if anyone wants a buffet, go to cosmopolitan hotel buffet in las vegas (wicked spoon)

easily the best buffet I had anywhere! even better than the most expensive one I had at caesars (Bacchanal Buffet) $100 CAD lol.

i wouldn't try buffets anywhere near here lol

Went to Green Leaf Cafe in Coquitlam last week. They just opened that week. Same owner/chef as the Green Leaf Sushi over on West Broadway/Kits area I believe. I feel this second location is trying to step away from the sushi/aburi theme.
Avoid the Uni Rice Bowl. So expensive and it was drenched in sesame oil.
The Mentaiko Udon is amazing. Super garlicky, creamy, portion size was decent for the price too. I would definitely go back just for the Mentaiko Udon. Service was good.
The table next to us ordered a souffle risotto. They raved hard on it. I'll have to try it out next time too.

It was busy, crowded, but the food came out at the right time, servers were attentive, just the food could be better.

Been here a lot in the past, since my mom used to love the restaurant.

'tis disappointing.

Go if you have never been, but do not have high expectations.

Do not go if you've been in the past.

Ora Sushi in Steveston. Great little place, 8.5/10, fresh, some special rolls, price is right.

St. Lawrence 7/10

Like many places in Vancouver it was hyped and hyped pretty hard. I even heard someone say it was the hottest restaurant in Canada. Whatever the case I would classify it in the same way I do most good spots in Van and that's that it was good but not amazing. Worth checking out once but I'm not drooling to go back either.

Heritage Asian Eatery - 7/10.

$20 for a salmon bowl...Maybe I don't go out to eat often now and don't know what is considered reasonable for price, but for a bowl of rice with some salad, small slice of salmon and two eggs seems pricey.

Shitty ingredients = cheap
Good ingredients = not cheap
If you can make it at home for that price and do it as well as them, open a restaurant. Felix makes some of the best food this city has to offer.
I mean, it’s $13 to eat at McDonald’s. If that doesn’t put it in perspective I don’t know what can.

big mac meal is still under $10 out the door, and you get it in 2 minutes.
i don't give 2 shits about mcds, but it's not really a fair comparison.

Its a comparison of how much food costs.
You are paying only $7 less for food with zero nutritional value, in a shitty building, made for you by 16 year olds.
Compared to paying that $7 more for, first of all, salmon, which isn't cheap, other real ingredients, in a nice atmosphere, prepared by experienced cooks.
If you don't see the value in that, again, go buy some ingredients and recreate it at home for less money.

It still blows my mind that a million dollar 2 bedroom condo is widely accepted but people still can't comprehend $18 burgers.

Don't get me wrong, if its not good, of course it isn't worth it, whether its $5 or $50, but if it is good, and you think its like $3 too expensive, reevaluate what you know about food prices.

well you can't really recreate mcdonalds at home, no matter how hard you try. it's never going to be the same thing. the effort to even get close is the opposite of getting value for your time and money. you might make something objectively better, but to someone who wants mcds, it has to be just that, or it's entirely something else.

You technically can recreate anything at home. It's if you are willing to put in the time to do it. Restaurants don't get to use secret ingredients.

Regardless, you kind of picked up the exact opposite of my point.

some people just have a number in their head of what food should cost, and no matter how nice the waitress is or whether the place has a cool vibe, they won't want to pay more than that price unless it's a special occasion. no amount of free ranging, brioche buns, or shoestring fries is going to be ok with some people if it's $20, when they can get one for $15 next door with a whole wack of fries on the side at a place that is comparable in their eyes.

Recently went to Vegas and stuffed myself silly

Wing Lei @ Wynn 9/10
Sweet and sour pork that managed to stay light and crunchy the whole meal was something amazing. The three cup sable fish was the perfect amount of flavor and doneness.

Yardbird @ Venetian 7.5/10
Tasted like elevated KFC, good but nothing special.

Momofuku @ the cosmo 8/10
It's much better then the one at toronto, the bao was ok but had far better ones in taiwan. The Salt and Pepper lobster with condense milk was an interesting combo but finishes off a little too salty.

Once @ the venetian 7/10
The Oxtail bibibamp was very good, either else was forgettable

Nuba last night, the Hastings location.

I’ve aten here quite a bit and almost always with big groups. I hate their share policy thing of groups of 9+ they essentially fill you up on hummus and pickled veggies and then give you the little portion of protein along with a bunch of other stuff I don’t want.

For anyone who hasn’t gone there, the food is good but I’d say stay away from going with a big group and being forced into the share menu. All I want is some Flaffel and some prawns/lamb don’t need a pile of other shit that gets you feeling gross cause it’s just a ball of mush in your stomach.

Marutama Central Library location 5/10

This was hyped up to me, as the best ramen in Vancouver. It was very mediocre. The broth was very bland.. but at least clean?

Perhaps it was cause they were very busy during office lunch hour or this location sucks.

That is about right. It's a super rich broth heavy on katsuobushi (smoked bonito). I had it at both fyu-unji and Rokurinsha in Tokyo. Gojiro wasn't far off in flavor profile when I had it there.

It can be super intense and heavy. Not something I can have on the regular.

Aleph eatery in East Van, essentially a Nuba style middle eastern spot

Their “Silk road” a combo of hummus, babaganush, honey, oils, and a few other things may be the best dish I’ve had this year. a fanatasic meal all around. The Halloumi grilled cheese was so delicious
