Finally got the red dot i've been eyeing for a while now for my AR. Sighted in this bad boy at 50 yards this morning. With all parts I've wanted for this rifle, this project is considered "finished" for now.

Now off to my 11.5 AR build.....

Reloading is something I definitely want to get into. However it's another thing to learn and another thing to put time into. Since I am only shooting 9mm and 556 at the moment, it's not really worth it for me to invest the time and money into it. It's definitely something I will get into when I buy a .308 and get into precision shooting. Hopefully bythe end of this year.

I currently reload for 9mm, 8x57 and 308. I have the basic Lee Pro 1000 for the 9mm. If i hit it hard, i can load about 500 rounds and hour. For the rifle rounds, its a slow and meticuloud process. For me to load about 1k 9mm will cost about $200 in materials.

I haven't priced out the materials costing yet, but I plan to reload for .357, .38 Special, and 7mm Rem MAG. All of those are costly when store bought. Just trying to read on what press/equipment to seriously consider.

i guess it really depends on your budget. I picked up the pro1000 off CGN with the 9mm setup for like $150. The rifle press i bought the Lee 50th anniversary set, they're going for $150 new right now. I guess it comes down to how much your willing to spend and how much you are going to reload. I only every make it out shooting only a handful of times a year so i really don't need a machine that can pump out thousands in no time as i haven't gotten to that type of demand for ammo yet. Don't get me know, i still keep around 5k of rounds total of various calibers ready to go at any time.

I spoke to Henry at BudgetShooterSupply today. Looking at setting me up with Lee Turret Press Kit, dies, primers, 2000 rounds of bullets for 38 and 357, couple pounds of powder, all for under $500. He doesn't have any 7mm MAG dies right now.

Seems fair, he spoke to me for some time and I have heard a lot of good things about him from other local people that have dealt with him.

yes, Henry is a great buy, and he lives about 15 mins from me. I purchase most of my reloading supplies from him, great guy to deal with. Only thing to watch out with a turret when your pumping out rounds is to make sure you full stroke the ram. A slight short stroke can end up with a squib. such a pain as your blasting off rounds adn the click, no bang but the bullet is lodged into the barrel. Lucky every time it has happened to me the bullet wasnt far enough down the barrel to be able to fully seat the next round.

Henry is a good guy. We got some powder from him a while back. Now I need to talk to him again about some 45/70 dies. I paid $54.99 for a box of 20 45/70 rounds.

Granted, it is an elephant gun with bullets larger than the average revscene user's peepee.
It's the one on the left side, next to the .308

the G36 look alike is a base model 10/22. Like incubus said, if your changing out everything, no point paying for the higher model and take all the goodies off.

I'm more into plinking, target shooting. The odd friendly competition between friends, 3 gun style on their farms.

Zedbra

Hondaracer - if you want to do your own build, start with a Dlask receiver and go from there.

incubus - I'm into all the above now. Started plinking and hunting, have now moved onto restricted hand guns. I quite like shotgun trap shooting as well. It's all good, albeit expensive.

Eternal_SiR

one thing to remember about the dlask receiver is that depending on the stock you want, it may or may not fit due to the integrated rail on top of the receiver.

It's a ton of fun. I'm having a hell of a time finding a set of peep sights for it. Not so much finding the sights, but getting over spending $200 on sights and a rail, and another $2.75/shot.

I can't imagine how guys who own cannons feel when they add up the cost of their passion.

The initial cost is high, but it will pay off in the long run. I'm heading out to test some .223 and 9mm reloads that my brother was toying with. They're + loads, so we're trying them in the Jericho 941. That gun is a beast.

If the .223 cycle in my T97 without problems, they'll work in anything.

All of the above!
We pink for fun and sport, betting with friends, etc. But in the end it's all about having confidence in my equipment and skills, making one shot kills when I'm called upon. The last thing I want to do is chase a wounded animal into the bush. I don't like my food to suffer.

With the integrated rail is this an issue that is like, won't work period with some stocks due to design or it will work with some modification?

Eternal_SiR
03-14-2015, 07:36 AM
it won't work period. Depending on the stock, in my case with the g36 stock, it would not fit as the receiver sits inside the stock completely. I guess if the stock exposes the top i don't see it not fitting, or at least will fit with minor mods

After months of reading and thinking it over, I finally made the order for all of my reloading gear. Henry at Budget Shooter was awesome to deal with, always took the time to answer all of my questions. Now, I wait for Canpar.

Decided to skip outta the office and hit the range, I wanted to zero a new scope on my 7mm. Not one person was at the range - it was perfect. Took my .357 with me, it was shooting great as well. Just a great day of first thinking about and then getting the aromatherapy of gun powder.

Before the keyboard critics jump in - I loaded one .22 at a time - he was not able to go Rambo with a semi auto and I tried to make him wear eye protection but there were others at the range blasting off large calibre rifles and the glasses were leaving too much of a gap for the ear protection to work.

My dad just underwent surgery on his spine as well. He had a herniated disk resulting in compression of the nerve cord. Before he surgery, he was basically bed ridden and on pain killers too (could barely walk).

He went to Lionsgate for day surgery after an MRI was done. It was a day surgery and the cut is about an inch. Fast forward a week and my dad says he's at 95%. Back on his feet and doing everything he was before.

If you have the same thing, I suspect you'll have a swift recovery as well.

I'm in the same situation as you are Eternal.
L5/S1 pinch due to an undiagnosed fracture at some point in time. Today is week #7 of the current flare up, and I've already had a couple of Tylenol Arthritis :(

One thing I can take solace in is shooting. If not for the heavy gear and targets, I could shoot all day long. I've been able to rig up a cart for my heavy gear, so as long as I have someone to haul the AR500 gong out to 100 yards, it's going to be a good day. Good luck with your situation. I'm hoping that they can fix you up like they did CRS' dad.

Also, guns.

Been on T3, naproxen, diclofenac, hydromorph, morphone, percs, oxy.. all with little to no effect.

:(

I've never even seen a Percocet, let alone had one not work for the pain. Good luck man. The meds are horrible, for sure. T3 and diclofenac were enough to mess with my system, but as long as I had a couple T3 every 4-5 hours it was manageable. At least now I'm on OTC pain meds which are so much less harmful to the system. Hopefully the medical community will recognize that you're a young man with lots of years left in you, and put you back together. Good luck man, and keep us updated. That's what scares me about reloading. I did some measuring on my brother's 5.56 reloads, and they sat a little taller than the AE or chinese surplus.

Taking parts of the gun to my face doesn't really appeal to me. Especially as a bullpup shooter.

Well, pumped out about 20 rounds this morning after getting it all set-up. It took a while to get it adjusted exactly where it needs to be - mangled about 6 rounds figuring it all out.

What surprises me is just how little gun powder is in the casing. Not much. Still trying to read definitive answer as to how far to seat my different bullet types. Lots to learn.

Eternal_SiR
03-27-2015, 11:28 AM
yeah thats the hard part, finding the perfect seating depth. When i first started reloading, i tried to copy factory ammo recicpe, same powder, same grains, and same bullets. Then took calipers to see how far OACL was and tried my best to match. Which turret did you go with? What are you using to clean your brass? I use an ultrasonic cleaner. I have 2 sizes, a big and small, small one does about a batch of 400 9mm. the big brother does about 1500 .308 brass

agree'd, i haven't started with the 5.56 yet as surplus is still cheap. Once they start going up higher in price or lack of supply. Plus i'm just plinking with the T97 and AR so don't exactly need precision loading.

Seating depth and then crimp die settings were the hardest to get just right but once you get it figured out it is pretty straight forward. I am just reloading for my revolver right now, so OAL is not as important as a semi-auto or rifle. Once I feel confident with some more rounds then I will read and take on reloading my 7mm MAG rifle rounds, I have several hundred cleaned brass ready to go.

For cleaning I just bought a Frankford Arsenal EZ Tumbler. Using corn media and a little polish - the casings looked new even after running 800 cases through them. Ran each batch for 3-4 hours. Cheap and easy. For reloading I went with the Lee Classic Turret set-up. Everything about the kit is good except the scale - I need a better scale and preferably a digital one - I'm going to look into that ASAP.

Just got back from the range and all 60 rounds of .38 SPL fired as expected. I still have all my fingers. :fuckyea:

I will reload a bunch more and then get into some hotter loads of .357. The wad cutters were not as accurate as the jacketed rounds, but I will play with the loads a bit to see if I can balance that out.

Eternal_SiR
03-28-2015, 01:51 PM
Looks you got a good setup going. just watch out for stuck media in the flash hole. Definitely a digital scale makes the world of a difference. Glad your getting good results. Like you said, your first load for a wheel gun is much safe for learning. As long as its not a double charge, thats all that matters.

Zedbra

Trying to figure out all the little things you need is time consuming for reloading. Now I am trying to figure out what I need for resizing/honing/ etc. I have one piece, but then you need this and this....etc.

I managed to reload 100 .38SPL yesterday with two different grain loads and 148g wad cutters. Also managed to reload 100 .357 MAG rounds - again with two different grain loads and copper jacketed 158g bullets. Looking forward to starting the testing to see what works best.

welp. prognosis of my scans didn't turn out as i hoped. Minor disc degeneration from L1-L5 vertabrate, moderate from L5 down. Also causing spinal stenosis. Instead of the disc bulging to the sides, mind is going straight into the spine which is causing it to put pressure on my nerve which explains why my legs will get tingly and numb when i stand. So off to the specialis referal now and the waiting game beings. I had a 66% chance of being able to be easily operated on but just my luck i fell into the 33% that is not so easy. FML

Stay positive man.
At least you're past this stage and moving on to the next one with the specialist. Modern back surgery is a lot less invasive, and a lot more successful today. Plus you're in good hands in BC. There are a lot of good surgeons who work in our region.

There is truth to staying positive though. While your case may be difficult, it's not impossible and that is a hope to hang on to. Think about going to your first IPSC match after all this is said and done. It's going to be all the sweeter when you get there :)

Nice, thats awsome for you. I'm only about 25 min drive, so not horrible. Should do a meet there one day. I talked to the people there, range should be ready for live fire in another month or so. They are open for open house and membership. I just love not having to go out to mission to shoot the T97/AR

I just renewed my membership at my range. It's reasonable at $150/yr. I use it quite often, and even more often when I'm injured and can't play hockey.

Anyway, I'm hoping the prices won't be out to lunch like DVC. I'm actually going to head over to the Langley range in a bit to check it out. I didn't know they had people working there already. Maybe with a range so close to work, I can justify an AR now. hmmmmm......... Kappa

I want to give a shout out to Ed at International Shooting Supplies in Surrey. That guy always takes the time to discuss with me in-depth about whatever subject I have on the go. I just spent another hour there yesterday going over reloading information with him and I think he appreciates people that are right into the hobby. Walked out with a few small items (and a new Chrony) that will really take my reloading in the direction I want it to. Still smiling.

Basically, I say 'hi' to incubus and then chew off Ed's ear cuz I'm more of a rifle guy and incubus prefers his 9mm's blazing. :noyoudidnt:

They have some Mini Mags in stock, I took 10 boxes home. Took them to the range later and they are just in the plastic holder the cardboard box - they aren't in their usual plastic cases anymore. Thumbsdown on that if you want to take them anywhere except the range.

Zedbra, ISS is my go to place as well, despite not being the closest one, i've always had top notch service there. Always end up walking out with wayy more than expected. You can never have too much ammo either. I usually keep at least 4k factory ammo at home. Need to stockpile some more now, at one point i think i had over 10k misc rounds.

Zedbra
04-02-2015, 09:05 PM
Oh, I think I am around 10k rounds about now. I spread my buying over several local shops and do not buy online stores except Budget and Stoeger (for some mags I needed). Generally, I buy a lot of my basics from Italian because it is close to me and their prices are the same as others but they offer the BCWF discount on ammo and accessories, saving a lot of money over time; they just don't have the best stock I find.

A good friend finally lent me his early model Ruger .44 MAG Deerfield Carbine to try out for a while. This things is getting rare and is the predecessor to the 10/22 but with a lot more dropping power. I can't wait to put some through it tomorrow.

^ you had a few beautiful rifles in your inventory. That used custom 7mm MAG is still on my mind. If you want one rifle that will last your lifetime and then some, I'd add that one to your steed.

Today I deprimed, trimmed, chaffed, measured, washed, then tumbled (still tumbling the last 75) 150 7mm MAG cartridges - ready to load. I learned a few things: reloading rifles rounds is tedious, large primer pockets are not fun to clean, you can always tell good brass when you first pick it up, and don't wait to prep 150 hunting rounds - that took hours.

I also stripped the stock of my friend's 44 carbine, it has a large 4" crack that I am going to repair, though I did tell him to order another stock while they are still available. Should be a fun little side project.

Opening date has been delayed as they scrapped the origional 7.62 limit and redisgned the backstop to handle 50BMG. I probably should have bought it at the gun show but I wanted to read reviews on it first. Seems to have a few issues with easy fixes. And a lot of people seem to complain about the build quality but I played around with it a bit and it felt fine to me. I just wanted somthig thay looks like the SCAR lol..

I was toying with that gun on Sunday.
It is a really nice gun to shoot. One of my shooting buddies has one. I mocked him for spending so much on a rimfire SCAR wannabe, until I emptied a couple of mags through it. It cycled beautifully, and worked flawlessly throughout the day. It was really consistent in the way it shot too. The MK22 is a nice gun, albeit pricey. It's heads and tails better than my dad's Mossberg 715T. At least the MK22 has some nice build features.

So many SKS and 12 guage shotguns at the show over the weekend. I bought a nice Sun Optics green LED with laser that I mounted on my 1911. I should take a pic of that. Bought some cheap precision tools from the tool guy for $6, along with some smoked salmon. I was going to buy a "Surrey Strong" shirt too, until I came to my senses :lol

Can anyone suggest a cheap red dot that I can add to my son's .22 Rascal? Or a red dot/laser?

if you still have that 22 optic, we could work out a trade for my TRS-25. It's just sitting on my 870, and honestly I would prefer some sick battle sights on that anyway.

Non restricted - You can hang them on the wall if they are locked and ammunition is not close by.

Restricted - attach a lock and then they must be fastened to the wall. Lots of people drill right through the back of a combination trigger lock to fasten it to the wall.

So I sold my sti the other day, and I've been looking at spending some of that cash on a new gat. There have been a couple that have caught my eye in the last little while.

The kriss vector is just so space age and futuristic. Plus it's a .45 that uses glock mags (iirc). Cost isn't too bad, about as much as a basic ar. But the vector would be non restricted.

a wheel gun. I've always liked the Smith&Wesson short barrel 38 special. 357 can also be used. Cost is less than a grand for a nice stainless 7 shot. Plus it's a S&W, the penultimate wheel gun.

Chiappa rhino.
its a beast, but it's chiappa so you don't know what you're going to get. It shoots 357, and cost I'd just over a grand.

I love my wheel guns - I picked up another Dan Wesson 15-2 with supposedly less than 50 rounds and I'd believe it because when I took it apart there was no wear, no dirt, and the 8" and 6" barrel have never been fired.

I don't know if you ever plan on competing - even just Club shoots, often only allow 6 shots. The 7 shot S&W needs specific speed loaders etc. I never read a lot about their backstrap strengths, as that was a concern on some of the S&W models for years.

The twins:

On that note, We had some ftf issues with my brother's 9mm reloads. The double action of the Jericho made it lot better. I could double or at times triple strike to fire the round.

I love my 870. It is a simple design, and a proven shotgun. Ive tarted mine up with some tactical bits (are we seeing a pattern here? lol) and the only complaint I have is that the slide release on the 870 is hard to reach when using a pistol grip. If I was starting over again, I would get the Mossberg over the 870.

My Registration showed up and I happened to only work half a day today, so off to the range I went to test out my new 15-2 and compare it with my current 15-2. Well, it certainly is a nice shooter. The single action trigger is almost too light - I'll have to get used to that. I needed to adjust the sights as it was shooting low left initially but then I finally got it going where I thought I was pointing it. ;)

Anyways, here are some pics from the range all shot with my new pistol and an 8" VH barrel/shroud. Targets were set up 13 metres (40 feet) from the shooting line. The lines on the square targets are 1" squares.

Finally getting into the game since getting my license a couple years ago. A complete noob but I'll learn.

Just purchased a rifle online so I guess I need to get a case for storage asap.

Few questions for starters.

Recommendations for rifle cases for storage/transport, I guess it'll be the same case. Specifically an AR 15 type rifle. Not looking to break the bank but willing to go up to $100. Quick search on Youtube seem to rave about the Pelican.

Recommendations on where to buy ammo, accessories, etc either online or local?

Any other starter pointers appreciated.

Zedbra
05-13-2015, 06:21 AM
Well, you won't find a Pelican case for an AR remotely close to $100. With that budget, I would look at Wholesale Sports for variety. Some local shops may have a few hard cases to fit. I only use my hard cases when I go hunting, otherwise I just use a soft case the rest of the year while going to the range.

You can ask incubus here what they carry for AR accessories, I love going to his shop - International Shooting Supplies in Surrey. In Vancouver, I go to Italian Sporting Goods. Also, CanadaAmmo has some good deals on bulk ammo from time to time.

Have fun shooting.

I have a couple of the Plano ones with custom fitting foam. They've been great but again with the increase protection, you have an increased weight.

Yea, looking at Plano right now as a good option for price. How do most of you guys store your restricted rifles? Throw them in one of these cases, lock them, and throw them in the closet? I know the "rules" but just curious how far some of you go to secure it.

I'll probably just throw it in a case, lock gun and case, and throw under the bed or in closet somewhere.

I keep my restricted firearms in a 14 gun safe. I suggest planning ahead and think about if there may be a chance you will possibly buy more firearms in the future. If you think this might me possible, mind as well buy a rifle safe/cabinet to keep your all firearms safe and organized.

For myself, I like to buy "higher-end" firearms and parts. I feel if you are going to put all that money into firearms, scopes, red dots, etc., mind as well spend a little extra money to protect everything. It doesn't make sense to store your valuables in a case where someone can easily pick it up and take out of your house. For myself, a firearm cabinet does not even cut it. A safe that is bolted to the ground is the only way to go if you have thousands of dollars put into your firearms. A safe is not something you buy, it's something you invest in.

Also. keep in mind that soft cases and foam (inside hard cases) also hold moisture and may not be the best for your firearms. That is why I always take them out of the case and put them back in the safe immediately after getting home from the range.

This is all good advice. Get a safe - don't store your guns in cases due to moisture causing premature wear over the years.

Fair and valid points but I won't be going that far in terms of a safe for now. I have no idea how serious I'll be with this hobby right now and with a new baby, saving for a down payment I can't justify going crazy. That's why I went a budget economical route with a Norinco CQ-A as well to test the waters. No need spending $1k on a gun before other parts, case, etc etc only to find out meh not for me.

But if one day I get serious, definitely the full safe bolted to the ground and wall type deal.

I don't mind a cabinet for storing ammo. But what I would really like to do is build a gun room/safe room. to me, that would be the absolute best option.

There are some really cool safes out there though. I spotted one in the US that mounts under your bed. It's a horizontal unit with a quick keyed lock. I don't trust biometric as the good stuff is really expensive. Nothing beats a good 4 button code for quick access.

After I get my firearm licence, am I allowed to just buy whatever gun I want? Are there cross-boarder restrictions so should I just keep the purchases within Canada? Also, what are the regulations in terms of having the gun on you? Are you allowed to conceal-carry or is it just more for storing at home and shooting in more isolated areas? Sorry if this is the wrong thread to post this!

Have you visited the RCMP site for these questions? It has boat loads of good information on there.

To answer your questions:
1. After you get your license (assuming you get both your PAL and RPAL), you can buy both restricted and non-restricted guns. You cannot buy prohibited guns.

2. Yes. Importing guns is a pain and is best left to the professionals. If you really want to, there are companies that can do this for you. Note that it is dangerous territory to buy gun parts (scopes, stocks, whatever) in the states and trying to bring them back up. Depending on what it is, it might be a criminal act (both in Canada and in the US).

3. Read RCMP website about transportation.

4. No. Well. Maybe. Mainly No. Unless your job specifically requires it, you will never get a conceal to carry permit.

Again, have a read at the RCMP website about firearms. Everyone should read it and familiarize yourself with it.

I have the plano double scoped rifle case. It was awsome for the price, i think i bought it in the US for about $140CAD after exchange. Its not a pelican by any case but for that price it was great. Hard foam and the case latches has built in locks so that was a bonus. It does weight a bit empty so once loaded, it does weight a bit. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one, i do already have 5 pelican cases.

agreed. Get a good safe to protect your investment. Despite mine is not bolted down to the floor the thing weights like 500lbs empty. So when loaded with firearms and ammo, i give credit to whoever can move it.

One thing i hate is they advertize as a 14 gun safe but it really doesn't fit 14 very nicely. More like 10 if yours lucky. Bought a large safe thinking i'll never go above it but now its packed like tetris inside and have other in cases because they don't fit anymore.. I need to build a gun room.

A general rule is to buy a cabinet/safe that is advertised to hold double the amount of guns you have. I have a 14 gun safe but only actually only own 5. I think down the road I'm realistically only going to buy one more. There's no way a 14 gun safe will actually hold 14 guns. Maybe if they are skinny guns with no scope/red dot. An optic on a gun can easily take up 2-3 spots of a regular rifle with without any optics.

When I initially only had a couple of rifles, I bought a stack-on 10-gun cabinet, kept everything in there and used my ammo to "secure" the cabinet in place. Like some other people, now that I've upgraded to a larger safe, I've upgraded the cabinet to hold my ammunition. A 10 gun cabinet surprisingly holds a lot of ammo.

yeah.. i picked up a 16 gun safe... i think i maybe have 10 in there right now.. and thats playing tetris with them, luckly one has a folding stock and one is a bullpup so they are short and i can slip them in around the bottom of the safe. I'd like to get a bigger safe.. i keep some ammo in the safe, but most are in ammo cans under my work bench.

Canada does not mind as long as you have a license (pal) you can bring it back.

The problem is US has ITAR regulations, cant export anything out of us without proper papers and etc.

Now importing guns, as long as it isnt prohib(full auto, converted auto etc etc) and over the minimum barrel length for pistols (105mm) it can be done for the right price

I had a gun dream/nightmare last night. In the dream, for some reason I bought a Glock in .357 SIG and I was disappointed in the gun's performance but more disappointed in myself for actually buying that calibre; thinking how much I am going to lose trying to sell it, who would want that calibre, good luck trying to trade it. Made me chuckle when I woke up.

The MK22 is the ultimate tactical style rimfire rifle. It's well worth the $500, especially with the extra mags. My shooting buddy has one, and it's a ton of fun to plink with.

Here is what I saw on the calendar today.

Range three (55 yard) - rented
Range 4 (20 yard) - open

What a joke.

So I hit up the range yesterday with some new toys.

The 686 is a nice, simple gun. The .357 kicks hard as hell, but the 38 special felt almost like a 9mm. The 686 is heavy, so it took a lot of the force away. But my left hand was a little singed after pumping almost 100 shots through it. I love wheel guns!

Another fellow showed up with a 30-06 and he was booming away. I thought "why do you get all the attention?". That was the right time for me to bust out the 45/70 lever. Again, it's a simple gun with mechanical action. I really enjoyed shooting it, and would have blown off a lot more than the 10 or so that I shot. If the rounds were $3 each...

The T97 was flawless, as always. I'm waiting on the lower hand guard for it, and it's done. The T97 has to be one of my favorite guns to shoot. Too bad I shot the bolt holding my steel target up in the first 20 shots. So much for that!
:lol

I had a good time out there shooting the new toys. I need to get my reloads started so I can target these in without breaking the bank.

I personally have a Howard Leight Impact Sport and it's a great all around electronic earmuff.

As for eye protection, there are lots around. I don't have any particular recommendations since I'm using a generic brand I found on amazon.

I was not able to find glasses that fit my children that would fit under their muffs comfortably. I was recommended to try the ESS Suppressor as they have super thin plastic ear pieces that work great under muffs. The guy that recommended these flies Apache helicopters and he swears these are the only glasses he can wear for several hours without issues under his ear muffs/headphones.

I now wear them all the time, they are very comfortable and do not break the bead on the muffs.

I use Smith Optics Aegis Echo. Although these glasses are a little pricey, they are actually ballistic glasses that is made for shooting protection.

Eyes and ear protection are the things I don't mind spending a little more money on as you obviously only have one set of eyes and ears. Another great thing about these are that they have super thin ear pieces that are designed to fit under over the head ear muffs.

Yea good point. Reading up on glasses it seems one of the main concerns is if they fit properly under or over ear muffs.

As for muffs, that they're not so big that it gets in the way of the stock.

Of course the most important is protection first.

Thanks for helping a noob out so far. I'm sure there are more things I need to consider buying but I'm well on my way.

I run these when I'm wearing contacts, and they're nice. The problem is that I rarely wear contacts to the range.

Italian Sporting Goods is having their summer sale today and tomorrow. I picked up a nice leather shoulder holster for my Dan Wesson. I had been eying it for the better part of a year but didn't want to pay $200 for it. They had it stashed downstairs, got them to bring it up, I hummed and hawed and got it for $100. Deal.

Also picked up some G96, a few reloading tid bits, some Federal bricks for $30, and also some smoked BC plastic hot lips 1/ mags for $15 each. I went around lunch time and I expected it to be a bit more busy.

So I've taken that MK22 out a couple times now. First time my dad took it out and the thing shot like fucking garbage, obviously the guy on CGN was either bullshitting me or somthing but the gun could barely shoot 3-4 rounds without jamming, couldn't cycle casings etc.

Took it all apart and addressed the problem areas that the factory "fix" was suppose to take care of. Took it back out this weekend and shot much better, could get through full mags without a jam. Few jams from bad cycling but it was fully improved.

It's a pretty cool gun, on the recoil/bolt opening and closing it has a bit of a different sound/feel, it really does feel like an actual carbine not just some dinky .22

I've been working on cleaning/repairing/refinishing my friend's Ruger .44 Deerslayer over the last several months. The rifle was in really rough shape when I first picked it up from him, I have lost most of the pictures but the stock was beaten, dented, cracked, and both the stock and inside the action had never been cleaned. Ever - since 1974.

So I stripped it down, started reading how to try to restore this poor old stock. I stripped it with Circa 1864, steamed all the dents over the course of another weekend, then let it dry before applying epoxy to a large crack and then letting it sit for another month to completely cure.

I sanded the stock first with 100, then 220, then 600 before starting to add my layers of Tru Oil. I only did one coat per day of Tru Oil and after the first 8 coats I started to smooth the finish with 1000 grit and then the final two coats I sanded with 2000 grit to get it smooth.

I discovered what I initially thought was a scratch filled with dirt was actually a crack across the grain on the pistol grip. From another thread that I asked about this crack, I learned that this piece of walnut is an outside cut and the crack could have happened during falling or perhaps a wind crack. My neighbour knew it was an outside cut just from looking at the stock while I was sanding - as most of the stock is a nice cherry walnut but the front forearm on one side is completely blonde - it's kid of unique.

I messed up the finish a little during the polishing stage - so that took more time to correct. This whole project was all about learning how to do this properly and now I think I am ready to try another project with some of my other stocks. It was a lot of labour but a lot of fun, I really enjoyed seeing it slowly come back to life.

I can't wait to get this back to the range.

Guess I missed wood working, decided to make a target today. I had some of those black plastic stands you stab into the ground, but they keep getting blown over in the wind, and blown up from bad aim with open sights.

I had the folding table saw stands already and the wood laying around, so $3.80 for some bolts and wing nuts, I made this adjustable stand. I also drilled multiple holes in the top that can hold straws, golf tees/balls, and my clay holders. I'm going to work on a different stand that will have a swinging target as well.

Used target is from sighting in my new Zeiss Terra - had already done a dozen shots through my 7mm Mag and that was enough for the day

Closest thing you can carry to a pistol in the woods without an atc. I own a fullsize chiappa and found the quality lacking. Took a while to break in but works pretty decent now. I have the 1892 alaskan in .44 mag as a bush/camp gun. I keep it loaded with hornady .300gr xtp or custom loaded .300gr hardcast +p stuff for bears and whatnot.

werd.

I went with the Marlin 1895 chambered in 45-70. I wish I would have waited for this to come out, as the .357 is a much cheaper round, and a lot easier to find. I'm not a huge Chiappa fan, but this is such a simple rifle.

That said, one shot from a 45/70 will take down ANYTHING the BC wilderness has to throw at you. It's a cannon!

I finally received my EWK 106mm barrel with a custom bushing/nut to go with my original DW 4" shroud.

A while ago I bought a Dan Wesson 15-2 that was a pistol pack, but the seller could not legally sell me the 2" and 4" barrel (but I have the shrouds). After a couple emails, months of waiting for Eric at EWK to have a little spare time, he finally agreed to make me a custom 106mm barrel for my 4" shroud. I also bought a few EWK parts kits, EWK barrel tools, and ordered a few cylinder stops from DW directly, then had all of that shipped to a legal exporter and then waited months for everything to arrive. I still need to press the cylinder stop in properly and then get this out to the range.

^ you mean the revolver? Dan Wessons have interchangeable barrels and shrouds - so my two DW revolvers can use many different sized barrels. I have a 10" barrel/shroud, two 8" barrels/shrouds, two 6" barrels/shrouds, and now one 4.2" barrel/shroud. The original barrel is prohibited, as it was 101mm. This custom 106mm barrel works with the old shroud, but instead of being flush, I needed to have a bushing made to go into the shroud and then the barrel nut is now on top of the shroud.

I spent a good chunk of the day cleaning my hand guns - having multiple barrels is fun but sure makes for a long clean job. I also replaced a cylinder stop in one of my Dan Wessons - I waited months to get them up from the States and it took a little careful filing and a gentle pressing to get it in without cracking the side plate. I'm hoping I can get the groms to agree to go to the range tomorrow to dirty them up again. :)

It's a good day to shoot. Or work on guns. I've been filling the calendar lately and having a good time. Some rain and an inside day would be good for the system.

Especially when new shit finds its way to your mailbox.
I like holstering at the range, but had a heck of a time finding a holster for my 1911 recon.

I also love the 10/22 rifle. It's cheap to shoot, relatively precise, and a lot of fun with a full mag and some steel down range. I have a dragonov clone already, but always wanted to build a short version.

I'm almost there.

I need to grab a short barrel for the folding Fab Defense stock, then a hundred round drum. Trigger mods are always in order. Maybe I'll do that today?

Then I can move the bull barrel receiver back to the dragonov stock along with the optic (thanks again zed!!)

I'm still not sure what kind of sights I will go with on the shortie. Maybe some battle sights?

I just reloaded my first 20 rounds of 7mm REM MAG. I did a variety or bullets and used a balance beam and digital scale, I shall run them through my chrony and see how they do there and on target.

My 7mm MAG is an old Parker Hale with a slow twist, so it prefers lighter bullets versus the nowadays "the heavier the better" the young guys at the gun stores tell ya. Splitting between balance beam and digital scale, I loaded 67g of H1000 and did the following bullet types: (8) 154g Hornady Interlock SP, (6) 150g Nosler Ballistic Tip, and (6) 139g Hornady SST.

Been nervous to reload the big magnum cartridges but I think I have done enough mistakes with my handgun rounds that I took my time, rechecked everything twice, and I'm confident these should work well. Looking forward to some time at the range to test these out.

Being a T97 shooter, I've had to get good with my left hand. The great thing about mounting the scope like that is that you can make minor adjustments on the fly. The D2D scope is a nice piece. The eye relief is perfect, and minor changes can be done with the knobs. Thanks again for that!

A micro dot would be cool. But I'm thinking battle sights. The shortie 10/22 would be for fun. Basically something I could take out to the bush, and pick off pop cans. Maybe throw it on the back of the dirt bike and use it on the odd grouse too.

Notice the ar grip too, as it has no dove tail. I'm probably going to go to wanstalls today as they have a few grip options.

Unless incubus has a doveless ar grip sitting in the back?

So here's what I started with.
The new LHG from t97.ca, and a nicely built t97.

I was hoping to get out to shoot today, but I have a meeting in half an hour, and hockey tonight.
So tomorrow will be the day!!!

Here's a wee history of my t97.

We went from this in late 2013.

So after months of humming and hawing, I have decided on my new scope - going to try the Nikon Monarch 3 4-16x50mm with the BDC reticle. Going to see if incubus' shop can match prices I see at other stores first before I run out to get one. I seriously considered a Leupold, but the reviews of the Nikons have me more than curious to try one on my hunting rifle.

So I am also wanting a new set of compact binos for hunting/quadding/hiking. Somewhere around 8*32, maybe 9 or 10*28 - must be waterproof and shockproof would be nice. Also around $300. Anyone have any recommendations?

My cousin, who is a thousand yard shooter uses a Nikon. When you're playing in the $3-4000 range for scopes, you have a few options. He liked the fact that the Nikon was built really well, and has a great warranty.

A thousand yards.

My new scope arrived and I mounted it and went straight to the range to zero it in - but it was just one of those days where nothing was going right, including my targets getting blown over by the wind.

I seemed to have gotten it close, though. Clarity of the scope thus far seems great - more time is needed for an honest review. It's a Nikon Monarch 3 4-16 x 50mm.

When my 10/22 lost its extractor spring, Grouse River and the local gun smith couldn't figure out what I was talking about, and Del said "bring it down I've got a drawer full of springs Ill find you one." and he literally had a drawer full of different springs and picked one out. lol

Ordered my son a 20g O/U the other day, it will be one of his Xmas gifts. He really wanted to come out hunting with me this year but I think he needs another year to grow a little and also get more trigger time with an adequate gun.

I ordered this little guy, from Corwin-Arms. Martin there is a good guy, he is actually giving me the upgraded shotgun for the same price. The gun has been getting good reviews, so I think it will be a great first hunting gun. He can load bird shot in the upper barrel and a slug in the lower.

https://www.corwin-arms.com/product/ricol-20-1650-chrome-o-and-u-single-trigger-front-sight-bead-0

I also ordered their shotgun sight that I am going to actually try both on my revolver and also my long recoil shotgun. Martin never thought about the revolver application (all mine have vented shrouds) - so he is eager to here my review and will be giving a deal on another if it works for both applications.

I did the same while I was waiting for the power to come back on. I popped the primers out of my 9mm, 38 and 357 brass in preparation for tumbling. I found that the primer out allows the inside of the brass to come really clean. But you get media in the primer port.

Do you tumble with the spent primers in or out?

V2 is sick, especially in FDE.
That was my brother's big purchase last year, and it's a great gun. It's like buying an Audi. It looks sick, shoots sick, and is built with high quality in mind.

I've shot both the V2 ans the V1 and there isn't a big difference. But if you're going to make the big financial commitment that a Tavor demands, go for the freshest revision. You won't be let down.

I tumble my hand .357 and .38 brass with the primers in, the pockets stay relatively clean (compared to spent rifle brass). I'm on my third reload now and no issues so far.

My 7mm MAG rounds I will tumble with primers in, then deprime, then tumble again. I initially was hand cleaning each primer pocket and that sucked, so tumbling took out the grime and I only needed to hand clean a few. Moving forward, I will always do rifle reloading in small quantities.

I'll let ya know how that sight works - I have my hopes up.

what are your guys thoughts on ultra sonic cleaners? Thats what i use but seems like all of you guys use media tumbling. We do have a tumbler at work that some of the guy use but i usually just stick with the ultrasonic cleaner. Mind you i have a medical grade cleaner so that may be why they always turn out perfect. Been contemplating whether to try both.

Thanks, it was quite a surprise. It was suppose to be originally on Sept 3rd but the called me on the 18th and said there was a cancellation and if wanted to do it on the 20th. super short notice but i ended up getting in so that was a relief. I haven't broken it down yet to the penny, but I estimate roughly $1 per round after 200 rounds. Store bought is between $2-$3 per round

Good to hear you finally got the surgery - I always say you are only as old as your spine.

As for media/ultrasonic/wet tumbling - I think they all accomplish the same results, it just comes down to how 'clean' and shiny you want them. I watched a Jerry Michulek video where he tumbles his brass in a cement mixer - and he sets records. Pick your poison.

The only bad thing I can think of with the Ruger is the way the grip handle hangs so far back off the chassis.

I never really thought about the GSG/Sig format, the 1911 isn't really my thing, but perhaps I should consider it. Nonetheless, until I scratch the Single Six/Ten off the list I won't be making any decisions. I really liked the feel of the Buck Mark UDX in my hand - the wide and double canted trigger fealt good holding in both hands, which is what I want as I like to shoot single handed with both.

Off the list already: Ruger Bearcat, S&W 617, Bersa 22, and the Alpha S&W clone.

I wish I could give you the 1911-22 for a week so you could get to know it. It was the first pistol I that bought, pretty much on a whim. But the 1911 chassis works so well. I love the dovetail, and how the gun fits in my hand.

The buckmark is a nice piece too. There are so many choices in the restricted market right now. It's a great time to be in buying mode.

For rimfire, have you considered the charger pistol? Lots of aftermarket out there for the ruger.
