Fuck Sekeres. As much as people compare the team to the Avs. Sakic inherited 3 x top 3 first round picks in Duchene (Traded for Byram / Girard), Landeskog, and Mackinnon.
At that time, the Canucks had Bo. Now imagine if we use our current roster and replace Bo with Mackinnon or Boeser with Landeskog. Our team looks way different.

Say what you want but Sakic did do a fantastic job but no question they got lucky. This day and age you really need to get lucky to win the cup and the Canucks haven't been all that lucky for a long time now.

Not just the Canucks. All Canadian teams. However didn't the Colorado Avalanche refuse to get the President Trophy this year and allow the Panthers to get it? I thought I read an article about it. Anyhoo it worked, they are the Stanley cup Champs.
highfive
06-28-2022, 10:13 AM
i agree. They got really lucky. Ottawa's trade was supposed to be a bottom tier draft pick. Imagine us trading Miller to NYR and they end up being at the bottom of the standing next season.
But Sakic was awesome in picking Toews for 2 x 2nd rounders and burkakovsky / nushkinin for cheap.
Barrie for Kadri was good too and able to have Kadri to succeed in Colorado.

Forever... Canucks have never been lucky since literally day 1.
I mean... lost the first overall to Buffalo upon entering the league... all the way up to things like Luongo's recapture BS... and what were we missing in 2011? A top 4 dman that was healthy to solidify things? Our top D prospect that should have been playing in that role literally DIED. What other team does that ever happen to?

Makes qualifying Boeser for 7.5m with HALF the point production of Fiala (46pts vs 85pts) so much more painful :(
Alpine
06-29-2022, 02:30 PM
Is it just me or is anyone else surprised that the cap hit is so low?
Looking at the widespread adoption of analytics, are we going to see young players/draft picks increase in value? Are GMs going to start to tighten up their purse strings when signing these long-term contracts, especially for players on the tail end of their prime?

This actually bodes well for resigning Boeser / Miller / Horvat if Fiala only got 7.875m. But on the flip side, if that's all Fiala got in a trade then we need to temper our expectations for any Boeser / Miller trade...
Liquid_o2
06-29-2022, 02:39 PM
Fiala was an RFA and Minny didn't have the cap space to sign him. Any offer from a team would be slightly lower due to this. Miller still has one year of control at a low cap hit.

You could also make the same argument that other teams know that we are in a similar situation with Miller / Boeser. They know we don't have the space to sign him, boeser, and horvat. Miller is also at the tail end of his prime, and while he has 1 year left on his contract, he becomes a UFA, not a RFA. A team would lose all rights once Miller becomes a UFA.

That's awesome news. Signing for less than his QO means he really wants to stay here and help the club deal with the cap crunch JB fucked us with. Players taking less than market value is exactly what we need to build a more competitive roster. I hope they can do the same with Horvat and Miller. Yes, Miller would fetch some good returns but losing his presence immediately makes our team worse by a pretty spectacular margin. We don't have center depth.

I am super surprised by that, I thought Bones was going to retire
I do not think Boeser took less than market value FWIW... just his qualifying offer was ridiculously high... he sort of did us a favour letting us sign him for multiple years instead of forcing us to use the Q.O.... but even at this price tag it's far beyond what he produced this year. I hope he bounces back.

Its a fair deal. Considering what he had to deal with last season with his father, last season was an off year for him. 20goals 45pts is the worse case scenario prodcution were getting out of him.

Reports saying that the Canucks are offering absolute maximum 6 year term to Miller and his agent wants no less than 8... sounds like they won't be able to get a deal done. Might be his last day as a Canuck :(
murd0c
07-07-2022, 08:05 AM
and I'm sure the money is at least a million off from what Miller wants as well. I have a feeling it's his last number of hours being a Canuck and I so hope we can get a nice haul for him. Lets cross our fingers and hope the Rangers finally cave and include Schneider in the package.
68style

They're kinda silly not to, their D corps is already ridiculous, they can definitely afford to lose a guy even if it's a top prospect.
murd0c
07-07-2022, 08:17 AM
especially their right side. They gave up a first round pick for Copp and he played how many games? Ideally they should trade Schneider, Kakko and maybe their 2023 2nd round pick (I can't see this year since they don't have a first) I would be happy with that trade and think its more then fair.

Kaapo Kakko? Copp? Maybe their d-man Schneider?

I am sure there are many other teams besides the Rangers that have offers being sent to Allvin.
Perhaps New Jersey?
murd0c
07-07-2022, 08:26 AM
I think with the Rangers the Canucks want Schneider but they are still not willing to move him. No question NJ is in the mix and along with the Canes. I could honestly see Meyers getting traded to the Blue Jackets as well. With such a unique draft this year its going to be very interesting and hopefully exciting for us.
Hondaracer

None of those rangers roster players make us better than with JT
murd0c
07-07-2022, 08:37 AM
they might not make us better this very second but it will open up cap space, the protentional for them to break out in the next year our two when the Canucks should hopefully be in the window to compete is key here. The Canucks can't afford Miller and signing him to a contact that expires when he's 38 is a bad move.
teggy604
07-07-2022, 08:39 AM

pastarocket
07-07-2022, 08:49 AM
I also think that Allvin and his staff are definitely at the team's salary cap situation and managing it the best they can besides looking at trade offers for Miller.
Dim Jim fucked up the team's salary cap structure so bad, that potential trades with other teams for Miller are gonna have to be looked at very closely in terms of salary.
We still have Lu's cap recapture penalty to pay off for one more season, the upcoming season.
https://puckpedia.com/LuongoRC
Vancouver
Luongo played all of the 2010-2011 to 2012-2013 seasons with Vancouver, so the Recapture Benefit (Total Paid less Total Cap Hit) during that period is 100% allocated to Vancouver ($7,430,001).
For the 2013-2014 season, his total recapture benefit (Total Paid less Cap Hit) is $1,380,667. He was traded on March 4, 2014 to Florida, with 15% of his contract retained by Vancouver.
Therefore, Vancouver's portion for the 2013-2014 season is 100% of the recapture benefit for 154 of 195 season days ($1,380,667 * 100% * 154/195 =$1,090,373) plus 15% of the recapture benefit for the remaining 41 days of the season he was with Florida ($1,380,667 * 15% * 41/195 =$43,544). The total recapture benefit incurred by Vancouver in 2013-2014 is $1,133,917.
The recapture benefit from 2014-2015 through 2018-2019 is $3,571,335. Since Vancouver retained 15% in the trade, their portion is $3,571,335 * 15% = $535,700.
Vancouver's total recapture benefit over the contract is $9,099,618 (the total of the amounts above). Since he has 3 years remaining on his contract, that total is divided by 3. Therefore, Vancouver's Cap Charge over the next 3 years is $3,033,206 per year

Alpine
07-07-2022, 09:38 AM
I think the Letang signing has more to do with the total $ (36.6m) ... I don't think anyone expects him to play until he's 41 but it was how Pittsburgh was able to structure his contract to make the cap hit work.

I rather have laf than kakko. Kakko looks more like a middle six winger than a top line guy. Miller needs to be traded for a top line guy i feel.

No, last year was the final year of Luongo's recapture... he's finally gone.

Wow, the centre that the Canucks drafted in the fourth round today is a big player with skill:
https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/canucks-hockey/canucks-4th-round-pick-daimon-gardner-is-a-64-two-way-centre-5562958??utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=snd&fbclid=IwAR3KWsTODAOUc2iCm6rSixfCbVUKwtqTvv3rBfPIy cZj3S2GVFf_IJDhvmQ&mibextid=vgW32m&fs=e&s=cl
The Vancouver Canucks added some size in the fourth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft.
With the 112th pick of the draft, the Canucks selected Daimon Gardner, a 6’4” centre who played in the Minnesota High School circuit last season.
Gardner doesn’t just have enviable size, however, as he combines it with some serious skill. He racked up 45 goals and 83 points in just 30 games with Warroad High last season, making him one of the top scorers in Minnesota.
Elite Prospects rated him the highest heading into the draft, landing him at 54th overall, as they love his intelligent game and how he’s constantly looking to get to dangerous areas on the ice.

Good read. In short, it's hella hard to make it into the NHL ... I mean even if you excel in minor league and you make it into the draft (which is pretty damn good), only about 60 players (on avg) from any year's draft make it into an NHL roster! There are the exceptions who were not drafted that had a long NHL career but those are super rare.

The Maple Leafs have acquired Matt Murray in a trade with the Ottawa Senators as Toronto looks to restock its goaltending depth.
The trade is for future considerations. The Senators are also sending a third-round pick in 2023 and a seventh-round pick to Toronto.
The Senators are retaining 25 per cent of Murray's salary $6.25 million annual cap hit (and $15 million in total salary) for the next two seasons,

Umm, New Jersey's a state not a city.
The Devils play in Prudential Center, Newark which is just a 20 min drive from Manhattan. And if you don't want to live the city life you have a ton of live in a fancy house in the suburbs. Tampa Bay is mental, all of their extensions they're signing dont kick in until next year... but even right now they're 6.5M over the cap for the 22-23 season and probably have to trade Killorn and Cole for nothing before the season starts...

Tampa got secret sauce to circumvent cap ... called LTIR during regular season and miraculous healing in game 75 of the season.

I read somewhere that a good chunk of the Canucks cap room is because Michael Ferland's 3.5 million salary is part of that room. He is on LTIR because of concussions.

Sharks have made some really odd decisions... rebuilding team, but they didn't even qualify Dahlen (therefore bringing to close all the Canucks fans complaining we gave him away for nothing) and buying out Balcers who, at least when we played against them, seemed like a pretty tenacious and skilled checker...
Add in giving Burns away for absolutely nothing in return... yikes...

I like the free agency moves that Allvin has made so far.
They addressed some of the team needs: A right hand shot forward, team speed, and physicality.
Lazar is a right handed centre. -also a local guy from Salmon Arm. -good for Curtis to play closer to home.
Mikheyev is a speedy winger with scoring touch.
Dakota Joshua adds size and physicality as a bottom six forward. Allvin mentioned to reporters today that he watched Dakota play some games as a St. Louis player.

If these terms are true, then it's about the same $$ value for Goudreau. Calgary offered $10 x 8 yo. Apparently, he wanted closer to be with family in the East but Columbus ??!!

It's actually a pretty huge difference. Canada is fucked for hockey players...
Nearly 40% income tax in Canada? Compared to Ohio income tax tops out at 4.7%.
We just can't compete up here honestly...

Chicago is positioning themselves to land Bedard in 2023 it seems. I don’t blame them, really. The timing works out for them nicely and they saw what Toews and Kane brought the organization.
If I were running the Kraken I’d be doing the same tbh. Land Wright then Bedard and you’re golden for 5-10 years. Even if you have to trade one the return should fill whatever gap(s) you need to fill.
If the Canucks didn’t have such a solid, young core I’d be on team tank as well.

-found out some more news about the possible rationale behind Gaudreau’s decision to sign with Columbus.
Apparently, Johnny’s wife is a pediatric nurse.
Columbus, Ohio has one of the best pediatric hospitals in the US.
-quite likely that Gaudreau chose Columbus because he took his wife’s career into consideration.
Some NHL players do take family into consideration besides the team’s competitive level when they decide on which team that they want to play for as free agents.
Mind you these comments are coming from a guy who posted comments about a Daily Shit article about Gaudreau.

If this is the case, I applaud Johnny G for supporting his wife's career ambitions. Pediatric nurse is a very important role in healthcare ... dare I say, much more important than an NHL hockey player. If you ever have a kid sick in a Children's hospital ... tell me which of the Goudreau would you appreciate more. It's not always about the $$.

Honestly, I think that Gaudreau helped the Canucks indirectly by signing with the Blue Jackets.
I think that Jersey and the Islanders showed interest in signing him. Gaudreau is from NJ.
He had a chance to live closer to his home town.
You would think that Jersey and the Islanders GMs would continue to show interest in trading for Miller now that one of the bigger name players in free agency signed with Columbus.
The list of available free agent forwards is smaller now.

The Athletic did an interview with Gaudreau, he listed some of his reasons:
COLUMBUS, Ohio — It will go down as one of the most memorable days in franchise history, the moment when the Blue Jackets not only landed the biggest name in this year’s free agent crop but also perhaps the moment when the rest of the NHL began to see the city in a different light.
Johnny Gaudreau had his pick among NHL clubs, from major metropolitan markets to hockey-crazed Canadian cities. The highly skilled left winger, coming off a 115-point season, could have had a bigger payday by staying with the only NHL club he’s ever known, the Calgary Flames.
But in a move that stunned hockey fans everywhere — especially those in central Ohio — Gaudreau, 28, chose the Blue Jackets to spend the prime of his career, signing a seven-year, $68.25 million contract with Columbus on Wednesday. The deal will pay Gaudreau $9.75 million each season, which is also the cap hit. Gaudreau also has a no-move clause for the first four years, then a limited no-trade clause in the final three years.
Why did Gaudreau pick Columbus? How did the Blue Jackets, who’ve never advanced past the second round of the playoffs, land one of the NHL’s star players?
Gaudreau said the Blue Jackets were on his list before the free agency period opened, based on the experiences he’s had playing in Nationwide Arena and on conversations he’s had with current and former Blue Jackets, who raved about it.
“I’d never been to Columbus before until I made it to the NHL, so when I started playing there I didn’t know what I was walking into, and I was just … ‘Wow!'” Gaudreau told The Athletic by phone late Wednesday. “They’ve always had great crowds, really into the game. I said to myself then, ‘This looks like a really fun place to play.’
“But it was more than that. I played in the (world championships) with Zach Werenski. I’ve known Eric Robinson for like 15-20 years. And some former guys, like Cam Atkinson and Dalton Prout … those guys were just like, ‘You’re going to absolutely love the place.'”
Gaudreau joked that his contentious relationship with the Nationwide Arena cannon, which blasts each time the Blue Jackets score, has already undergone a change of heart.
“That cannon kind of scares me a little bit, and I’ve had a run-in with that cannon a couple of times,” said Gaudreau, who officially will be introduced in a news conference Thursday. “I used to not want to hear it. Now I want to hear it all the time.
“Hopefully we’ll get that thing really blasting this season.”
The move has the potential to vault the Blue Jackets back into the playoff picture in the Eastern Conference after a two-year hiatus. (Yes, GM Jarmo Kekalainen plans to sign and keep restricted free agent Patrik Laine, although $5 million worth of moves will be necessary to get under the NHL’s salary cap.)
Just as important, perhaps, is what this means to the franchise off the ice. After sweeping Tampa Bay in the first round of the 2019 playoffs, the Blue Jackets have lost significant talent and gained a reputation — perhaps unfairly — for not being an attractive place to play.
Kekalainen started his conversation with The Athletic by stressing how important Gaudreau is to his vision for the club, how his presence on the ice will make the Blue Jackets a more dangerous offensive club, etc.
But it means so much more.
“I think we can finally get rid of the bullshit that this is somehow a bad destination, a bad city, whatever,” Kekalainen said. “Because it’s never been true. We got a bad rap because a couple of people decided all along that they weren’t going to be here long-term for various reasons, but it has never been about the city or the organization.
“We’ve just had to shut our mouth and deal with that, but every time I see a comment like that, I get a rash.”
The Blue Jackets have contacted big-name free agents in previous offseasons. Three years ago, they discussed an offer sheet with Toronto forward Mitch Marner, but never got it signed. Two years ago, they had conversations with veteran defenseman Alex Pietrangelo before he signed with Vegas.
Their initial contact with Gaudreau’s agent, Lewis Gross, was expected to play out in a similar fashion. The Blue Jackets had Gaudreau at the top of their wish list, and they extended an offer shortly after the window opened at noon Eastern.
Many expected Gaudreau to sign with a club close to his family home in New Jersey. Philadelphia, the New York Islanders and New Jersey were seen as favorites. But by mid-afternoon, the Blue Jackets were alerted that they were very much in the running.
Kekalainen met with the media around 3 p.m. to discuss the signing of defenseman Erik Gudbranson. It was sometime after that gathering that talks with Gaudreau and the Blue Jackets got serious.
“It kind of came out of the blue,” Kekalainen said. “Like, are you serious about this?
“Everybody’s talking about him being one of the biggest fish on the market. We always do our list and at the appropriate time we contact the people on the top of our list, but to hear back that, yeah, they’re one of the teams they want to come to…”
Calgary reportedly had offered eight years at $10.5 million per season, but Gaudreau decided early on that he wasn’t going back to the Flames. The Flyers, long expected to be the destination, didn’t make an offer, GM Chuck Fletcher told reporters, because it would have prompted other trades by Philadelphia.
New Jersey offered seven years and more than $9 million per season, per The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun.

Klingberg has been sinking like a stone in the ocean... not even remotely the same d-man anyone was watching from 2015-2018 offensively... and on a playoff worthy team last year in Dallas he was -28 defensively?
Ugly. Whoever gets him is going to overpay and regret it bigtime.

Is Kadri the real deal?
He hit his peak 6 years ago, then was on the downward spiral for quite some time, then suddenly exploded to above pt/g player. Late bloomer? Contract year?
68style

Kadri is super risky, he's never even been close to a PPG player before in his career and suddenly this year he was quite a bit over...
His shooting percentage through his career has been all over the place too... bouncing back and forth between 6% and 13% that's a huge spread.
He got a lot more assists this past year than ever before... he might be able to replicate this another year or 2... but regress back to a .75ppg guy pretty quick
