After the Heiskanen n Makar deals, i feel like Hughes will get alil more than he would of gotten before those deals were signed. Benning has alot of work to do, signing Petey, Hughes, Garland, Dickinson. And possibly moving Holtby, Schmidt and finding a 4C and Right side D

Some team will give Jake a shot. Too much untapped potential. I honestly rooted for the guy hoping he'd pan out. When he's on his game he's arguably the best player on the ice. Such a waste of talent if he doesn't sort his shit out

No team in the NHL will take him given his current civil situation.
He best go to the KHL where he can be friends with Leipsic.
What a waste of talent, the skill was there but it was no one's fault but his own.

Never say never. Evander Kane with his issues still has a job. Patrick Kane after his Taxi incident and his rape case still played. Granted those 2 players gave on ice results. Like I said if he sorts his shit and gets his act together someone will give him a shot

The problem is, everyone knows he’s too dumb to ever reach his full potential. He’s not the type of player that just has to go shoot pucks in his garage to take his game to the next level. He’s likely already peaked
So you’re signing a player you know is going to be a bottom 6 forward who is also a defensive liability

The Garland signing is such a massive win. Getting him under 5 is incredible!! Best part is if we signed Toffoli last summer this wouldn't of happened. Garland is younger, a lot quicker and has so many intangibles that Toffoli doesn't have it makes it worth not signing him now.

That is correct, being qualified basiclly means nothing other then they are still trying to work out a deal. In the mean time any team can jump in with an offer sheet.
This is how the numbers work on offer sheets
$6,166,097 - $8,221,463 - 1 First Round Pick, 1 Second Round Pick, 1 Third Round Pick
$8,221,464 - $10,276,829 - 2 First Round Picks, 1 Second Round Pick, 1 Third Round Pick
$10,276,830 - 4 First Round Picks
Since these numbers and picks have come out every team has matched an offer sheet a player as signed. I love Petey have a jersey of his but man the way Seattle looks it might be worth it not to match an offer sheet if we would get the next 4 first round picks.

As much as getting high picks back I feel not matching an offer sheet and letting Petey walk may fracture the psyche(sp) of the team. They let it known how unhappy they were losing Tanev and Marky. Maybe this is where the Sedins step in and convince Petey to take a bit less and stay and build a contender much like they did themselves

What I noticed are former players or former executives likes the deal for the Canucks and feel it's a complete win. Even some media members feels the same. Then there are the regular media folks who talks about the end years of the OEL contract.
How I see it is this.
Taking Edlers $6 mil and Sutter $4.6 mil ($10.6) for Garland $4.95m and OEL $7.25m ($12.2M). At the same time take away $12m of dead capspace of Louie, roussel, and beagle. for draft picks.
Team is better overall. Just need to refine the back end.

Latest free agent signings:
Brandon Sutter will return to the team, according to multiple reports, but at a reduced rate from his previous contract. The new contract, which was reported by Thomas Drance of The Athletic and confirmed by TSN’s Bob McKenzie, is a one-year deal worth $1.125 million.
The other free agent signing is Jaroslav Halak, according to ESPN’s Kevin Weekes. The 36-year-old Slovakian is set to sign a $1.5 million contract to replace Braden Holtby as Vancouver’s backup goaltender. The deal, Weekes reports, also carries $1.5 million in potential performance bonuses.

I don't think these types of comments are taken into consideration enough when GMs make trades. Synergy is real, and sometimes you just can't replicate chemistry, even if on paper, another player is superior/better.
Poolman played 22-24minutes on WPG, so from the looks of it he has the stay at home D for the first or second pairing... hopefully he plays well with OEL or Hughes..

Maybe an unpopular opinion, but I feel with the disparity in taxation laws from place to place AND the currency differences, the salary cap should only count a form of post-tax dollars against the cap.
Vancouver, for example, literally has to pay someone 40% more than Tampa Bay would if the player was looking strictly at his bottom line (and I couldn’t fault him if that was the case to be honest).

Hamonic - He was actually recovering from his injuries last year and as others have said, he was becoming one of our top D at the end of the season. 3m is fabulous for a 2nd pairing dude, especially vs. what some other D got. (elder at 3.5, Goligoski at 5 to name a few.)
Sutter - Can't go wrong with 1M for a 3rd/4th line C and PK. This is the type of $ we should be spending on our 3rd/4th line. Much better than the $3m beagles/roussels/etc...
Poolman - That's my reaction too lol. It looks like he played a lot with Morrissey which would account for the high # of minutes over the last few years. But according to WPG fans, he's nothing more than a 3rd pairing D... if that's true then he's the new JB special lol.
Also, some depth signings with Hunt, Dowling, Di Giuseppe, all on min contracts (thankfully).

Brock is a great young player and he may have led the team in points but he isn't dynamic or a creator like hughes or pettersson are. Hughes and Pettersson are worth throwing everything and the kitchen sink at but Brock should be one tier below them (although I'm sure some team will offer him 9 if he were ever to hit the market as an UFA).

Seems like the signing came out of left field, all these great moves by Benning then he caps it off by throwing another 4-year contract at a relatively unknown plug.

Any team with a top 3 goalie, a top 3 defenceman, and a top 5 forward has a pretty damn good chance in a playoff setting.
And I'm being extremely generous, as I think Vas is the best goalie, Hedman the best defenceman, and Kucherov is the 2nd/3rd best forward (after McDavid and tied with Mackinnon). Throw in Point who's probably top 10.
68style

Point gets underrated cuz he kinda half-asses his way though every regular season (you know he's capable of so much more)... then it's balls to the wall in the playoffs.

If she was family or a good friend, I'd try to convince her to leave the guy. Love him or not, bottom line is, it's going to be a nightmare to go through life with someone who has no control. Lots of chatter about Pettersson's "I want to play for a winner" comment but I for one love it. It's refreshing to see someone upfront about a player's intentions, especially when it aligns with the fan base. As a bonus, if he wants to win, then he should also understand that he needs to take a little bit less than he should to build a winner.

I know personally I'm pretty sure I've made the comment on here that I was "ok with" another throw away season but really it was less "ok with" and more "expect and content with" because up until it actually happened I had zero faith in the ability of Jim to be able to get rid of those contracts on his own but shit I was proven wrong.
Not bugged by Peteys comments and I don't think anyone should take that as indication of not wanting to be here. I mean realistically unless someone trades a big contract away what winner has the money to even get him. Excited for the new season let's go boys!

No issue with what Petey said, the BIG question is whether he thinks this is the team where he has that good chance of winning? The roster is better than last year for sure but is this team 3-4 years away realistically to contend for SC? And if he is willing to be part of the process. I mean look how Giannis stuck with it with the Bucks. Look at McDavid who hasn't even sniffed 2nd round playoffs ... not to mention all those 'star' players in Toronto who have more games under their belt than Petey. How long for Ovi before he won ... how many disappointing playoff exits?
Alpine
08-11-2021, 08:40 PM
He doesn’t mean a guaranteed win, he means to be able to compete against the best (ie. make the playoffs and be competitive in them).
Giannis’s team made big moves to try and improve, and they were one of the top teams in the league. Same thing as Ovi. He always had a competitive team that was always at or near the top of the conference.
The McDavid or the Toronto situation is what Petey wants to avoid - a team that can squeak into the playoffs, but doesn’t really stand a chance.
I think JB’s bold moves this off-season is a step in the right direction for someone like petey.
RiceIntegraRS
08-11-2021, 11:23 PM
I have no issues with what Petey said at all. Its pretty clear that this is about term. Petey wants options and GMJB doesnt want to let him walk to FA without buying UFA years. Pettersson is a pretty smart guy so he probably doesnt have that much faith in GMJB to make this team as competitive as he wants the team to be. But u dont have to be smart to figure that out. A major percentage of the fanbase thinks Benning is a terrible GM, u think petey is blind to this?
6thGear.

Management must realize they can't be wasting the prime years of this teams stars anymore. Dickinson signed for 3 years $2.65M AAV. According to capfriendly, that leaves us with $10.65M to split between Petey and Hughes. With Brock making $5.8M, that definitely doesn't seem fair for two cornerstone players of our franchise. Benning needs to fix this mess before we lose either or both of them.
Word is that term is the main issue outside of cap problems. Petey and Hughes want a contract that walks them to free agency. JB obviously wants to lock them up long term.

That number isn’t right as it includes like a 24 man roster without petey and Hughes signed…if they want to run 22 players they got about 17.3m not including ferlands cap hit…they can do at least one long term…maybe both but it’ll be tight

their agent also said that theyre talking >5 years for Hughes and <5 years for Petey....that would not walk them to UFA's exactly...Hughes would be a UFA in 5 and Petey in 4 right now...it sounds like Hughes wanted something longer like 7-8 years and they were looking at the Barzal deal as a comp @ 3 years for Petey....but thats prob all changed now that there's got more cap space and a definite number to work with
I wonder if a long term deal can be had for Petey @ ~9.5M and Hughes @ ~8M

with both EP and QH, we'd have 26 players. if you send 3 league minimum guys down, that's 2mil freed up, add ferland's 3.5mil, and the 10.5mil space we have left right now, that's 16mil for both players. I think that's very doable.
I really don't think money is the issue, it most likely is a term problem. If you look at the roster and see who got signed/extended this year, and who has NTC, it's easy to figure out which players are the only ones that could be moved in order to make cap space. EP and QH would know that asking for too much would mean Bo/Brock/JT might get moved, which would not help their chances of winning.

Next year cap is still an issue too, don't forget. We have cap recapture on the buyout of Holtby and Jake. Luckily, Luongo's recapture is finally over in '22/'23 season.
I was listening to Dickinson's interview on 650 and he talked about what number he was going to wear. He mentioned that he always wore 11 but for obvious reasons he's not going to wear it.
I looked into it because I didn't know what the obvious reason was then came to this wiki:
The Vancouver Canucks claimed Maki in the 1970 NHL Expansion Draft. The feisty winger caught on with the team and became one of the franchise's first stars, being among the team's leading scorers both of his full seasons with the team. Maki played two-and-a-half seasons with Vancouver until being diagnosed with brain cancer in December 1972. He died on May 12, 1974, aged 29. The Canucks unofficially retired his number 11 jersey until Mark Messier, who had worn number 11 with the Edmonton Oilers and New York Rangers, joined the team in 1997. The Canucks allowed Messier to wear the number over the protest of Maki's family.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wayne_Maki
Props to Dickinson and just cements how much of a fucking asshole Messier was/is.
Fucking Messier. Such a douche. There's a special place in hell for assholes like him. Gawd, I hate that cunt. What he did to Trevor Linden and the Canucks. Then for the Canucks to hire Keenan and bring that dipshit here, adding insult to injury.
Hate is a very strong word and I only hate a handful of people. Messier and David Suzuki at the top of the list.

Not a big surprise with Kotkaniemi. They healthy scratched him in the finals. Apparently he had spoken to someone after signing the offer sheet saying that he had felt that he had already played his final game in a Habs jersey.
It'll be interesting to see what MTL does next. They absolutely need to fix their depth in the middle now. Probably going to be a big trade coming soon.

100% Benning's fault on this. Wasted money on retaining JV, let Toffoli walk. Cap issues and couldn't keep Toffoli? Also Benning's fault.
68style

^ I agree from that time... but if we had Toffoli, we probably wouldn't have been able to do the OEL/Garland trade with salary dump too... nor would we be able to afford both Petey and Hughes without the salary dump...
I mean nobody knows how all that stuff would have turned out, but I think this team is better structured now than it would have been even with Toffoli being a great player.
I WILL say though... that if we had kept Toffoli... I would have hoped Pearson would have been gone...................... but I wouldn't give Benning that much credit.
I would definitely say our team would be better with Toffoli instead of Pearson if that scenario had been allowed to play out.

I think JB wanted to keep both but needed to move money. If they were able to do OEL deal that year, they could've kept one of the ufa's...(ie move louie/beagle/roussel).
Basically Garland is our Toffoli now...

I don't think any team will take JV with that civil suit pending.
I bet his agent reached out to all teams and he had no choice but to go KHL for one season.
Maybe by next year his civil matter will be over and another team might take a chance on him.
EvoFire
09-09-2021, 12:25 PM
How far can that civil suit go with no actual legal charges?
I agree that no team would take on that baggage if they don't need to, especially with the ongoing #metoo thing. JV18 isn't good enough for that, and even if he's say Eichel level of talent I'd hesitate to say any team would pay him market for the negative PR.

I believe Ferland has to come to camp and not be medically cleared to play and be placed on LTIR so he can still be paid. Then we would have the cap space to sign Petey and Hughes. Thats what i think is going on. We have 10.6mil in cap space and another 3.5 from Ferland. 14mil between Hughes and Petey sounds about right on a short term deal.

The impression is/ was on the 650 was he's concerned about signing long term and potentially still be on a losing team here. With a short term deal if the team is still bottom dwellers he can leave once his contract is done.
