trust me on this, a semi-22lr gets real boring real fast.
you will not find a quality large calibre rifle for 399.99. my CZ bolt action 22 was in the 500 range after taxes and i dont regret spending a single dollar. i highly recommend going with the ruger over the other brands if you wanna go semi. again make consideration for a bolt action 22.
sounds like you were in cadets?
I guess a semi .22 might get boring fast. I don't know, still thinking about it. Maybe a Savage bolt-action or a Marlin?
Yes, I understand about not finding a great quality rifle for $399, but spending that on a 10/22 sounds a lot to me. :(
Yep, was in Cadets.

Well only the takedown is that much. A regular 10/22 in synthetic/birch stock is around ~260 ish.
I just got my license as well in january and did a lot of research. The bolt was also my favorite gun in class.
I believe the Savage mark II or the marlin were the best budge bolts for the money. Also, you should join canadian gun nutz forum if you haven't already. A lot of useful info there.

my suggestion would be the savage mark II FVT.
its a bolt action with iron sights and comes with a detachable box mag. perfect setup to learn on.

Im sure you'll be happy with the savage.
You'll be able to shoot on the iron sights and then eventually scope it and learn about all the things involving zeroing scopes and what not. CCI shotshells will be good for dispatching pests and the cb shorts are awesome and quiet enough to shoot without hearing protection.

just thought i'd throw this in here. went to my brothers vegas bachelor weekend. we went to a firing range, "battlefield vegas" which i could not say enough good things about. not only completely professional but really nice people. anyways. because we were a large group, they threw in a bunch of extra's too. im still waiting on a few pictures but i'll give you what i got.
i got to fire a bunch of magazines out of a warm up glock 17, then an mp5 which i had some jamming issues with. the classic UZI 9mm with stock. a tactical m4 which kicks really hard, but very controllable. then i was given a vintage ak47 with a folding metal stock. that one bruised my right shoulder a pretty good amount. everyone else got the classic wooden stock AK. then i finished it off with the belt fed RPD which i just went full rambo with. epic.
a few of the other guys went for different packages, which included desert eagles, a few rifles, a couple 12ga with buck/slugs etc etc. for my brother though, as the bachelor, they threw in pretty much every gun we used, as well as a grenade launcher (with concussion round, since we're indoors), an automatic rifle i can't remember the name of, bear with me. and no joke, a mini gun. we called ahead and reserved that one for him. it lasted maybe 10 seconds? we stitched two belts in at once so that would have been about 200rounds. i *literally* had tears in my eyes instantly. i have never been around so much power in my life. truly epic.

I guess a semi .22 might get boring fast.
I have a pretty unique arsenal of guns, and I still bring my Ruger 10/22 with me every time I hit the range. It's just too much fun to high speed plink my target tree at 100 yards. Even better with buddies when you put $5 down for the fastest shooter.
I have about 4 hours of sanding and polishing work on my 10/22 and enjoyed every minute of it. The stock is an archangel deluxe, whistle pig barrel, and lots of little bits and pieces that make it a rip to shoot. It's accurate with most ammo too, which makes it all the better.
I may not bring my 870, or the sks, or the 30-06, or the pistols, or the bullpups, but I always bring the 10/22.
Just something to think about.
awesome I've always wanted to shoot a mp5 and AK
agreed!
The AK is a classic, while a suppressed mp5 is something that you could talk about for years to come!
:lol
One final thought;
Dear federal government.
Where is my 9mm regi!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I want to shoot, but I can't legally carry the new pistol until the letter comes. It's like having a passive/aggressive waiting period.

Did you run across a CZ455? Keep in mind it has interchangeable barrels for 22LR, 17HMR and 22WMR. Might be an option if you don't want a dedicated 22LR now and think you really might want a 17HMR later.

I was handling a few .17HMR guns today and I think I have talked myself out of getting one - I don't see the need.
The .17WMR is more of a small game/varmint hunting round. It pushes about 1000 fps faster than a standard 22LR so the damage to a coyote or raccoon pretty much guarantees a kill. Something that can't be said when using a 22LR.
Unless you have a need for a gun like that, just move along.
Did you run across a CZ455? Keep in mind it has interchangeable barrels for 22LR, 17HMR and 22WMR. Might be an option if you don't want a dedicated 22LR now and think you really might want a 17HMR later.
What a cool idea.
Cabelas has them for $600, not including the other receivers though. It might actually be cheaper to buy a Marlin 17HMR, a mossberg 715 plinkster, and a random 22WMR over the cz.
The cz is a nice package though.
Yes I actually think its a Barrett, I'm no longer friends with the guy that owns it but the guys he has a crazy. 50 cal desert eagle hand gun, automatic 12 gauge and others I don't even know the names
The guy must be a beast. The Barrett rifle is almost 30 lbs, while the Desert Eagle is 5 lbs with a loaded mag. I held one when I was at International and couldn't believe how massive it is.
Only Vinnie Jones can make it look small in comparison. Or maybe Ah-nuld.

Well, listening to hypa and others go on about their 10/22's, I swung by Italian Sporting Goods on my way to work just to "check out" what they have and I ended up walking out of there with a nice Ruger of my own:
Ruger® 10/22® Distributor Exclusives Autoloading Rifle Model 11113 (http://www.ruger.com/products/1022DE/specSheets/11113.html)
http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq314/Zedbra/MIsc/Private/2014-06-19181822_zps80296cb1.jpg (http://s459.photobucket.com/user/Zedbra/media/MIsc/Private/2014-06-19181822_zps80296cb1.jpg.html)
It came with a Butler Creek mag seeing as how the stock Ruger 25 round mags are now prohibited and I also bought a 110 round GSG mag for it. The BC mag jammed every other shot - I only ran two loads through it. The GSG mag gave me 2 misfeeds the first load, one stovepipe the second load, and then it ran flawless on the third. Only thing I didn't expect is that those mags make it impossible to use a bag - they are too tall.
Here's my target with the third 110 round mag - I did this both standing and sitting, free holding the gun w/o props or bipod. I need to get my sight down some more, as it was shooting low. But this is all 110 rounds:
http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq314/Zedbra/MIsc/Private/2014-06-19183119_zpsd0c8b780.jpg (http://s459.photobucket.com/user/Zedbra/media/MIsc/Private/2014-06-19183119_zpsd0c8b780.jpg.html)
So after about 500 rounds through the 10/22 I decided to go over to the long range and test out that Parker-Hale 1200C 7mm MAG I was given. Our range requires you bring your own targets and stands, and I didn't feel like waiting for the green light to set up in the rain, so I decided just to burst a few rounds in the prone to see how I handle the punch.
There was only myself and then a group of 10 people there doing some kind of biathlon training class with their expensive little rim fire guns that make almost no sound. Well, I let off my first round and it thunders the whole range and echoes off the hills here in Squamish. The entire group ran out of the range as fast as they could. I noticed what happened, and went outside to ask why they left? Well, they weren't wearing any ear protection (though they are supposed to at our range) and so they were now putting in ear plugs.
That made me chuckle a little, told them I would make it quick anyways because at $3 a bullet and no target, I just want to squeeze about 6 shots out today.

No I don't mind - it's easy enough info for anyone to find:
10/22 Destroyer w/ATI folding stock and BC 25 mag = $499.00
Bushnell 1-4.5 x 32 scope = $84.00
Rings = $30.00
GSG Mag = $98.00
Then I bought a bunch of other odds and ends I needed. Walked out $1200 lighter. Italian Sporting Goods mounted the scope for free (normally charge $40), and I got 5-10% off the accessories because I am a BCWF member. Overall, I liked dealing with Carlo there. Went back this morning, bought more ammo and a bipod, plus a few other things and that was $425. Fun little sport - it likes to play with my wallet
I will be joining a couple of hunters this year that always travels up to the Cariboo - but they usually go just northwest of Prince George.

Ugh, that's expensive for just the gun. Is it because of the stock and tactical style furniture? Is there anything special about the action or barrel to make it that expensive?
They're probably hunting in the Fraser Lake/Fort St James/Vanderhoof area, there's a lot of that going around there.

$499 isn't a bad price for that gun.
The standard 10/22 ranges anywhere from $299-$349, if you can find them in stock. I had to wait 6 weeks for mine to come in. Tacticool stocks are $100-$180, then you have the 16" barrel and muzzle break included. All said and done, it's pretty much where a tacticool 10/22 should be, all without having to bed the receiver in the stock yourself because Ruger already did it.
Honestly, with what I've spent on my 10/22, I should have gone with one of the Tac Sol prebuilt guns. I think the only stock part left on mine is the receiver housing. But it's so much fun.

The tree is for .22 plinking, while the gong is AR500 steel and can be used with .22 all the way up to 50 cal. I use 5.56 and .223 on it, along with the odd 12 guage slug. Those hit really hard though.......

^ I thought the same way about the pricing. The stock is $129-$149 aftermarket but this one is stamped by Ruger, already fir, short barrel with muzzle break - the price seemed right. I was looking at another 10/22 with a laser and it was $429 and a Takedown was similar in price, but thought this one was nice and light, would do for blasting fast rounds and my kids will love it when they are old enough (also part of the light decision). Overall, I thought longer term and why not?
I am needing to find collapsing target frames that I can take to my range. They supply nothing at our range and you have to take in and take out everything. Also, we can't use metal targets (but can use metal target frames). What shops might sell frames that are 6' tall, will hold a large paper target?

I guess so... Better start saving up. :concentrate:
Oh! I dropped by my local gun/hunting store today, and I tried out a Savage Mark II - not sure which version it was. But that's one nice .22! The Mossberg feels fine without the cheesy 25-round mag - the mag rattles in the plastic "AR"-style housing and feels super cheap/plasticy. But it feels light and nowhere near as solid as the Ruger 10/22 or the Savage Mark II they had there. There was also a Marlin XT-22R and that was one nice gun... smexy with the stainless barrel.

Where can you get those AR500 targets and stands locally?
About how much do they run?
I ordered mine from a shop in Ladner called Taccessories.
Here's the link to their target page.
Targets : Taccessories Canada, Tactical Hunting and Shooting Accessories, Grips, Stocks, Knives, Flashlights, Firearm Accessories (http://taccessories.ca/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=27&zenid=ad55dba3300f38f7e357647dc9b361bd)
couldn't you make your own with pvc or similar? would take two seconds to set up and should be somewhat sturdy, as long as your target hangs with steel wire. stress from impact onto the target shouldn't traslate onto the frame itself.
I learned that there is a ton of force acting on the target and frame when it's hit with a round. I've had pieces of FMJ embedded in the steel legs, and shredded the airplane spec wire with flak. PVC wouldn't last very long seeing as my steel legs are taking a beating.
Imho, use steel legs and chain for the AR500 target. Or snag one of those self healing targets from International. They're sexy, and for $150 they're around the same price as mine cost.
That plinking tree is a great idea originalhypa, is that a custom build too then?
Thanks man!
I grabbed this from Canadian Tire last year. Probably the best $79 I've spent (other than ammo :D). It's only good for rimfire, but it's a lot of fun for the 10/22, and the 1911-22.
yeah you can buy that target at International and there's a sale next week saw it up on cgn
So rad!!!

ugh, the 715T.
It looks cool, but once you strip off all the plastic you see that it's nothing more than a cheap stamped receiver, barrel, and trigger. Even the trigger set is cheaply made. The buffer falls out of place while shooting, causing FTE and FTF issues. It's a toy at best.
That said, I spent almost 2 hours on my dad's 715T and it works like a charm now. I filed and polished the sear and trigger set, and made some fine adjustments to the feed ramp. Still, it took 2 hours to make this gun work. Spend the same time on a 10/22, and it will plink at 100 yards all day long.
Now where's my 9mm registration?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Stupid soft waiting period..... I want to shoot this f'king thing!

I really like it. The ergos are good, and once you learn to make left handed mag changes it becomes a fun NR toy. 10 round LAR mags are a good time with Norinco surplus ammo.
I'm about 500 rounds through it now, and I'm thinking it's time for the flat top upper and an eotech. Or a vortex. We'll see what the budget has to say about that.

Got a new pair of Surefire EP4 ear protectors in the mail today. Wearing them with the stoppers out allows for near normal conversation. Pretty impressive and I like the casual look. Big step up for me over bulk orange foamies with my overears on top for everyday. I think for something really loud I'd still use the foam + overears and of course while shooting I'll use my overears over these but for just kicking around while people are shooting in the vicinity just these should be fine.
http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x108/Brianrieta/sfep4_zps8f368972.jpg
Red for the right ear, clear for the left. Great fit (my right ear canal tends to expel foamies). Allows low level sounds to be heard. What's not to like?

My sks doesn't see a lot of action anymore. The 7.62 is a great round. It has a ton of power and is a pretty cheap round to shoot. I can see why guys tacticool them. It's heavy, rough, and not quite as cool as some of the other toys. If you can only bring 5 fund to the range, what will you bring?
Mine will stay stock with the crude iron sights, or maybe a vintage optic. Nothing built after 1954 to keep her period original. It's fun too shoot the old stuff, plus it helps one appreciate how far firearms have come.

I was at the LGS today, and aside from petting their cute little dogs (and blowing bank on ammo), I checked out a Sig ar. I can't find a picture online that shows how cool it is, but yeah. Very cool, indeed. I really hope they make them unrestricted soon.

^ I'm treating my SKS as a fun and cheap plinker, just a little bigger than a .22 plinker. My goal is to get a lever action or two (had one as a kid) - so the iron sights work on the SKS is good practice. I won't be modifying it in anyway, I like it roughed up the way it is. I figure my kids will like shooting it when they get a little older. For $159 bucks, why not chuck one in the safe?

I'm going to start reloading the 223/5.56. I'm getting tired of $.50/round, while the Norinco stuff is about $.38/round. It's dirty though, totally different than shooting the AE or S&B.

147 grain would be awesome in a Jericho. The beauty of the IWI is that it's built to be a 45 cal. So in 9mm format it has a lot of steel to keep the bang inside. Now imagine a 750 grain 50 cal shot. There won't be much shoulder left.

Then how come Lee Valley just picked it up? Tru-Oil® - Lee Valley Tools (http://www.leevalley.com/en/wood/page.aspx?p=67594&cat=1,190,42942,67594)
Anyways, I want to do this myself, so sending it out is not going to happen. The gun is stripped, sanded, stained, and I removed all the old bluing already. Regular vinegar does wonders. What would happen if I just polished the barrel? Going to go to CGN and read about that option. I also wouldn't mind simply polishing the aluminium receiver, not sure how that would work out and how well it would look over time.
Here is a teaser of work in progress - lots more work to go.

So far, so good. Been chipping away at this slowly but surely. Painted the receiver, ejector, screws, and mag tube the other day.
http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq314/Zedbra/MIsc/Private/2014-07-13160841_zps732d548c.jpg (http://s459.photobucket.com/user/Zedbra/media/MIsc/Private/2014-07-13160841_zps732d548c.jpg.html)
Today I blued the barrel - that was a fun process and it turned out great. I just used Outers bluing from CT and took my time, did several coats and I'm quite satisfied with how well it turned out. No pics yet, I'm letting it cure for a few days.
Also managed to polish the trigger assembly, wax the buttstock, and then I sanded down the stock and pump. The natural wood is very light so I wasn't sure if I should stain it before adding Tru-oil.
http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq314/Zedbra/MIsc/Private/2014-07-14192302_zps1e42903f.jpg (http://s459.photobucket.com/user/Zedbra/media/MIsc/Private/2014-07-14192302_zps1e42903f.jpg.html)
So I wanted to see if the Tru-oil would darken it up, and added a first coat and let it dry. It didn't darken much at all.
http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq314/Zedbra/MIsc/Private/2014-07-14194300_zpsca6fd59c.jpg (http://s459.photobucket.com/user/Zedbra/media/MIsc/Private/2014-07-14194300_zpsca6fd59c.jpg.html)
So when that was dry enough to sand, I added a thin layer of black stain and it is now going the direction I envisioned.
http://i459.photobucket.com/albums/qq314/Zedbra/MIsc/Private/2014-07-14213555_zps3335ec15.jpg (http://s459.photobucket.com/user/Zedbra/media/MIsc/Private/2014-07-14213555_zps3335ec15.jpg.html)
I'm going to sand out the grooves in the black stain, sand it again and I'll probably need to do a second or third coat of black before I can then start back with the Tru-oil. Overall, it's been a great project to do during this nice little heat wave - I hang in my gazebo and stay outta the sun. It's been fun learning how to do all these processes. I'm probably going to need to watch a video to show me how to put it all back together, cuz as time goes by so does my memory.

Well, after many new 'firsts' when trying to finish this gun, I finally have it all back together. I ended up with about 8 coats of Tru-oil on the pump and about 10 on the stock. The last few coats on the stock it started to get a lot of crystals in it (the oil will do this), and I didn't want to keep sanding - so I hit it with my bench polisher and that was a mistake - took off layers and I needed to reoil some more.
Anyways, I did figure a way to polish it eventually with my 7" orbital on low, though I did take of some staining near the buttstock. Anyways, I like how it turned out but next time I will try a different stain and oil process. Also, I will polish the barrel better before bluing - and perhaps do a few more coats. Perhaps tomorrow I can get it out and pump a few rounds down the barrel.

the limited run of glocks, with factory barrels are really nice. A company used to bring g19 in with aftermarket lone wolf barrels and sell them for almost a 1000$, im not paying 1000 for a glock :heckno:
stock barrels on g19/g23 were too short and were prohib so having a factory tb was nice too bad the g19 are sold out but theres some g23(40cal) and g17L(long slide) left .
If anyone is in the market for a pistol Id recommend tracking down a g19 you could always flip it considering it was a limited run as they say.

Man, you need an SKS in the safe. They're cheap and plentiful, they shoot a pretty serious round in terms of size and velocity, and they're historic as hell.
I have one with a BC Tactical pickatinny rail and red dot, but I took it off. The gun deserves to be left stock and shot in it's unadulterated form. Not that I would judge anyone who tacticools out their SKS. But mine will be kept stock, and shot often with the bayonet out.

Well, I went for a long drive the other day to clear my thoughts and low and behold - I ended up at a nice gun shop. I like functional Milsurps, and had been toying the idea of picking up a Swiss K31. Well, they had some at this shop (they are getting harder to find) and so I walked out of there with a decent walnut stock K31 rifle and 400 rounds of 7.5x55. I love the straight-pull Mauser bolt and apparently these are tack-drivers even with dioptic sights. As mentioned, I got this at Wholesale in Langley and they have about 60 more in stock.
I haven't been able to get to the range because it is temporarily closed here in town due to a 3 day rock festival (Eminem is playing tonight) - but I have had time to go over the rifle and been considering how I am going to refurbish it to my liking. It is 70 years old, used by the military (whatever that consists of in Switzerland - at least you know it hasn't killed anyone) and it is showing. I'm definitely going to be removing the stock, stripping it, bleaching it, steaming out the dents that I can, and then either staining it or perhaps I will try some Cerakote. The metal will more than likely get Cerakoted - not sure if I will stay with black or go with a stainless look.
I have a bayonet and a clip-on Optics mount coming in the mail for the rifle. Mounting regular optics isn't that easy as it is a top-eject, so the scope will be slightly mounted to the side. I may add a muzzle break, depending on the kick.

Well, they all have some slight surface rust now and seeing as how he is the Godfather to my children, and he lets me use his shop to work on my car for free, it was the least I could do to offer to restore a few items for him.
So I have a Winchester Defender with pistol grip that has some rusting on the barrel and a little on the mag tube that I am going to strip, clean and Cerakote. I'm not sure if I want to stay with black grips and an aluminum receiver/barrels or black receiver and dark red red grips - I will think about that a bit more. I am going to add an ATI folding pistol grip, possibly a Magpul front grip (I like their looks, though the ribbed stock is nice too), possibly a heat shield if I can find one, and I have been half considering a front pistol grip pump pull - though I cannot find many options up here and have not found anyone that has any feedback on them. Anyone tried one?

Also, he gave me an older Savage 24 O/U with .22LR on top and a .410 below. Even though there is rust and the barrels were dirty, I took it to the range to see how she shot and it was a fun little gun - something I have been considering buying for my wife. You can't feel anything when you shoot the .22, and there is very minimal kick on the .410 - this is an excellent gun for youths/beginners.
Anyways, this gun is certainly in need of some TLC. All the original bluing is showing rust through it on the original metal, there is rust inside the receiver and the cheap wood stock is banged up pretty good. I know I am going to sand, steam, and then Cerakote the stock Smith and Wesson Red and then I may go with either a traditional bluing colour or stainless look for the barrels and receiver. I'm going to think about that for a bit.

Me first on this one! Once I get it set-up and shooting so sweet it inspires a new Blues song, then I'll open that offer to you.
There is a 70 year old guy at my range that uses a K31 with a dioptic set-up and he punches 2" groupings at 250 yards. Not bad for a 70 year old rifle *and a 70 year old eye). To activate the safety, you pull the loop and rotate it 90 degrees - that also locks the bolt. Designed so you can do it while wearing gloves - oh those Swiss.

i heard reliable gun is good for quick work.
most actual gunsmiths have 3 month wait lists.
i wanted to take my 1892 to get a cowboy action work done and the guy quoted me atleast 3 months at the earliest so i said fuck it and just put enough ammo through it for it to smooth out :accepted:

Yeah I ended up going italian sporting goods, $20 later they had the pin removed and mounted the gas chamber into the new housing :fullofwin:
I can see why people bitch about surplus SKS' taking forever to clean -- it took me and a friend half a day with a steam cleaner to completely get all the nasty grease off, and I didn't even bother cleaning the stock -- just put the new tapco one on there

A can of Crud Buster (or brake cleaner) and the SKS would have been clean in 30 minutes. At least, mine was. I'm curious to see how it turns out for you.
I got my K31 to the range today and that rifle packs a punch. It felt about the same as my 7mm MAG (the 7mm has a recoil pad). I wasn't able to get the sites to my liking, I kept shooting high but after 30 rounds through it and 20 though my 7mm, I decided to give my shoulder a rest. My scope side-mount came in the mail today, so I will try a scope on it and see if I can find the sweet spot afterwards through the irons.

The steamer made things easier, I went pretty slow cleaning it out really well because I'm anal. I was just happy I didn't have to use a rag to get all that crap off
Quick question, I see red dot sights on amazon.com for $50-$70 that compare with ones being sold locally for $160+.
I looked up the laws, it seems that US customs won't allow you to export sights, but it says nothing about how Canada handles it. Some posts suggest you can bring them back, no problem -- anyone have experience with it? I'd be ordering it to PR, picking it up, and physically bringing it across the border on my person (and declaring it, obv) -- I would avoid US customs so the question is how does canadian customs handle this

I would personally avoid it. Not worth the risk to save a few bucks. The canadian border guards could care less if you bring in gun parts/accessories. Of course they will tax you accordingly. Like you said, it is the american side you need to worry about. The US takes their gun laws very seriously. Sat you pick up across the border and get caught, you can be arrested for "smuggling arms." I pick up things from the US quite often, and I'd say about 2 times a year, I will have a couple of US border guards come up to my car at the borde line up back into Canada to ask if I am carrying any gun parts back.
If you do your research, you can find quite a few alternative options. One is through brownells . com. Brownells are able to export many different types of gun parts into Canada legally as long as the manufacturer has proper export license and the order is under $500. In my experience, many big name companies will have the proper licenses. For anything over $500, you can still make the order as long as your fill out the required paperwork for export. I've done this a couple of times and can say this process is surprisingly pretty quick and simple. There is a whole tutorial on CGN for people who want to learn how to do this.

Legally you need an export permit for it to leave the states, some US sellers have it so they can ship to Canada but I think it's a hassle to get so very few of them bother. Canadian customs won't care but if US customs get wind of it you might be in for a bad day.

Posted this earlier in the thread but essentially what was said by those above is correct. Not worth the potential trouble.
Congrats on the SKS btw.
Was the ammo it came with corrosive?
Canadian CFO says its fine to import into Canada...
Importing isn't the hard part.
It's a whole different ball game exporting parts/accessories out of the US under their export laws (Department of State) and things controlled by ITAR
Some things include:
-ammunition
-some scopes
-barrels/triggers(basic firearm parts)
Things not included off the top of my head:
-reloading equipment(presses, etc.)
-I believe grips might be okay as well
Don't know if people have experienced it but sometimes coming north there is a checkpoint of US CBP officers, they are essentially looking for undeclared currency, firearms being exported without the proper documentation.
With all that being said, I know people who bring through ammunition, scopes, 10 round magazines, stocks, etc. but one day when they hit that roadblock, they will regret it.
^To add to that, here is an extended list (by no means complete). Things you can bring back from America legally:
-reloading equipment (not consumables)
-targets
-cleaning kits
-carry cases/bags
-slings
-safes/lockers/trigger locks
Things that are illegal to export from America without permits:
-firearms and internal parts, including most parts that attach to a firearm
-mounts for optics, lights, slings
-optics
-magazines and magazine parts
-ammunition, including reloading components to make ammunition
If a US Federal agency catches you with any of those items, you could be imprisoned/fined and refused future entry into America.

Also correct me if I'm wrong but IIRC it's not quite all scopes/sights that aren't allowed to be exported, there might be some exception for non-zoom stuff but I'm not sure, best to check the US export info for the exact details on that.

Well, I have wanted a 30-30 lever for as long time - my dad always said you don't have a collection unless you have one. I was at the range last night and there was no one else there for a couple hours, right up until I decided it was time to leave and I was about to turn the range green (meaning no firing), a fellow comes in and wanted to simply put 8 rounds down a new shotgun he bought.
I noticed his shotgun was a new 20g SX3 and it was one I almost bought for my wife but have decided on something else. He said it was for his wife but she didn't know yet, and that he has to sell one of his guns to bring this one into the house. I told him I couldn't help unless he had a Marlin or Winchester 30-30 lever. Annnnnnd....that is exactly what he was selling. **sigh**
He let me fire the last round down the SX3 (it is sure a light shotgun, let alone for a semi auto) and then invited me over to his place for a beer and to have a look at the Marlin. I loved it, but needed to think it over and said I would call him today. It wasn't really in my plans to add another rifle so soon, but even my wife said that it was the one rifle I have always wanted, more so since my father passed.
So, I woke up, drank a coffee, then called the fellow and arranged to come by after lunch. Here it is - a Marlin 336C with less than 100 rounds down it mounted with a Bushnell XLT 3-9 scope. I didn't like the idea of a scope at first, but this is going to be my back-up hunting rifle so I now like the idea. Also, I have several Bushnell scopes and they have never let me down yet. Can't wait to get this one to the range!

has anyone ever sent a rifle in the mail via ups or fed ex???
had some boo-boo's on a non restricted rifle(safety broke off inside the firing assembly...but...the firing assembly has been tightened with loctite from their factory so badly that I've destroyed 3 wrenches on attempting to remove them and thus warping the head of the screws) and since its under warranty, the company just said mail it in to them and they'll take care of it.
any idea how im sending it? in a hard rifle case? or pre wrapped up in a box and drop it off at the ups/fed ex place?
never had to send a gun in before so this will be a learning experience for me hah.

I am spending a lot of time with my K31 and I am really liking how it shoots. I put a Zeiss Terra 3X 4-12X42 scope on it and my grouping is getting there. I like. Also shot a beautiful Winchester 1894 in 44 MAG that I bought with the intentions of giving it to my friend....after shooting it, though.....I kinda want one. lol

Time to add some pics on this page. Impressed with the K31's open sights grouping, I decided to order the SwissProducts scope-mount and then added a Zeiss Terra 3X 4-12x42 onto the rifle. This thing is just great to shoot, though my shoulder might disagree after 30+ rounds. I only shot about 20 rounds today - took about 8 rounds to sight the scope I figure.

Here is how the offset looks. The casings now hit the scope and side eject rather than popping straight up and back, landing on my neck.

And here was the final outcome from 5 rounds @ 75 yards. The first shot was the one to the far left. Couple clicks on the scope put me a little over right, but good enough for my liking for now.

I had bought a motion detecting LED light at Lee Valley a long time ago to use for my kids, but my house never really gets dark, so I decided to mount it in one of my gun safes. It works great to see the top shelf and all the guns in the safe (though the picture is dark) - it turns on as soon as I open the door and stays on for 60 seconds if there is movement. You can adjust the time to stay on up to 90 seconds and also the brightness of the LEDs. (I'm giving the Red Rider to my son for Xmas).

Since the safe was open, I decided to pull out my 7mm MAG and K31 and go to the range again. Managed 1 MOA at 200 yards on the 7mm MAG but was shooting low on the K31. My shoulder was/is a little soar from all the time at the range lately so I didn't want to shoot more and zero my scope on the K31.
Anyways, I had seen a target tree similar to originalhypa's at CT here in town the other day and after thinking it over I decided to go back there and buy it. It said it was $79.99 but it came up as $50.00 at the till, I asked them to check that and they did, and said that was the price. Okay. It isn't listed on their website, but here it is:

Also, props on the target tree, Zed. Next time I come through Squamish I'll pop into the Cdn Tire and see if they have any more in stock. For $50, I'll buy two!

Well, I wanted to try 150+ yard shooting with my 10/22 today but it was just too windy. So, after not hitting my new 3/8" thick metal targets at 150 yards and 200 yards, I decided to point my K31 and a few with my 30-30 at them. The 7.5x55 Swiss went right through the targets, the low shots were the 30-30 and one didn't make it through the pole, the bullet is still inside.

I found a neat 20g shotgun for cheap, thought it would also be good to teach my wife to shoot a bigger bore. It is an Ithaca 900 semi auto and the whole barrel slides back as part of the inertia system to eject the shells - it sounds like artillery when firing from all the moving metal. It has some dings and scratches but I picked it up for $240 with 100 target shells.

The wife finally had a day off on the weekend, so I decided to do a bunch of work on my guns that I have been putting off. I disassembled my takedown 12g, also disassembled my friend's Savage 24 and glued some cracks and then sanded (and sanded some more) the stock to get ready for refinishing.
After it cooled down, I decided to finally tackle my 10/22. So I tore it apart and did the auto-release mod and then I lightened the trigger as well. I thought I screwed it up but I had the spring next to the hammer in upside down - swapped that around and it works great now. Should have done these a long time ago.

I had a friend down from Whistler this morning and I convinced him to come to the trap tournament at my range today. I've only shot trap once and that was for three rounds. Anyways, I wanted to try out this 20g I picked up.
A few of the seniors there were admiring it and I picked it up and handed it to him.
He said, "Oh that's light".
I replied, "Yeah, its just a 20g".
"You know 20g is a little light for trap here"
"I don't really care, I just got the gun and I want to shoot it."
Managed 2 rounds of 15 (and one 12), placing me second twice. I heard a lot of excuses from others complaining about their scores and that it was too windy etc etc - but I was quite happy with 15 - especially seeing as how it was only my second time shooting trap and also coming from my light little 20g. :noyoudidnt:

Good call on the basic 10/22 mods, Zed. You can spend a fortune building up a 10/22, and it will shoot really well. But at the end of the day you'll end up with a $1500 10/22 that plinks squirrels at 300 yards. There are so many better ways to spend the budget.

That's too bad, as it's a really nice firearm. Good luck with the sale. I still lust over that little Sig patrol with the 100 round barrel mag, but a V7 is a nice alternative.
Also, I'll be popping by the shop today. I'm looking for a Magpul type foregrip for my T97. My back is finally getting better, and I still haven't shot that new target I picked up back in July. What can I say, it was mountain biking season.

Yeah, I was looking at a hammer and thought - why not just file it first, buy the hammer if I screw up. Some people dump a lot into their 10/22's, I'd rather dump that into other guns. (Though I did buy another stock and will maybe, slowly, eventually, do a custom build 10/22)

Well, I tried to hide it from the wife but it didn't turn out that way - another shotgun showed up in the mail today. Impressed with how my Ithaca long recoil shoots, I decided to look into picking up an old Breda semi-auto long recoil in 12 gauge. These shotguns were considered as extremely well engineered for their days, designed to be taken apart without tools and very well made. Mine is in excellent shape with only a couple of safe dings on the lower stock. Inners are excellent as well. Took it to the range and it shoots great - I'm liking it.
I emailed Breda to confirm the build date, but this is more than likely an early '60s production. http://www.gundigest.com/gun-collecting-firearm-collecting/gun-collecting-unique-breda-shotgun

I let my SKS sit for too long after shooting it and the bolt/firing pin is looking pretty grungy
Just curious, how do you guys get the brownish discoloration off the surface of the bolt assembly?
I scrubbed the shit out of it with a stiff nylon brush + solvents but there's still some that remains .. I have some fine steel wool but was advised not to use that on the bolt

I was at Wanstalls a couple months ago, looking for some 10/22 bits. I was thinking I could buy a basic trigger kit for about $50 and fit it all in. They only had the full blown Dlask trigger kit for $300. Now, I would have bought it because it's the last piece I need to build a new 10/22 from spare parts. Problem was, it was missing a couple minor pieces to complete my parts gun. I checked into those parts, and found that it would be cheaper for me to buy a 10/22 for parts.

I was hitting the 10" gong at 100 yards with the horrible open T97 sights, so the Troy sights should be a huge upgrade.
the same age I was taught to shoot.
I remember around the age of 9, my dad would drop smoke bombs in the rat holes under the barn, and I would sit at the exit with the .410 waiting for them to come running out. We were taught young about gun safety, and it's a way of life for me now.
My kids are always invited out to shoot with me, and they're just not interested. Guns around our house aren't mysterious. They're just tools that I happen to keep triple locked up.

After making a bunch of calls I finally found one red Savage Rascal in the Lower Mainland. Went and picked it up from Reliable this morning, and then had it our to the range to "test fire" it after work. Nice simple action, smooth bolt, it nicely ejects empty casings, and the sights are surprisingly accurate.
I'll be giving this to my boy for either his Bday or Xmas, but I figured I would get the search done early. Many shops have these Rascals on back order and have had on back order for a while.

Nah, biggest thing is keeping your finger off the trigger lol. The second you pick up a handgun your finger wants to naturally fall onto the trigger. At least that's what I noticed

Well, I passed my Restricted course today and now I just need to send in my paperwork. On another note, I received some pics from one of the guns I had sent to CerakoteBC and it turned out awesome. I can't recommend Frank from CerakoteBC enough - he spent hours on both my guns and he is a perfectionist - so know that you are going to get your money's worth.
I had taken a few guns from a friend of mine to clean them up as he had his basement flood and then he left his guns in a humid area, so they were covered in rust and the wooden stock had the imprint pattern of the gun bag in the stain and was in rough shape.
I told him I would pay to have his guns restored (he is the Godfather to my kids and lets me use his shop to work on my car and truck) but that I got to choose how they would be done. I had an idea for his Savage 24 and below are the before and after pics. I did this with the hopes he may sell it to me for my kids and wife, which he probably will, but even if not I think it turned out even better than I imagined.

you have no idea what a gem you have there lol. savage model 24's usually go for between $500-1000+ on the used/collectors market.
too bad it got rusted so heavily, woulda been nice to see it in its original dressing. the refinish still looks nice though, i like how it still has a flavor of the historical in the color choices

The XDM shoots great. I have been a Glock guy for years. I have owned over 20 of them in all sorts of flavours but I wanted to try something new. The XDM is a very nice shooting gun. For me, I find it fits better than the Glock did and that makes for a better shot.
Mine is just like pictured, 45acp, 5.25" competition barrel and slide, competition sights and all black.
The grip safety was never an issue for me. Some people switch them out for an aftermarket one that's metal to be closer to a 1911 style safety. If you want to give it a try some time just let me know when your hitting the range and I can bring it by.

anyone ever use these?
ive a 870 wingmaster - full choke, that was from the 70's (my dads old shotgun he gave me)
it can only take lead shot, but i cant find anywhere about the shells i posted in the link.
anyone know if its steel or lead? ive tried reading and the "extra hard shot" from what i THINK i understand is that its lead thats got a little something extra in it so its harder than regular lead shot.
anyone able to set me on the right path here? i ask because ive been given half a case and i dont want to be using them if i shouldn't
--edit--
just read every page of this thread just now
for the shotgun shells, as for half a case, its about 8 full boxes worth.
dont know if i'll get failed for this for asking, but oh well. on the very first page hondaracer asked if people could pm him if there were any places in the lower mainland to target/trap shoot out in the bush other than stave or sylvester road (soundy posted a link on page 8 saying there is a firearms discharge bylaw, but ive gone many times in the past and have had no problems, even with the rcmp suv drive right past me, and i do clean up after myself. a fan rake + a flat head shovel and bag to pick up my empty casings. i just want to play it safe.), where could i go? anyone have some hidden gem areas they could share?

Stewie - Myself and several others at our trap tournament are having issues with the newer Clever not wanting to extract properly in a pump or break action; its as if they changed the case somehow as I never had issues with it in the past. Gave me a good excuse to buy a semi-auto. ;)
As for giving up the goods on secret trap places - good luck. No one wants to share because we all see the Little Beirut pictures of areas that people do know about on the internet.

it would be nice to do trap, but i do more target shooting than anything :p
if i really need to, i go deeeeeeeeeep into stave lake hahaha. normally its about 19km's in where i shoot, which is about 10 minutes past sayres lake, on the left hand side of the road theres a trail that branches off and about 50 feet after that it takes a left turn and its nothing but cut down trees.

good luck zedbra!
question though since i've never hunted - if you bag yourself a moose (not sure what average size is), how long would it last a family of 4??? always wondered how long the meat would last. would it go all winter? or maybe 2-3 months max?
also, if anyone can confirm or shed some light on this for me - as i was asking about shooting spots...i was reading some other forums and ran across one on bc4x4. as i recently found out from this thread from a link that was posted, mission has a firearms discharge ban. normally i would go to stave lake, but thats still part of mission, and i know the rcmp do patrols and road side checks up there etc. but, from what they were saying was that after the 17km marker just past sayres lake, you're no longer in the district of mission but on crown land and are able to shoot (there is a massive section to the left of the road past sayres. its nothing but chopped down trees with the back ground heavily dense trees, and pointed in the opposite direction of any lake. can someone tell me if I'm reading this map right or if i am wrong, could you describe how and what i'm looking at wrong. thanks!

it depends on the moose, but the butchered weight (bone out) is roughly 30-35% of the live weight, which works out to 400-500lbs worth of meat.
on a deer, the butchered weight (bone out) is roughly 40-45% of the live weight, but the weight of the bones, hide, etc. on a moose is greater so you get a lower return.
