For the past month I have been trying to learn photoshop better but it's pretty hard haha. Distortion..as in noise or?

You have perspective distortion, where the buildings are leaning inwards on the upper part of the image. This is caused by tilting the camera up when taking the photo. You can use the keystoning tool in Lightroom to correct it - I've forgotten how to do it in PS.

Original image:

With keystone correction before cropping:

er, you're referring to, "Lens Corrections" ? manual mode rocks.

^^^ Yep.

thanks Senna for explaining distortion with photos as well! haha

Although only thing is for me when I'm taking a picture I like to show my POV and a little tilt is what I saw :)

N.V.M. 11-30-2011 06:58 PM

i like the effect, but only if it's prominent, or obviously left there on purpose.i think your last image looks better with the buildings straightened up a bit, because it looked more like a typical lens flaw, not a wanted effect. i do think its a hell of an awesome shot too though.

I think I would prefer the image with a tungsten white balance.

Common. You can't upload a photo taken with a Hasselblad at like 1200 px wide. That's just teasing! :p

ColinK 11-30-2011 11:23 PM

On another note, The Kelowna Yacht Club asked me to take some photos of the club for their new website. Here are a couple. Thoughts? Opinions? Advice?

That image printed at full resolution (240dpi) makes a 16 foot wide print. :)

Thats awesome, your photo is like the detailed version of mine haha.
I try to extract the most out of my D3000 It's extremely limited no fancy options whistle and bells, anything over 400 ISO becomes noisy.. but the important thing is to work with what you got!

And liquidturbo what ISO and Seconds was your star shot?

LiquidTurbo 12-01-2011 10:41 PM

ISO 8000, 30seconds, @ f3.5

The D3000 sucks. It's so noisy with anything other than direct sunlight. If you're gonna do a lot of low light you might as well get the D3100, D5100, or D7000. Their ability of their sensors help tremendously in low light situations. I shot that w/ my D7000.

Of if you're rich, get the D3s :D ISO 12800 no problem!!!!! I think the D3s @ 10,000 ISO is less noisy than the D3000 at 800, no joke.

If you guys are truly interested in astrophotography, you should come out with me to a Fraser Valley Astronomy Club meet. Paul, the president of the club is the nicest guy in the world, and he'll let you mount your camera onto his massive telescope equipped with a motorized equatorial mount.

This is a 602 second exposure - the mount automatically tracks the stars. Pretty cool gear:

Paul's massive telescope. You can clearly see the cloud bands on Jupiter and 4 of its moons with this thing! Everyone uses red lights to preserve night vision.

Nikon cameras are not as good as Canon DSLRs for astrophotography, as the Sony sensors used in Nikons actually process part of the RAW file on the chip before it gets written to whatever storage medium being used - you never get a true RAW file with Nikons. This can introduce noise & unwanted artifacts to the image. Most people may not notice, but astronomers will notice.

funnily enough, I've actually spoken to Paul before - I called him to ask him for some more details about the Dark Sky Park. A bunch of us (RCubed, Matsuda, Rated-Z) have been meaning to head out there on a clear weekend night - but it's getting so cold!!! Either we've been busy or there were clouds in the sky.

I want to bring my wide angle and shoot some star trails!!

10,000 ISO!!!??? wtff lol. Although I wouldn't want to upgrade yet. I still love my D3000.. within the people I know that is into photography I know I take better pictures than most of my friends who has 60D's Mark 2's, D7000's. Mainly cause I know my camera very well :D

Cool, did Paul specifically invite you? I think the part of the park where the FVAS meet is closed to the public during meets, and is invitation only IIRC.

no, I was just asking about information about accessing the park ourselves. Apparently, the gate isn't locked during the winter time, so you can just drive right into the parking lot and set up for photos.

Senna4ever 12-02-2011 12:35 AM

Well, we should go sometime then. A clear, moonless night!
