hey guys going to my gf's grad fashion show in couple weeks, but i wanna take some pics ofcourse, it'll be in their school gym so it'll most likely be a fair amount of low light except the light that shines on the stage while they model. What kind of lens do you guys recommend i use ? I only have the 50mm 1.8 and 18-55mm that came with the XSi

Ideally, you would want to keep your shutter speed around 1/80, so, adjust your ISO accordingly (I'd suggest go shutter priority and fixed that shutter)

Ultimately, if you get early access to the show and can grab a good spot, I'd even fix the focus. (set a pre-determined spot you'd shoot and leave it to MF) So, whenever the model walks to your sweet-spot, you fire the shutter.

is there a place that can process my film and scan it on a usb without developing the pictures?

I have a few roles that I just want to be downloaded on my computer.

You can find a cheap 55-250mm on craigslist for under $200.00 which will be perfect! Other then that you wont have enough reach with those lenses unless your walking about the gym and not sitting in your seat the whole time..

not sure if anyones interested at all :P

but this photographer was comparing the latest smartphones to the N8 in a camera comparison and in his opinion the N8 won http://theycallthislife.net/post/168...8-apple-iphone
and then he did a quick compare between the N8 and a Canon 40D (think all his settings are on Auto) http://theycallthislife.net/post/169...me-test-target

here's the shot think it does ok :)

I'm pretty new to editing, but how did you get rid of all the noise? I have photoshop and i've never tried Lightroom before, should I get on that? Thanks

LiquidTurbo 02-05-2012 06:15 AM

There's a noise reduction slider in Lightroom. I think for photoshop if you want to remove noise you have to use a plug in.

It does pretty good but I definitely prefer the less noisy 40D shot obviously.

Agreed ;) im just amazed at how much progres has come to cell phone cameras in a few short years and the n8successor is due later this year which is supposedly going to blow it out of the water

skyxx 02-07-2012 12:08 AM

Interesting price points.

$2999 for the D800 (Body)

$3299 for the D800E(Body with no Anti-aliasing filter)

I can certainly say from experience, you won't have ideal shutter speeds with that lens in fashion show lighting. For a 55-250, you'd want something faster than 1/80. Also given the fact that the XSi's max ISO is 1600 (and not a particularly clean 1600), that still won't be enough to get you a fast enough shutter speed.

What you can hope for is just burst everything and hope that you get a good shot- but I'd suspect you'd have a fairly low keeper rate.

You're better off using whatever lenses you have- I'd expect the runway to be stationary, so just grab a good spot early and stay there, like what was already suggested by Hehe.

Also, keep in mind that at 1.8 the DOF will be fairly shallow, so you'll probably expect soft-looking photos. My suggestion is if you want sharp faces, make sure they face you before you shoot, and just burst it to improve your chances at a good shot.

Senna4ever 02-09-2012 07:24 PM

I think Kodak sold off the film business to another company - the film department was actually profitable.

Mobile Camera Rumor Mill

So Nokia is going to be introducing the successor to their phone the N8 this year; its expected to be introduced at MWC (mobile world congress) @ the end of the month

The N8 as some of you may have noticed me speaking about in the past and just above :) (also sharing my own pics) has been dubbed the "smartphone camera king" since it was released back in 2010 and has maintained that role to date; its got the largest camera sensor in a phone 1/1.83" (large than most p&s @ the time of its release)

Anyhow the successor is known to have an actual Zoom function which was assumed to be perhaps a 1x-2x Optical zoom

but Nokia has dubbed their zoom function "TrueZoom" and the rumor is Nokia will be putting a large sensor in the phone and utilize a very high megapixel setting instead to get this zoom function working, like a backwards digital zoom i guess?

this was seen somewhat in the Nokia N8 where when recording video the digital zoom function would exhibit Zero loss in quality as the 720p video utilized the entire 12mpx camera sensor

so the rumor and early leaks of information indicates that the N8 successor will have something around 40 megapixels! to attain this "true zoom" ability

what are your thoughts on this? does the prospect of Noise make you go :heckno: or have you guys seen something similar to this in actual cameras that make you go :considered: (hmm i guess it would be kinda like those gigapixel photos no? but those make use of a tonne of sensors no?)

im rather :suspicious: but Nokia has never disappointed me when it came to their "cameraphone kings" so im pretty excited to see whats announced in a couple weeks
