I went to New York for one week at the end of May.

Flight:
Cathay Pacific was the cheapest flight I found from Vancouver to NY. It was a really nice flight with decent airplane food, free alcohol selection, and individual inflight movies/TV.

Hotel:
After arriving, I stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn (Chelsea area). It was a really good deal because it was on the south edge of Times Square. It had a Red subway line station right on the corner of the block. Recently renovated, everything in the room was new and clean, including a large LCD with HDTV programming, fridge, and microwave. I am told that their rooms are very large by Manhattan standards (its the only NY hotel I've stayed in). No safe in the room, but they have free safety deposit boxes at the front desk. Being a business hotel, they also have a room in the lobby with two computers that you can use for internet access, as well as free wifi in the whole hotel. The only downside was that the street was deserted at night (all shops closed in the area) so it was a little dangerous returning to the hotel past 11PM by walking/subway.

Deals/places to go:
Buy a 14 day unlimited Metrocard. It will pay for itself by taking the subway twice a day, and almost everywhere you will want to go can be accessed by transit.

If you're into baseball, see both a Mets and Yankees game. Both teams are playing their final season in their home stadiums (Shea and Yankee stadiums both set to close next year).

Best steak in NY is Peter Luger's in Brooklyn. It's a little far from Manhattan, and there's not much else to do in the area (also dangerous at night), but fantastic thick cut bacon, onion rings, and porterhouse steaks.

Try getting tickets to David Letterman/Conan O'Brien. The shows are free, and can be a lot of fun. I had a blast watching Conan (got to shake his hand), and I also got 1-2 seconds of TV time on Letterman. Key to getting front row seats is showing up crazy excited and enthousiastic in front of the employees.

See at least one show on Broadway. Chicago is excellent. TKTS is your hook up for cheap tickets.

I think I'll leave it at that for now, if you have anything else specific to ask, please do. Here are some pics.

Hilton Garden Inn (Chelsea area)

White Castle

Magnolia Cupcakes (in several movies/tv shows)

Lombardi's Pizza (First Pizzeria in North America)

Hot Pastrami at Carnagie Deli

Cheesecake at Carnagie Deli

Small 1 Person Steak and Onion Rings at Peter Luger's (2 person porterhouse is HUGE)

Forbidden Cake Sundae and Frozen Hot Chocolate at Serendipity 3 (as seen in the movie Serendipity)

Drinks at Pegu Club (one of the most prestigious and talked about cocktail bar in the US)

To supplement jlo meins post:

Broadwaybox.com is way better thank TKTS. Better selection, get tickets days in advance rather than the day of a show, and avoid the lineups.

I'd go to Brasserie Les Halles (of Anthony Bourdain fame) over Peter Luger. Great french onion soup, and steak frites. And it's in Manhattan so it's convenient.

If you're into shopping go to the Woodbury outlets, most of the well known designers have outlets there (ie. D&G, Hugo, Chanel, Gucci, etc). http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=7

What are you interested in doing while in NYC? Then it's easier to give advice and avoid the typical suggestions.

Do not forget to try Broadway. It is a must.

and now i am too lazy to put my input where are the good deals to eat and shop. ill try to update u laters

That can be a great idea, but I think for someone's first time in NY, there is already too much to do in 2 weeks even without leaving Manhattan.

there are cheap buses that run from chinatown to DC - if you're interested in checking it out - you know, see the white house, capital building, etc. i don't know if it can be a day trip tho - you'd have to check. might be worth it if you're there for 2 weeks.

tons of art to see - MOMA, The Met, etc... and if you're going to DC - the smithsonians is awesome (not only because it's free, but it has the air and space museum which is good if you're not too into art).

take time and explore the different neighbourhoods, there's tons to see. good food in a lot of places - not just the pricey restaurants.

man.... when i was there - i wanted to catch either a devils game (I was staying in Fort Lee) or rangers (super expensive) game... but both teams were away at the time. but it's gross, i was chatting with people from Dallas - and their games are dirt cheap like $30 as well...

if you want to go to the shows - just click their websites, it has everything you need. usually - you send them a request, but there's never a guarantee on anything.

i've found, that in general - things are cheaper, shoes are MUCH cheaper... there is no sales tax in NYC for clothing purchases under $110 (or something like that....), so that makes a huge difference.

Go in to NJ if you want to buy clothes. No sales tax on clothes if I remember correctly last time I was out there.

no tax on clothing/shoes.

tax on accessories though (belt, hats)

There is also a bigger / newer/ cleaner/ more organized Century 21 on Rt 17 in NJ too, just off Paramus mall.

(about 10 minute drive west into NJ, 10 minutes west of Fort Lee.

But dont plan any shopping in NJ (Bergen county) on sunday, because ALL SHOPPING stores are closed on sunday, even best buys, circuit city. Just some grocery still open.

Its county law..

GO TO HILL COUNTRY TO EAT. Also go to Crif Dogs and get the chihuahua dog. It is teh badass.

The Monty python broadway is pretty hilarious. Walk around Wall street if you into that thing. Others have mentioned the museums already.

But really, GO TO HILL COUNTRY TO EAT and get the fatty beef brisket. you'll thank me later.

WTF man...I've never heard of this place before, checked out their website menu, now I'm pissed I didn't go there on my NY trip lol.

For shopping in NY there is no tax on clothing items priced less than $100 each. Accessories are still taxed.

that is only per item per transaction. Just tideous if you are buying 3 shirts and 1 pants at $50 each and you'd have to do 4 separate transaction to get tax-free on them.

You missed out. Their beef brisket is only about 1000000000 times better than memphis blues.

The Letterman taping I went to didn't suck, but was definitely less fun than Conan. At Letterman, there are so many expectations put onto the audience, especially if the staff select you to sit near the front (I got front row). You're strictly told to laugh at all of Dave's jokes no matter how bad they are, and if you don't look like you're having fun or shout randomly you can be escorted out.

Conan's hilarious because no one cares if you boo or shout out of turn since he loves spontaneous crowd reactions.
