I'm new to lighting, but is that softbox built solely for speedlights or does it usually take a bigger flash (strobe is the correct term?)? I'm wondering just how much power/light a SB600 can push through something like that. I'm just about to pull the trigger on 622Cs and some light mods, but I can't decide between shoot-through umbrella (which the Strobist recommends) or a softbox (which they also recommend, but a small one). |
With this one, it'll work with both speedlights and strobes, but I think most people use it for speedlights. I'll be using it with my speedlight for location shooting. Being an umbrella frame, the light is actually pointed facing the back of the box. The inside is reflective, and as a result, it spreads the light out within the box and then out the front diffuser. As far as power, the SB600 is down on it, but for most scenario's, I think it'll be fine. http://westcottu.com/wp-content/uploads/tent1.jpg |
Thanks for the info! More to think about w.r.t light modifiers again :( |
Does anyone have a preferred store to take their film cameras for service? Looking for a good place to service my Mamiya |

Got a quick question. Where is the highest (altitude wise) spot in Richmond, if any, that is accessible for photos? I'd like to get some shots of Richmond with Grouse in the background as well as some morning shots of Mt. Baker. |

I can't think of any notable "hills" in Richmond, as it's by default sitting on a river delta. If it's just to get Baker and you have a car, you'll have better luck taking the 91 over to Surrey for that. But since you want Richmond and Grouse, that'll be tough for most parts of the city without access to a high-rise balcony facing north. |
I'll try my own condo first but I'll have to make some calls. Where in Surrey is a good spot for such photo ops? Thanks for your input. |
I actually haven't done said Baker photos, but there are a number of "higher-elevation-points" east of the bridge. Perhaps some people in Surrey can chime in. |
Good news. I decided to see if I could get to the top of my own building, 18 stories high. I went up the stairwell and sure enough got to the rooftop door but it was locked. Key word, "was". :victory: Then I thought I'd try the next building (same complex). Sure enough...:fuckyea: I was able to get to the roof top of two buildings. I'll try the third building in my complex later. |

Found this lying around Hoya 77mm Linear Polarizer Glass Filter B77PL B&H Photo Video Anyone wanna grab it off me for 20? |
HAI GUYZ!!! Maybe someone can point me in the right direction here... I have this camera mount (or something similar) for putting my handycam in my Jeep's windshield: http://img.dxcdn.com/productimages/sku_296554_1.jpg I want some kind of "generic" quick-release for it, otherwise taking the cam off to go mobile is a major pain. DX.com has some quick-release camera plates, but they all go with specific tripods/heads... |
I think this should work? Manfrotto 323 RC2 System Quick Release Adapter with 200PL-14 323 I have this on most of my gear and it works well. |
May someone please recommend a great quality filter holding system with filters for the Nikon 14-24mm AFS f/2.8 ? |
So i got a question guys. ive had this XSi for about 3 years now.. ive bought new lenses whenever i felt i wanted something new, but lately i get a lot of feedback saying the pics are too grainy, and someone told me its because my camera is so old. What should i do ? Should i just continue buying lenses whenever i find one i want, or should i upgrade the body? im leaning more towards the body..i just wanted something newer and bigger. Been looking at the D60. |
As a very general thing, most of the improvement of going to a newer model is from things like high ISO performance - if you always shot on a tripod at ISO100 at F8, there probably wouldnt be much of a change, but in the real world, ISO is a helpful tool. If you had say a 30D I'd say forget the upgrade, but an XSi was pretty low end even when it was new. What kind of glass do you have? |
nothing crazy. my most 'expensive' purchase was a tokina 11-16 but then i sold it and currently just rocking cheap stuff lol the 18-55 kit that came with it 50mm 1.8 35-135mm f4-5.6 so nothing really expensive..i was going to do more research into whats a good all around lense for car photohraphy and some landscape pictures (preferably something in the f1.8-2.8) or an L lense but i havent looked into it so much because ive been wanting a newer body |
I shot with my brother's XSi for a few months before getting a D7000. The ISO advantages were amazing. I was able to get some decent shots at Van Dusen back in Christmas all hand-held. The XSi would've never been able to get even close. |
sorry i meant to say a 60D lol want canon not the nikon haha anyways i think ill pull the trigger and upgrade. But yes Ramon i see what you mean |
Just curious if anyone would be willing to lend me a Nikon DX 35.8 prime lens for a month when I go to Asia. If not, I'll buy one off CL and resell it after. Thanks Posted via RS Mobile |

Speedlights are good but I find them underpowered. So depending on what you use it for, I'd recommend looking into a profoto B1as well. For the price of 2 sb600's you get a battery powered profoto head that's much better built and 10x the power of 1 speedlight. Also very portable but the quality of light is much more versatile than any speedlight. The other thing I hate about speedlights is by the time you buy all the fittings and such, it'll bring the hassle and cost way up. |
