Hard no, mainly due to the uncertainty of getting completely fucked through cap recapture penalty if Luongo retires (20-21, 21-22 retirement would destroy us without Seabrook, let alone with Seabrook).

$8.5M x 1 penalty if he retires in 2021
$4.3M x 2 penalty if he retires in 2020
$2.8M x 3 penalty if he retires in 2019

I don't think Luongo will retire before his contract ends, but can't take that risk of having $15.3M in dead cap space tied up in a retired Luongo and an over-the-hill defenseman who's already a mediocre skater.

I think it's because they have mainly been focusing on the draft.

I'm really wondering who we are going to lose in the expansion draft, that's the big thing that's coming up next.

6o4__boi
06-12-2017, 08:23 AM
probably Sbisa
hopefully not Gaunce

Never gonna happen but I hope they expose Sutter, i don't understand the love for this guy
He's overpaid for a bottom six guy - $4.375 cap hit til 2021 and he's already 28, never had more than 40 pts a season

Gaunce brings better value despite having no luck with goals. Kid works hard and still has some upside.

Ben Kuzma thinks that Dim Jim might consider drafting this d-man Cale Makar of the Brooks Bandits.

Dim Jim even took Makar out for dinner. Did they go to Benning's favorite sushi place? LUL

Cale Makar a possibility for Canucks at No. 5 overall | The Province (http://theprovince.com/sports/hockey/nhl/vancouver-canucks/canucks-top-5-at-5-playmaking-point-man-makar-scores-big-at-no-5)

They could trade up, they could trade down or they could stand pat.

The only certainty is uncertainty as the Vancouver Canucks prepare for the 2017 National Hockey League draft June 23-24 in Chicago. And depending what the hockey operations department and scouting staff values in splitting evaluation hairs, the consensus that the Canucks will select a centre, should they remain in the fifth selection spot, isn’t a slam-dunk.

If the Canucks believe creative Cale Makar of the Brooks Bandits projects as a top-pairing offensive defenceman — he’s a back-to-back winner of most valuable player and top blueliner in the Canadian Junior Hockey League — scouts say that trumps any available centre predicted to play on the second line.

And if centre Gabriel Valardi is off the draft board and middlemen Cody Glass, Elias Petterssen and Casey Mittelstadt are sitting there, that’s where it’s going to get interesting.

Canucks general manager Jim Benning has two pressing positional needs — a playmaking centre and power play point man — and it’s hard to imagine he won’t take a centre. But hang on.

A year ago, the offensively challenged Canucks were so high on Olli Juolevi, they passed on winger Matthew Tkachuk and the Finnish blueliner became their no-brainer pick at fifth overall.

If Benning believes Makar is a future first-pairing possibility with Juolevi, the GM can point to the Nashville Predators’ mobile and productive back end to help sell that package potential here because Makar has already been compared to a budding Erik Karlsson.

“It’s the rarity of the position,” said Shane Malloy, who has scouted NHL prospects for a dozen years, is the author of The Art of Scouting and co-host of Hockey Prospects Radio on Sirius XM, NHL Network Radio and TSN Radio. “The two positions that are the most rare are an offensive defenceman and power forward.

“A guy who can move the puck, rush it and quarterback the power play — and if it all projects to the NHL level — you’d be crazy not to consider that. You have to. But it’s all about the projection and I wouldn’t be shocked if they (Canucks) took him at No. 5.”

That’s understandable.

The Canucks not only interviewed Makar during the NHL Draft Combine, Benning and Trevor Linden, the president of hockey operations, were among a four-person entourage that took the highly-touted defenceman to dinner later that night to demonstrate their heightened level of interest.

The polite and soft-spoken Makar, a team-first guy, checks a lot of competitive and character boxes.

“My parents raised me right and kept me humble as I was growing up,” said Makar. “I had to work for everything I got and I’m not a guy who likes to talk about himself. I have to give credit to my teammates and all the coaches I’ve had for sure.”

Makar has been compared to a National Basketball Association point guard because of what he does in transition, how he finds teammates and how he finishes. In his last two full seasons in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, he amassed 35 goals and 100 assists in 111 games. That alone commanded attention, but there was much more.

At the 2017 World Junior A Championship in December, he had five goals and four assists in eight games and that’s when the light bulb went on. As much as Makar set a goal to be the top-ranked defenceman for this draft, his performance at the worlds and the added attention only heighten his resolve.

Makar also assisted on both goals in the RBC Cup final but the Bandits fell 3-2 in overtime to Ontario’s Cobourg Cougars.

All that is why the 18-year-old Calgary native maintained his Central Scouting Bureau rank of North American skaters — 10th at midterm and ninth in the final assessment. The 5-foot-11, 184 pound blueliner added leg strength and quickness and that led 24 goals and 51 assists this season.

Makar has been slotted as high as third overall in mock drafts because of what he did on various stages. It was Karlsson like.

“People started comparing and I started watching highlights and saw that we have a lot of similar tendencies like breaking out the puck and walking the line,” added Makar. “Before that, I kind of looked at Shayne Gostisbehere (Philadelphia Flyers) who came out of college.

“One of the things I’ve noticed in his game is deceptiveness. It’s something I had never seen at such a high level and something I had in my game, so I kind of kept tabs on him.”

The 5-foot-11, 186 pound Gostisbehere had 46 points (17-29) in his 2015-16 rookie season — and has signed a six-year, $27 million US extension — while Makar has committed to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. He wants to follow a similar development path because he will play less and practise more and study business marketing, which runs in his family.

Maker was drafted by the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League, if you’re looking for another Canucks connection, but he has a cousin who took the NCAA route and is sold on that route.

There’s a scouting consensus that Makar is the most dynamic puck mover in this draft. Speed and creativity allow him easier zone entries, a big requirement in today’s NHL game.

Even though some doubt the competitive level of the AJHL or any other Tier 2 league — despite 13 grads advancing to this year’s Stanley Cup Final — a closer look reveals an additional challenge Makar has handled at this level. The AJHL allows six overage players and the Western Hockey League three.

“They’re bigger, stronger and faster — and maybe not as skilled — but as a smaller defenceman, you have these behemoths coming down on you on the forecheck and when they’re trying to kill you, you see how good the player is,” stressed Malloy.

“They’re gunning for him because he’s the No. 1 defenceman and yet there he still is making plays.”

Makar also made his mark during NHL Combine testing. While there’s great debate as to the validity of some of the testing in how it converts to skilled players, he finished 10th in the vertical jump.

“That shows a tremendous amount of power generation,” noted Malloy. “Most of the tests are irrelevant. The ones that make a difference in projections are the standing long jump because that’s power, the vertical jump, the agility test and the VO2 max (oxygen consumption).”

Regardless of testing debates, one this is clear. Nobody doubts Makar has passed all the crucial tests

Makar would be an excellent pick at #3 if the Canucks can somehow manage to swing a trade with Dallas. It'll still give them a pick at the 5th spot to pick one of Vilardi, Glass, Mittelstadt, or Pettersson

Problem with Makar has always been the fact that he's playing in a tier 2 junior league, so you have no idea if his stats and play is inflated because he's playing against lesser talented players. One good thing he has going for him is that the AJHL allows 6 overagers, while the CHL only allows 3, so it's possible he's also playing against bigger guys.

He's the biggest risk/reward in the entire draft, because Craig Button said he plays exactly like Erik Karlsson when he was in his draft year.

Watch Dim Jim trade next years 1st to Dallas for this years 3rd overall, proceed to continue sucking win the draft lottery next year and set Dallas up nicely for years to come. It's our destiny, we are all Canucks.

NYR Buying out Girardi - Sportsnet (http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/nhl/new-york-rangers-buy-defenceman-dan-girardi/)

A bit bittersweet, Girardi was an absolute beast for NYR. Coming up undrafted through the ECHL to the AHL where he became an NHL regular and even an all-star in the 2011-2012 season. There is no doubt that the way he played has taken a toll on his body and the way the game is going he is not worth 5.5 for another 3 years.

If he would be willing to sign a reasonable contract I would love to see him on the Canucks. He could fill the void that was left with Bieksa went to Anaheim, and would likely be retiring around the time when the Canucks should be turning the corner as far as being a competitive NHL team goes.

Girardi had 3 years left, and now his cap hit for the next 6 years will be:

2.61 (save 2.89 m)
3.61 (save 1.89 m)
3.61 (save 1.89 m)
1.11 (+1.11 m)
1.11 (+1.11 m)
1.11 (+1.11 m)

The rangers save 2.89 this coming season then 1.89 for two seasons after before incurring a 1.1 mil penalty for 3 seasons.

Solid trade for the Habs, they're window is slowly closing with price, who I think is 30 or 31. Good trade for Tampa as it opens cap signing room and if sergachev can crack their top 4 he will be an affordable good defencemen for another 2 years.

Drouin made everyone around him so much better in TB and played mostly with plugs... he was playing with Boyle as his centre most of the time and Boyle got 13 goals in 54 games last year... when Boyle went to the Leafs and didn't have Drouin anymore? No goals in 13 games...

He was also the only guy that Kucherov didn't throw under the bus as worthy of playing with from a skill perspective. As much as that whole saga said a lot about Kucherov as a teammate, it also says a lot about Drouin's skill level.

Devastator
06-15-2017, 02:51 PM
As much as everyone wants the Canucks to make the same deal for Druin. I think the whole league knew Druin only wanted to go to one place and that's MTL. So why give something up for a player who might pull another "I want a trade".

Habs have to keep wheeling and dealing they have no centres capable of utilizing the talented wingers they have. Forcing Galchenyuk or Drouin to play 1C won't work they are undersized and not a 2-way force.

Obsideon

Biggest reason it's a win for Tampa is because they have too many talented forwards. They would have been forced to open up 1 of them to be plucked by Vegas for free. Getting back a blue chip defenseman prospect that is not expansion eligible gives Tampa another slot to hold their core together.

Vancouver doesn't have that problem because we don't have enough talent to protect haha.

Man, this was a lot harder then I thought. Especially with the balancing of the salary cap. I didn't take into consideration any sort of trades teams would do to entice VGK from picking certain exposed players or any trades that other teams would make with VGK so that they can pick up an exposed player from them.

Went with Staal instead of Dumba because there is a distinct lack of good centers compared to defensemen. Also took a defenseman over a forward because every team is always looking for D, so it's easier to flip one of them for a prospect or pick (i.e. Methot over Ryan)

10 days of negotiating rights really isn't worth much, though. Rights were generally equivalent to a 4th round pick before the 2013 CBA.

And, let's face it, a guy of Oshie's talent can pretty much go wherever he wants to; not sure an expansion team is at the top of his list unless they're willing to pay substantially more than everyone else (in which case, they don't need the rights, anyways).

Just as I expected, essentially no or little change. Man this was a great opportunity in my opinion to change it up. I won't even go as far as saying get rid of the Orca, bring back the skate or rink jersey being the mid 30's guy that I am. I get why the Orca is still here and I've accepted that it won't be gone ever or not for a long time. With that said, something could have been done whether it was the colors, incorporate JC in a bigger way while still keeping the Orca somehow or something I don't know but this is just stupid.

Per Bob McKenzie

It was suggested to me FLA's deal with VGK MAY actually be for Vegas to end up acquiring both Marchessault and Rielly Smith (also exposed).

there's been talk FLA was trying to move both Marchessault and Smith even before VGK entered the picture. there's been chatter that VGK have been talking about "secondary" expansion draft trades involving Marchessault/Smith.

Does that mean VGK will get Marchessault/Smith from FLA and subsequently move one or both?

Agreed, I can understand negotiating draft picks to not pickup certain players off the unprotected list but they shouldn't be able to trade the players they take from existing teams for 1 year or even until halfway through the season which would curb a lot of the bullshit.

Torts was terrible for the Canucks, doesn't matter what he did/does elsewhere. Also, he's a one-time Stanley Cup coach and a two-time Jack Adams winner.

Jack Adams is basically the coach of the team who exceeded expectations by the most.

Big trade, not as big as Hall for Larsson but still big.
Why didn't Oilers get a Dman back instead?

We'll see who has the last laugh at the draft tomorrow. I'm confident that Benning will draft good players for our team.

Jack Adams winners usually also have a goalie that is a finalist or winner of the Vezina

Why didn't Oilers get a Dman back instead?

They're not as bad on D as we might think. They did well and are mostly intact for next year.

Where they had a pressing need was top 6 scoring (I know I know).

All playoffs they had a conundrum- play Leon with Connor or have Leon play second line center and support a line mostly by himself. By adding Strome who can play either RW or C it adds another swingman who can take a center spot so the Oilers can stack their first line. Or if they need more scoring depth, play Connor-Leon-Strome 1-2-3 or have Strome play somewhere in the top 6 as a winger. The trade makes them more dangerous up front with extra versatility. Eberle did mostly nothing all season (and especially all playoffs), and he most definitely cannot play center.

tl;dr: Van is going to be swept by the Oil in their season series.

^ Also frees up 3.5 mil cap space. They need to get Leon and Conor signed

m3thods
06-22-2017, 10:27 AM
^ Yup this too. Makes lots of sense for the Oil on multiple fronts.

Plus Eberle needs a change of scenery. All of the old young guys who were given the keys to the team were ruined by the recent stretch of horrible Oiler hockey. Hopefully Eberle can find some chemistry with JT because it's been a while since JT has had a bonafide scorer available to him (aside from himself lol)

From what I've gathered with JT (including wondering why the hell he would sign that extension) is that he's extremely loyal to the Isles but just wants to see progress. If they can pick up an actual goalie they don't have a bad team (and their defence is relatively good and young).

Personally if I was JT I'm going into free agency and either chasing a championship, or getting paid to play somewhere else that has a better chance than NYI. That leaves more than half of the teams in the NHL. But unfortunately I'm not JT :(

Lol, my poker buddy Kirk was sitting in Crosby's seat right before this dressed like a scrub as a seat filler. He was wearing shorts, a button up shirt and flip flops among all these guys in suits.

To quote him from FB when he was asked what the seats cost him.

"The 3 great ones , Wayne , McDavid and I....
Also it was free , didn't even pay $17...
Paid for 2 beers I grabbed one for Carl Haglin before Crosby tapped me on the shoulder for the seat..."

He also gets a text from his mom halfway through, dad was channel surfing and seen you on TV, what are you doing on TV and why are you dressed like a bum?
