whats the benefit of a shroud? just to keep the outside light sources down?
i ordered some generic wireless remote for my camera and with it came a cheapo shroud, does quality on these things matter or should i avoid using it?

If you know a friend with a photo printer, that's probably your easiest bet.
I had an HP one and it printed borderless 8.5x11 at 600dpi.
If you want to go to a store, Staples or any local print shop will be able to do it. Probably not Borderless though. If you bring your own file on a USB they'll charge you, etc., but it's convenient and quality is decent as well.
How high is very high?

First hit off google with decent images to show you a comparison. http://digital-photography-school.co...your-lens-hood
It doesn't really matter if it's cheap, as it's probably modeled off a genuine canon/nikon/whatever you have.
The Canon L-lens hoods are lined in the inside with a felt material, to absorb this light. Cheaper, but still "name brand" ones are either jagged (like some sigma hoods). The very cheapo ones will just be smooth plastic, but it should still be somewhat helpful.
Genuine hoods can be mounted backwards to reduce the overall length of the lens, some cheap ones won't do this properly. Some cheap hoods will also sometimes be very hard to put on/remove, but again, this depends on the hood you have.
Also, it's entirely dependent on your lens diameter, and usually there is one hood for one lens (again, genuine stuff), and it's not a one-hood-fits-all type deal. The design of the hood is designed corresponding to that hood's lens dimensions; if your hood is too long for the lens, it'll show up in your pictures. If it's too short, it won't be effective.
Overall, it's useful, but if it's a cheapo one, ymmv.
Hope that helps!
Oh, it also looks cooler

from what I understand, most modern lenses don't really need the lens hood. I personally keep mine on, because i carry my camera on my side (with a black rapid strap), and the lens hood will usually absorb impacts before the lens does.

yea figure if you had a hood on and dropped it it would abosrb the majority of the impact, not directly on the lense

My lens hood is more there to protect the lens, since I don't use filters.

D600 sensor dust problem sucks.
Seems like I'm not the only one. All on the top left area (edited to show dust more clearly.
Seems to be the shutter curtain scratching onto itself. Once broken in, problem goes away. |

| I read that too, that after a few thousand clicks, it should start to get back to normal. Part of it they said may be over oiling or something along those lines.
