okay...I'm ONLY saying this because you asked for input...

first off...your pictures are stunning.

The only thing I noticed is (especially on the first two pics) the wheels are unevenly lit...the front wheels have beautiful definition - with the disc and the caliper clearly showing - whereas the rear is kind of in shadow...the fronts look so nice that I wish the rears were equally well-defined) that's the only thing that jumped out at me.

great work, though!

ColinK 04-10-2008 10:44 AM

yea, i noticed that after too. I find it's tough to look for things like that on such a small LCD on the camera :( Maybe I should start brining a laptop along! haha

OffroadZuki 04-10-2008 11:52 AM

for sure...what do you shoot with? I know on my 30D I can enlarge it quite a bit...

in fact...while on the subject, what was your setup that night?

ColinK 04-10-2008 11:57 AM

shooting with an xti.

Setup was sigma 17-70 2.8 and 2 vivtar 285hv flashes

OffroadZuki 04-10-2008 01:20 PM

what did you use to trigger them?

Any suggestions that I could improve on next time?

the shot i pointed out, since the lighting was pretty evenly spread out.. u can
take out the "white points" reflections of flight... just will make the image
look cleaner, i do that sometimes and u'll get an even better sense of smooth
lighting, like this....

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/27/57...9dcb91_o_d.jpg

the lighting was far from perfect for this shot.. but i cleaned up the reflection
points.

Not bad... too bad the horizon is not straight.

Good point! I'll have to edit those out next time :)

How do you go about cleaning them out? Clone/Heal tool?

ColinK 04-11-2008 08:19 AM

^ that's what I'd use...

OffroadZuki 04-11-2008 08:25 AM

I gotta get me some triggers...the infamous PT-04 or whatever?

grimbeaver 04-12-2008 06:03 PM

Hey ckrieg, how much did that flash setup cost ya?

freelunch 04-13-2008 10:01 AM

I feel that the front of the car and sides would benefit from fill flash to lift the shadows. That would also show off the detail of the brakes too. Put a diffuser on your external flash, aim it forward, and set the flash to 1-2 stops lower.

I dont think he has an external flash...

My suggestions is to shoot with the light instead of against it. Nice photos, but you have great big shadows in the front (as freelunch mentioned) and by rotating the car to have the sun hit it in the front would elminiate this.

grimbeaver 04-13-2008 02:23 PM

Yes... no external flash... its just D50 with the lens it came with... 18-55. So basically you mean turn the car 180 and take the shot with me more towards the right?

^ ugly pure ugly
haha just kiddin mat
first pic the poles are coming out of your race car

and the 2nd one the line reflection on the door is distracting. the Grass horizon doesn't really help either all the lines just chopping up your car

Ps shouldn't you be studying.. which i am not also but w.e

edit: did you purposely put your car there and frame it so it said R / S? :P

Yes, or so that the sun is hitting the angle that your camera is shooting at, so all the shadows will be on the other side of the car. Does that make sense?

grimbeaver 04-14-2008 02:17 PM

That makes sense. I'll give that a shot next time, thanks! BTW is a polarizing filter a good purchase to make?

ColinK 04-14-2008 02:32 PM

I dont know, I just bought one yesterday and havn't had a chance to play with it yet :P

^ since you're using a tripod, you can bring down the ISO :) unless that's the lowest already and it doesn't process noise that well or it was underexposed and you brought up the brightness while editing
