Levitron 07-08-2009 11:23 PM

Yup, I'm actually back home now.

I tried that lens. Didn't really like the fact that it didn't have IS. How do you like it?

Senna4ever 07-11-2009 04:49 PM

With the current FF cameras, you can boost the ISO to compensate for the lack of IS/VR without too much of a noise penalty. The 24-70 lenses from canon/Nikon/Sony are amazing optics. The canon/Nikon lenses have really smooth bokeh, but the Sony/Zeiss lens is a bit sharper, as it looks like Zeiss sacrificed a tiny bit of bokeh smoothness for ultimate sharpness. Of course, if you want a FF camera with IS/VR, the Sony A900 + the Sony/Zeiss 24-70 is currently the only way.

I love it. I had the sigma version before and the canon is much better. I couldn't stand the amount of flare and glare i was getting with the sigma. The colors looked really washed out and contrast was seriously lacking. The Canon's gigantic hood does a really good job of blocking out the sun and the colors, sharpness and contrast are way way way better. Oh, and the canon has USM... nuff said.

The Sigma wasn't a bad lens though, the Canon is just much better. However, it does cost like 3 times more. I wonder how the Sigma 24-70 HSM performs though...

Oh, and about what Senna said, on all these new FF cameras with ridiculously low noise and high ISO, IS is not really needed anymore. I do fine without IS on both my 24-70L and my 200L with my 20D. But then again, I am shooting outside the majority of the time.

Senna4ever 07-12-2009 09:39 AM

^^^ You just have to remember to adjust the ISO. Something I always forget to do when I'm using a D700 or 5DmkII.

davidhtam 07-12-2009 12:00 PM

Yeah ISO is the first thing i check on my camera now before i shoot. I was shooting at 1600 ISO outdoors one time... caught on pretty quickly though because I noticed i was shooting at 1/8000th of a second at f8 or something

Matsuda 07-12-2009 12:24 PM

heh when I first got a dslr, I was shooting at 1600 ISO during the day at granville island and couldn't figure out why everything was so grainy. Turns out the nite before my friend was playing around with the settings and set it to 1600.

Hmm... you know, it also begs for a caption...

gfunk, explanation for the 2nd picture please?

Senna4ever 07-12-2009 04:57 PM

^^ I know, I know... I posted the photo because of the content, not technical quality. I was shooting into the Sun, so the image is actually quite underexposed. I had to work some Lightroom magic to get detail back. I didn't care about perspective control or rotation.

...that's my story, and I'm stickin' to it! :p

Isn't that performance art or street art or something like that?

It's pretty much what Senna said. Along the main strip in Barcelona called Las Ramblas, there are tons of these street performers who essentially dress up and get into character by acting the part. You'll see that behind the guy taking a dump is the cat lady, and there were also others like Edward Scissorhands, Wolverine, Charlie Chaplan, and aliens and monsters

I hope you didn't get hit by errant golf balls. Haha..

Too bad you didn't have a polarizer for the sea star shot.
