I was about to post the same. Hughes and Petey are on the upswing of their prime. We can't waste the next 3-5 yrs on a rebuild. However if the team is still shit, that's when the timeliness lines up for an actual rebuild.

The problem with the Canucks' defence is that the two veteran d-men on this team are some of their worst players.

Tyler Myers is a 6 foot 8 foot marshmallow. -softer than a roll of Charmin toilet paper.

Forget about being a shut down defenceman. Myers won't even use his size to clear out opposing players in front of Demko on a consistent basis.

I remember a recent road game that the Canucks played against Nashville.

A Preds forward had multiple chances to score on Silovs because Myers just stood in front of the goalie instead of putting that Nashville player's ass on the ice!

Sure enough, that Nashville player scored a goal by being able to stand in front of the goalie.

OEL plays out of position frequently. A big minus player on the team.
A cap hit of $8.25 million and Myers average annual salary of 6 million per season make these underachieving bozos hard to trade away.

OEL also has a full no trade clause.

It doesn't matter that much if the Canucks acquire Hronek if the team still has dead weight with Myers and OEL on the team.

Who is the shut down defenceman for the team? Can Hronek do the job as a shut down d-man and contribute offensively?

Tocchet mentioned that Hronek has a bomb of a shot at the point. How good a defender is Hronek though?

He thinks a deal would have to be extremely complicated, involving 2 other processes: 1) finding a young C around the league, maybe PIT trading for that player and then trading it to Van, or a three way deal with another team. 2) Pittsburgh would have to think about what their roster would look like after acquiring Miller’s salary.

Well he's still got 3 years on his contract and Drais has 2. They made a good move to grab Ekholm and that should continue to pay off for years to come (his own play + mentorship). McDavid is 26, Drais is 27, RNH is 29, Hyman 30, Kane 31. Nurse 28, Ekholm 32. Their core is all in their prime and they should be a threat for the next 2-3 years. The big question is if He & Drais will re-sign in 2+ years, when their core might be on the downside of their careers...

What do you guys think of the Play In format for playoffs that the NBA uses ... would it work in NHL? It seems more exciting and you include 2 more teams in to the mix. Almost always 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th seeds are pretty close and it seems like an exciting way to get the playoffs started. It works like this and the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th team has a bit of a run off to settle 7th seed and 8th seed for the usual playoff format.

NBA Play-In Tournament
The NBA Play-In Tournament commences after the regular season and before the playoffs begin. This tournament features a game between the 9th and 10th-seeded teams and the 7th and 8th-seeded teams. The play-in tournament format follows the structure:

9th vs. 10th winner will face loser of 7th vs 8th
9th vs. 10th loser out of contention
7th vs. 8th winner will automatically be the 7th seed in their conference and faces the number two seed in the first round of the playoffs

At this point, he's a top 5 centre. Bedard MIGHT be better than him, but it's unlikely anyone else from this draft year will. Then you have Hughes, who is already a top 10 D and it will be hard for another d from this draft (or a future draft) to be better. Then we have a true #1 in demko. Rebuilding and trading these guys away was always dumb. JB gave us 2 top 10 players in their position. He rushed the rebuild, but the core is still there.

The draft this year is supposedly deep. I don't know how that translates to how many players will be Pettersson or Hughes caliber within the first round, or what kind of talent will still be available after top 10.

But drafting is sometimes a crap shoot, so I kind of get it why management is reluctant in trading away established proven players in hopes of refilling those same roles by chance. You could get another Pettersson (we did!), or another JV or OJ... and those were relatively early picks.
