i give it a 7 out of 10, not sure if it was worth the $44 but i would go again.
So Richmond Ninkazu was across from Aberdeen originally - in the Lido plaza. That is now another AYCE BBQ place. Mid and hella delayed btw. Richmond Ninkazu moved to Richmond Sushi's spot, also somehow it's worse than before but they were able to expand. I would not go again.
Anyone remember the AYCE sushi place that used to be at corner of Cooney/Lansdowne rd? Tokyo something something. It's long gone now, but it was sort of my gateway sushi restaurant experience here in Richmond.
Being a white boy in Calgary, all I ever ate at Japanese restaurants there were teriyaki dishes. This place was where I was finally willing to try California roll and salmon sashimi for the first time lol. Granted, I was still a kid at the time.
Tokyo Joe. This place was awesome. Very few people remember it but this was my best AYCE experience.
I have this theory that AYCE only exists in a recession/bad economy where consumers typically eat value > quality, but in Vancouver, because we're bougie.. we get premium AYCE which can be $100 at some places.

06-01-2025, 01:46 PM
I think Tokyo Joe was the one that came afterwards... The one I'm think of had a Chinese name. Something along the lines of Tokyo No.1 or something like that? It was on the inside corner of that mall and had private booths (perfect for taking extra food home lol).

We went to Tokyo Ichiban when I was maybe 8? When my parents told me we were going to Tokyo Ichiban it was a cause for celebration. The oyster motoyakis, the unlimited sashimi. I still remember fondly the time we had lobster sashimi, it was so good.
I still order oyster motoyakis for old time sake. Not so much because they are so good but it's just a childhood treasure. The AYCE changed the motoyaki sauce overtime, then it was no longer whole oysters, and then they started doing it in the stupid metal tart trays. I'm going to be 80 and I'll be telling my grandkids (if I ever get grandkids) that I used to eat these by the dozen.
As I got older I started going to the one on Granville and 41st. I don't remember what it's called in English, just the Chinese name, it was "1 ping"

It was $29.99/person for lunch, no limitations, but mandatory 15% tip. Food was actually decent, better than what I remember from Top Gun group or Fish on Rice back in the day.

citymarket has several locations, but that's the only one I've seen with extensive eat-in/take-out hot food options. They built it specifically for the downtown office lunch crowd. The other locations have the usual supermarket fare.
This location also used to have a really good butter chicken, rice and naan option for $9 but management got rid of it after a few months, probably because it was too popular.

I don't get why Vancouver can't do food courts properly? It's either shitty stuck-in-the-80s-chains food courts like we have at Pac Centre or Metrotown, or the aforementioned Asian food courts which, let's face it, intimidate non-Chinese speakers.
I was in Christchurch, NZ a couple years ago. A city 1/4 the size of Vancouver and even they managed to have a "cool", funky, multicultural food hall (https://neatplaces.co.nz/places/christchurch/eat-drink/the-little-high-eatery) right in the centre of the city.

you know what's funny? I've introduced so many non-Chinese to Kam Ho (Admiralty Centre) that the owners sometimes ask "are you [spoon.ek9]'s friend?"
I even send them the order via message and they show the cashier to get what they want lol. Also, it's not written in Chinese. It's just my mix of english/canto pinyin and gets the job done.
What really sucks in Calgary is that food courts like Yaohan, Aberdeen, Admiralty, etc pretty much don't exist anywhere there despite the large Asian community. I think there was one Asian-ish mall that had perhaps 4-5 restaurants in the hallway outside of a grocery store. That's it. Everything else is spread out across the city. no idea why i would be wanting to eat wonton / bbq duck at 3 AM, but it woudl be the only place to go.
honestly, i go there religiously when i have a 7 AM flight and woudl do my take out there during my taxi ride to YVR. Eating a decent meal than crappy air canada 18 dollar breakfast sandwich is always a win.
the last time i was at crystal there was a cybertruck in the parkade trying to navigate around the turns... what a moron.

Safeway joined the train of squeezing every ounce of profit out of their “deals”
They used to have the best sandwich deals in the game, then they started giving you half chicken breasts, charging for extra veggies etc. now I don’t even go there anymore. Nice system
was it safeway that had that homer simpson sized sandwich for like $10 back in the day. you could eat that for weeks
Hondaracer
06-10-2025, 01:20 PM
They still have those lumberjack sandwiches which are still kind of a deal
But the fresh made sandos from the deli you could get a foot long on like 3-5 different types of fresher baked breads, actual fresh made chicken breasts, fresh cut veggies etc. as many as you like for like $8
Now the 6 inch is $8 and they charge for additional veggies and “premium” toppings

Ok joking aside, pho beef is pho beef. I'm generalizing but the taste/flavour is immaterial. It's like me telling you all Lunch Lady is worth a 2 hour wait and $35 price tag for pho. Just no.
But holy jeez, the broth, the noodles, I don't know what it is about Calgary Vietnamese places, but it just sucks ass. Are they trying to just fool the locals with their half ass broth? Do they not care about the quality or take pride in their signature soup? You go to these "top rated" 5 star Google Yelp blogger-reviewed places and I can't help but painstakingly go through this weak ass pho. I think gruel from a refugee centre might taste better.

Back by popular demand, for 1 day, we’re inviting you to drop off any kind of household junk you’ve got at the Still Creek Works Yard—even items we don’t normally accept! On June 14, bring your hard-to-dispose items to the Still Creek Works Yard (across from the Eco-Centre) and we’ll recycle what we can, and divert the rest into the appropriate waste stream at no charge.
This is the perfect time to get rid of some of that clutter around your home, including items that would normally need to be taken to a Metro Vancouver facility and be charged a fee for disposal. Bring us items like:
Mattresses
Old furniture
Scrap metal and appliances (big and small)
Bagged garbage
Recyclables (cardboard, mixed paper, mixed containers, etc.)
Paints, solvents, aerosol cans
Electronics
Batteries (household, car)
Many other categories of household junk!

Just heard a brilliant idea! You know how certain places give you birthday goodies, like SB, Cartem's, Tim Horton's, De Dutch, Chat Time, Booster Juice, etc. This only works for apps and not when you have to show ID. Put different dates throughout the year as your birthday, then you can enjoy a goodie, once a month or whenever. Apps usually send you a code or something, no ID needed. Plus, who can use all the free drinks, etc. all on one day, some will go to waste as you can't possibly consume all the free stuff. Why didn't I think of this ??!!
Here's a list of all the freebies on your birthday, which is show ID and which is app based.

I have Sapporo Ichiban that expired a few months ago, no issues. After about 6 months, the noodles start to go funky. Nothing unhealthy, but that oily smell............... nuff said.
There's enough salt to keep that stuff in stasis!
Only thing to worry about is the overall humidity where it's being stored which would impact the noodles' integrity but that's still a long time away. Just don't keep it in a shed underneath a leaky deck.

99 cent small Frosty @ Wendy's until Aug 17
A little too late, but if you go to Cavendish Farms website and search coupons, they have some $2.00 off coupons. This week, until end of today, bag of frozen Cavendish fries are $3.00 at Superstore. Price thing says price match, so some other store has it for that much, too.
I printed a couple of each and thought, no problem print some later. Nope, they keep track. One of them I printed out three copies. No issues. Anyhow a bag of frozen fries for a buck is pretty decent. According to their site, you can get more coupons in a month. Print and wait for some store to have them on sale again. I got onion ring variety.
One coupon per purchase. I had two varieties, so got a pair of bags.
