Fortunately the lower mainland is small enough for people not to be geographically restricted to East Van when deciding where to eat

dlo 06-09-2016 07:15 PM

so where do u eat sushi at?

Galactic_Phantom 06-09-2016 09:04 PM

For nigiris
Now: Maumi
Past: Taka's, Octopus Garden, Hachi. Each gone downhill imo
For rolls I'm less picky since sauce can mask a lot of the taste.

jinxcrusader 06-10-2016 08:24 AM

Lmao @ comparing Taka with Sushi by Yuki. Taka's will have you pay 3x more, easily

Galactic_Phantom 06-10-2016 08:37 AM

Yeah...because I would be ordering a lot more lobster, otoro and wagyu beef, something Yuji's doesn't have. That's like saying Black and Blue is triple the price of Hy's because there is a choice on the menu to order a $200~ wagyu steak instead of regular steak thats roughly $60.

I'm just going by Zomato menu prices so the exact prices may have changed but this should be a better comparison

Hamachi: Takas: $2.5. Yuji's: $2.75
Engawa: Takas: $3.75. Yuji's: $3.25
Unagi: Takas: $2.75. Yuji's: $3.5
Albacore Toro: Takas: $2.75. Yuji's: $2.5
Saba: Takas: $2.25. Yuji's: $1.75

So if we're comparing only stuff that is available at Yuji's, how exactly are you paying 3x more again?

westopher 06-10-2016 09:02 AM

Please, please don't use zomato anymore, for anything.....

swiftshift 06-10-2016 09:37 AM

Neptune on No.3 - GREAT CHICKEN HOTPOT!

kkttsang 06-10-2016 03:38 PM

Actually what do you guys use to find restaurants Yelp?

swiftshift 06-10-2016 04:12 PM

Bao Chau - On Hastings.
Had a meeting near there for work and stopped by for lunch.
$2 spring roll's #ftw'z

dlo 06-10-2016 04:17 PM

yup yelp has an app also, easy to navigate and is usually accurate.

westopher 06-10-2016 04:39 PM

Both are shit.
Trip advisor and open table are both fantastic and more up to date with people who are interested in food.

Armind 06-10-2016 05:13 PM

Any suggestions for a restaurant with nice view/patio for a group of 11?

Boss asked me to pick a place for company dinnner, it is up to me. No limits, but must be patio with a view. :megusta:

westopher 06-10-2016 07:48 PM

Ancora.

Isn't open table only limited to the restaurant that uses their reservation service? Not really useful if I'm just scrolling around and brainstorming dinner plans

westopher 06-10-2016 11:21 PM

It is useful because 90% of restaurants use it. If not use trip advisor. Also scout magazine is a well respected source of food news in the city.

Obsideon 06-10-2016 11:36 PM

I use RS :troll:

Galactic_Phantom 06-10-2016 11:36 PM

If anyone cares, I only mentioned Taka's because jinxcrusader brought it up. I am in no way recommending anyone to go to Taka's anymore. It came up in a conversation with my friend who went recently and it has gone completely downhill beyond imaginable for those have experienced in back in the day. It seems that his disciples (or new owners, whatever the case is) are using Taka's goodwill established through years of hard work to deceive the people who've never been with subpar quality and in doing so, alienating the long time customers and dragging the name through mud.

It's always a shame to see a good restaurant go but this one hits hard since it was always a great experience with Taka-san there.

Went to Nightingales last night. Ordered the Beef heart tartar on toasted bread 7/10. A little too rich for my taste, nonetheless it was still tasty. Grilled Pork belly with nectarines and pistachios 7/10. The pork was tender and pistachios worked well. Spicy Salumi pizza. 8/10 Thin crust, good char and toppings but not a fan of the end crust but the rest worked very well. Ordered the South shore sour drink. 8/10. Good citrus flavour. I would most likely go again. Overall I'd give a 7/10. Good looking restaurant/ambience. A bit too loud for my liking and the plating was pretty boring but I guess one would pay for nice plating at Hawksworth.

Hondaracer 06-11-2016 12:30 PM

Back to Le Croc last night.. another 9.5/10 for me

Started with great wine and champagne

Lobster Bisque
Bone Marrow
Salmon trio (candied, tartare, smoked) the candied salmon was the best i've ever had bar none, and i've aten tones of stuff made by natives, etc. old family recipes, and this was above them all.

Main went with the New Zealand Venison with Duck Confit, in two different sauces

finished with the special Grand Marnier Souffle

imo for the price and the food, it's the best restaurant in Van.

Edit* I'll preface that though by saying I love French food

Have you dined there? Searched this thread but no reviews yet.

Some of the suggestions me and the boss came up with are:

Miku
Bridges
Cardero's

westopher 06-12-2016 12:22 PM

I haven't been to Ancora but a couple people I know who I really respect work there. They wound't be part of it if it wasn't good I don't think.

Took the gf for her first time to The Fish Counter today. She had the Clam chowder, pretty good for it being dairy free 8/10. I ordered the Po'boy and fuck it was amazing! 10/10.

westopher 06-12-2016 04:54 PM

I liked my food at the fish counter, but didn't like the price and lack of seating. Maybe I'll give it another go, although go fish is my go to for fish and chips/fish sammies.

I find the $9 oyster po boy very very reasonable compared to fish prices

:drunk:

I think I am like the fish counter ambassador on this forum , everyone got the po boy and gave it a 10/10 BrokeBack

Except the place was mentioned on RS way before you asked about it in your recent thread.
