Rusty's Pub
17770 56 Avenue, Cloverdale

Been here before and, as usual, the service was pretty decent. The live music was great and despite the fact that there was a giant fundraiser going on in the other half of the pub, the server was still fairly attentive.

However... the food was terribly bland, even for pub food. I had the "California Dreamin'" wrap, which consisted of avacado, sprouts, bacon, blackened chicken, lettuce and a couple of other salad items wrapped in a basic wheat shell. There was literally zero taste to the wrap. In fact, the only thing I could taste was the mayo they used to hold the wrap together.
As a side, I had the seafood chowder (I know, I know). It was super salty and had a weird mixture of being both watery and thick at the same time. If you let it sit for more than a few minutes, the liquid some how managed to separate... Absolutely terrible. I had maybe five spoonfuls and left the rest.

Service: 9/10
Food: 3/10
Atmosphere: 8/10

Hee Rae Dung

Got the black bean noodle (23), sweet and spicy chicken (2), and spicy chicken with vegetables (4)
The chicken was fresh and crispy but did get a bit soggy on in the dish with vegetables. sauce was amazing on the sweet and spicy chicken. black bean noodle was perfectly cooked. much better than what i thought it'd taste like, judging by the picture
paid about $10 bucks each. very cheap and we all came out pretty stuffed.

Ap Gu Jung Korean restaurant on Robson.

Got the Jap Chae Bap, only 9 bucks and the portion of the main dish was pretty big, comes with soup and sides too. Everything tasted great, nice interior with ample seating, great service.

Sanafir

Ordered the..
Scallop Ceviche - Extremely sour. $8
Yellow Curry Mussels - Extremely salty $16

Portions were tiny, food was not good at all, and prices were somewhat high.

Service was terrible.
Waiters and waitresses had no clue which orders belonged to who. They were asking us every single time they came by who ordered what dish. They looked like they were running around like headless chickens, confused and no idea what they were doing. There was almost no attentiveness in the service either.

2/10

If it weren't for my friends bday I don't think I'd ever have gone.

Pho Linh

Spring rolls were great and were made with rice paper instead of wonton wrappers. Their bo 3 mon or 3 course beef was a great value as well.

Phnom Penh - 8/10

First time going here after all the hype about it. I tried the butter beef and the beef fillets with some rice. Overall, 2 very solid dishes presented well; it's very tasty as well!

I may seem like a cheap-ass, but I wish there was free parking. I parked on the side streets :(

ps. spotted dark blue sti sedan with revscene decal yesterday there. :fullofwin:

River Mekong in White Rock 8.5/10

Eaten there several times, great pho broth. It actually converted the wife into a pho lover. Good amount of meat in the pho as well. I find I run out of meat before the noodles at most places, but not here. They also have delicious wings. Worth checking out for some good inexpensive eats.

The Rogue
7/10
expected better;
they have some pretty good items on their menu, but as with all of the more mainstream downtown joints, once you've tried one, you've pretty much tried them all (hasty generalization, I know, but this is exactly what it felt like)

I've felt this way for many years. As always, there are some exceptions but for the most part, I feel that Downtown restaurants have become the same runabout.

Peaceful restaurant 7/10
Went to this restaurant because it was featured on triple D
Food is not bad but nothing out of the ordinary
Restaurant hyped up too much
Waited half an hour for a table of 5
Favorite dish was the noodles in peanut sauce
Would visit again if the wait wasn't too long

Cute place. Macarons were good but wasnt super extra ordinary.
My favs were jasmin and rose. Had them with organic silver needle tea. Mmmmm.
Highly recommend for a date :)

Osamu 8.5/10

Service was decent. The waitress was new but she was very friendly and attentive.
Food was very good overall, except the grilled black cod (texture was excellent, but it was too salty).
Sashimi was fresh and were well cut with decent portions.
Rolls were so-so. We ordered 2 of the 3 special rolls. Had crab meat, mango and cream cheese, and salmon sashimi ontop. My girlfriend and I liked it, but if you're looking for traditional sushi this isn't it.
Salads were good. We had the tuna tataki seaweed salad.
Fresh oysters for $1/ea. Sizing were above average, with lemon and ponzu sauce. Good.
Assorted nigiri had a good variety.
Agedashi tofu was OK. The tempura batter got stuck on my teeth and was annoying, but it tasted alright. For the price, I've had better.

Overall it was a good experience, but pricey. Ordered a few extra things here and there, the bill quickly racked up to $135 for 4.

Same goes when non-Asians rave about other Asian restaurants. My white friends love eating at Hon's.

Koon Bo on Fraser and 41st.

Birthday dinner with my family. Food was okay. Lobster wasn't really a fan of. Duck skin wrap is as usual except more oily then before. Winter Melon soup was delicious. Chicken salad (which they are famous for) was just okay, nothing special.

It was busy, crowded, but the food came out at the right time, servers were attentive, just the food could be better.

Been here a lot in the past, since my mom used to love the restaurant.

Apparently they sold this place not long ago so all the chefs from before are gone. They kept the main people out front so people would recognize it's the same but it's not. So I heard...

Aki Japanese (40+ Years Japanese Restaurant on Thurlow - New location on West Pender).

They are renowned for their grilled miso black cod. Didn't get to try this today instead for lunch I had the Tempura Soba. Presentation was beautiful but the portion is very small. Prices are the same as the old location considering the new location is really jazzed up with the new interior design.

For me however, it's lost it's charm from the Old Aki where it was in the basement store on Thurlow (it had all the wood work, tatami rooms and the chef grilling all the yakitori's and fishes in front of you.

Overall food was decent, portion small, decor was nice but probably would not return in awhile. 3.75/5

Angel's Cafe (Hong Kong Style Food Cafe on Fraser St)
My go to place for HK style food. Decent taste, big portions and reasonable prices.
Hot Plate Set Menu (1 Chicken steak, 1 Fish Cutlet, Fries, Vegetables, Rice, Mushroom Pepper Sauce, Soup, Bread, Dessert) for $12.50. Enough for lunch and some leftovers for home. Solid 5/5
Some daily special black pepper beef tongue fried vermicelli. It was alright but a bit oily. 3.5/5
Cantonese Seafood Style Chowmein. This dish was awesome and is recommended. Again it's a bit oily but it's pretty much impossible to make fried chowmein without it being oily. 4.25/5

Overall very solid 4.25/5

Fritz's European Fry House on Davie.
Was out and about in DT Saturday night and needed a quick fix of something fried and salty.
Had the Jumbo Poutine and DAYAM one of the best poutine in the City of Vancouver imo.

10/5 as it satisfied my poutine craving and their fries are delish!

Not sure what the hype is about for Peaceful.

IMO they only have 2 good dishes out of the entire menu and it's the rolled beef pancake and the beef noodles.

That place is way overplayed just because of Triple D

Any dishes you had that you could recommend.

I went there once 1/2 year back after reading the reviews on Yelp but was disappointed in the place. It could have been that we ordered the wrong thing.
